I’ve written about plenty of cops and criminals before. Good or bad characters it doesn’t matter. But The Big Con is one of my latest games that covers the other side of things. The bad side. It deals with criminals and it’s awesome. The thieves, crooks and con artists. The unsavory characters of our reality, and they do turn out to be great inspiration for my articles. And sometimes we find them outside of our reality. In movies, TV shows and much like our latest game suggests… In video games as well. I’ll get to the movie portion of this article a bit later. For now, I’m interested in the game itself. It’s a fairly new. So naturally IndieGala is proud to present… The Big Con.
What’s The Big Con All About You Might Ask?
Developed by Mighty Yell and published by Skybound Game Studios Inc., The Big Con is one of IndieGala’s latest offering. And in it, you get to swindle strangers, pickpocket people, and con commoners across a wacky America of the ‘90s. It should go without saying… But you should lie to your mom about all of it. So, choose who deserves to be conned and who might need a helping hand. The world is your oyster (and hey, pearls are worth a lot!).
So, enjoy yourself. Con people your way! Wear disguises, sneak around, eavesdrop on conversations, and learn how to approach each mark. And hey. Maybe you think you can make enough cheddar just by pick-pocketing. Or seek out more complex gifts that involve breaking and entering smooth-talking, and more. Finally, It’s up to you to outsmart everyone. And lock-pick everything that stands between you and saving your mom’s video store.

And Which Movies Go Well With The Big Con?
Well, we’ve selected a nice list of amazing movies. Some of them are a bit older and some of them a fairly new and fresh. But there’s no denying that all of them are great. And yes, all of them have con artists, and crooks in them. However, we’d love to know your picks as well. Share some of your favorite movies that have con artists characters. OK, let’s begin.
Catch Me if You Can
Why not start with a Steven Spielberg movie? And one of his finest to date I might add. Leonardo DiCaprio is in the lead role here and yes. It’s a movie based on real-life events. Leo plays Frank Abagnale a highly successful con artist, while Tom Hanks plays the FBI agent that’s chasing him in a game of cat and mouse. But Leo and Tom are not the only fantastic actors here. Christopher Walken is outstanding as well. And so is Amy Adams in a small, but memorable role. But yeah. Spielberg really delivered with this movie. Showed us how conning is done from an early age, and this movie is the one you can’t miss.
Fun fact: The real-life Frank Abagnale, Jr. plays a French officer that arrests Frank on Christmas Eve, 1969.
Kajillionaire
Kajillionaire is a 2020 movie that you’ve probably never even heard of. But don’t confuse the novelty of the movie (or the indie status) with lack of quality. This is a very good movie with a fantastic group of actors. Evan Rachel Wood is in the lead here. She plays Old Dolio Dyne. A young woman who lives with her manipulative con artist’s parents. Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins play her parents and this is a very good movie that somehow flew under the radar. It explores themes like deception, manipulation and grooming a child to become a con artist. But yeah, you should definitely watch it.
Fun fact: According to director Miranda July, the choreographed shot at the gas station took about 17 takes.
Dirty Rotten Scoundrels
A classic from the late ’80s and one of Frank Oz’s finest movies. It has 2 legends in the leads and it’s one of my favorite movies ever. Sorry, Anne Hathaway and Rebel Willson. Your version is not good. However, I do like the original 1964 version with Marlon Brando as well. But Dirty Rotten Scoundrels is what I’m here for. Michael Caine and Steve Martin play the Dirty Rotten Scoundrels here. Caine is Lawrence Jamieson. A more sophisticated con artist, while Steve Martin is Freddy Benson. His American rival who competes with Jamieson in order to scam an heiress. Yes, this is an incredibly funny movie with fantastic performances. A must-watch.
Fun fact: This movie is ranked at the number eighty-five spot on Bravo’s “100 Funniest Movies” list.
The Sting
Probably one of my favorite Robert Redford movies. Or at the very least in the top 5. A great caper film with one of Hollywood’s iconic on-screen duo. Robert Redford and Paul Newman. The two legends play professional grifters that are trying to scam a mob boss, and their efforts are glorious. Seriously this is one hell of a movie. Great acting, directing and a fantastic script makes The Sting, iconic to this very day. The movie also marks the only Oscar nomination for Redford (in the acting category) but yeah. You should watch it even if you’re not a fan of him.
Fun fact: Robert Redford didn’t see the movie until June 2004.
Six Degrees of Separation
Another classic, but this time from the ’90s. Indeed, another movie inspired by true events. And a movie with fantastic performances in it. This is a movie inspired by the real-life story of David Hampton. A con man and robber who convinced a number of people in the 1980s that he was the son of actor Sidney Poitier. Will Smith plays David Hampton, while Stockard Channing and Donald Sutherland play Ouisa and Flan Kittredge. A wealthy couple from Firth Avenue turned targets of his scemes. Yes, this is a fabulous movie with fantastic acting. Especially from Channing who got an Oscar nomination for her role. It’s a great movie and deserves another shot.
Fun fact: Paul (Will Smith) passes himself off as Sidney Poitier’s son. In real life, when Smith met Poitier for the first time, the veteran actor said, “well, you’re almost handsome enough to be my son.”
