Planet Zoo Africa is just a continuation of our love for the Planet Zoo franchise. And I held that love especially dear to my heart. First and foremost because I love animals in general. And secondly, because I love the Planet Zoo franchise.
However, it’s that very same game series that inspired this article again. And the sale that I came along with it. Indeed. Our Planet Zoo Franchise Sale is currently on, and we at IndieGala are excited about it. In fact, so much so that we’re devoting another article about it.
But that’s not to say that our previous articles weren’t a pure joy to write. No, in fact, I got to write about some zoo movies. You can go back to them here of course. But right here in this particular article, I’ll focus on a different game from the franchise. And on a different aspect of it. Yeah. The article will take me to a different continent as well. Well, the main theme of the article is of course… Africa. All of our 5 movie picks are either partially set or they’re totally set in Africa. Some of them are a bit older, but there’s a distinct difference in the genres. We have some comedies, adventure movies and even biopics on this list. Which movies made the cut? Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Or Ace Ventura 2: When Nature Calls. Yes, it’s the sequel to the iconic comedy movie. And I’m starting with it because I’d like to start on a lighter note. But over here our favorite pet detective Ace Venture has been summoned in Africa to retrieve a very special bat. A very distinct and very important bat for the tribesmen, and he’ll do anything in his power to find it. In true Ace Venture fashion, he’ll be hilarious all the way to the end. But that’s what you expect when you’re watching an Ace Ventura movie. I love the sequel, although it’s not that well-received among the critics even today. And aside from Jim Carrey in the titular role Ian McNeice does a fantastic job in the background too. The movie is set in Africa, and it’s hilarious. It belongs on this list.
Fun fact: According to Simon Callow, Jim Carrey didn’t really want to make the film, which made on-set experiences awkward.
Gorillas In The Mist
A biopic from the ’80s. But a damn good one. That’s Gorillas in the Mist in a nutshell. Also, it has Sigourney Weaver in the role of Dian Fossey. The acclaimed naturalist and the movie depict her work in Rwanda with mountain gorillas. And of course her brutal murder in Rwanda in 1985. Gorillas In The Mist is about one woman’s passion to protect and preserve the animals. She fought against poaching and tourism in wildlife habitats. And she composed one-third of The Trimates. A group of female scientists, along with Jane Goodall and Birutė Galdikas. This is a fantastic movie with one of the best performances from Sigourney Weaver. It’s a must-watch.
Fun fact: Sembagare (John Omirah Miluwi) is based on Rosamund Carr’s former house boy Sembagare Munyamboneza. He set up the Imbabazi orphanage with her in 1994 after the Rwandan Genocide.
Out Of Africa
Another biopic set in Africa. And another that’s from the mid to late ’80s. But this time set in a different era of the 20th century. But yeah. Out of Africa has Meryl Streep in the lead role. That off Karen Blixen. A Danish author who wrote about her experiences in Africa, at the start of the 20th century. Robert Redford is her partner on the silver screen and Sydney Pollack is behind the camera. This is one of my favorite Meryl Streep movies. And favorite Robert Redford movies as well. But I can safely say it’s also one of my favorite movies period. It’s beautiful, it’s grandiose and epic. It has beautiful locations and two of the most talented actors on the planet. It’s a must-watch for every fan of Meryl and Robert.
Fun fact: The town of Karen, just outside Nairobi, is named after Karen Blixen.
The African Queen
This is probably the oldest movie on this list, but also one of the finest. Not to mention it has 2 Hollywood legends in the cast. Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. Set during WWI, it’s about a gin-swilling riverboat captain (played by Bogart). He’s persuaded by a strait-laced missionary (Hepburn) to his boat to attack an enemy warship. And of course, things will not go down so smoothly. The African Queen is a true adventure movie. It’s filled with great locations, and it’s shot beautifully. You can clearly see John Huston’s talents here. It’s a great recommendation.
Fun fact: Humphrey Bogart won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in this movie, making him the last man born in the 19th century to ever win a leading role Oscar.
White Hunter, Black Heart
Last but certainly not least. And in my humble opinion, a movie that’s one of Clint Eastwood’s most underrated. White Hunter, Black Heart is inspired by The African Queen and that’s what makes it so special. Indeed. The film is a thinly disguised account of James Viertel’s experiences while working on the classic 1951 film The African Queen. He’s one of the screenwriters of White Hunter, Black Heart. But Eastwood, as the John Huston-like character of John Wilson, can be heard drawing out his vowels. He’s of course speaking in Huston’s distinctive style. Unlike the modern movies of today, this too was shot on location in Africa and it’s fabulous.
Fun fact: Clint Eastwood agreed to do “The Rookie (1990)” in exchange for “Warner Brothers” letting him make his personal movie project, “White Hunter Black Heart (1990).”
