A Look Back At The Original

Well, what better way to introduce the new game of the series, than to have a closer look at the first one? The game that started it all? It’s been almost 12 years since the first game was released, but we feel that it needs a re-introduction. Because why not?

Dragon’s Dogma was a fantastic action role-playing hack-and-slash video game by Capcom. One might call it the love child of Dark Souls, Monster Hunter, and Skyrim. But that assessment (although a bit strange) is not totally wacky. It does make sense to the fans who have played it. But yeah. it was first released on Xbox 360 and PS3 in May 2012, with the Dark Arisen expansion released the following year.

But what actually makes it so special? Well, the visual spectacle is impressive, as the art design seamlessly blends medieval fantasy with dark undertones. It creates a world that feels both enchanting and mysterious at the same time. Furthermore, the diverse landscapes, from lush forests to desolate dungeons, showcase the developers’ attention to detail.

Style And Substance In Dragon’s Dogma

Yes. It’s not just the style that’s impressive in the original game. The narrative is a tale of epic proportions, rich in lore and intrigue. For instance, the lore extends beyond the main plot. It encourages more exploration and discovery of the setting’s deep history and mythical creatures. The game also excels in character development offering a wide array of classes and skills. Yes, Dragon’s Dogma is filled to the brim with quests, both major story quests and side quests, with a plethora of content in between.

But it is an undeniable fact that Hideaki Itsuno created Dragon’s Dogma back in 2000. Even before he was brought on board the staff of Devil May Cry 2. You’ll have to remember that At the time of the pitch, social mobile games with features similar to the Pawn system had yet to take off in Japan. This was even before the popularity of hardcore action RPGs such as Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls. Itsuno had a difficult task but he did it. The result? As of September 2023, Dragon’s Dogma (including Dark Arisen) had sold 7.9 million units.

There’s A Series Too!

Yup. Dragon’s Dogma is an original net animation (ONA) anime dark fantasy series based on the 2012 video game of the same name. And you’ve guessed it. It’s great. The series consists of 7 episodes in total and it still holds over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes. Not too shabby right?

But all in all, the game is a testament to the brilliance of action RPGs.

So, that begs the question…
