Mad Max Movies: The origins

First of all, George Miller isn’t a trained director. Like, at all. In fact, he was working as a resident doctor in Sydney’s ER department, when he first got the idea of such movie. But, after seeing so many of his friends die from accidents, and dealing with the 1973 oil crisis in Australia, he decided to pursue his passion. Film-making.

Likewise, his friend James McCausland was a first-time screenwriter. And finally, after producing the short film Violence in the Cinema, Part 1, the duo ultimately produced Mad Max. Seems like their rookie status prevented them from getting big findings, but they eventually made it. The rest is history.

So… Which are the BEST Mad Max Movies?

As we mentioned earlier, there are currently 4 Mad Max Movies. Three of them have Mel Gibson in the titular role, while one of them has Tom Hardy in the role of Max Rockatansky. This is our opinion and ranking of the movies, but we can’t wait to know yours. Which Mad Max movie would you put on the number one spot. Let us know in the comment section. We’d love to know.

Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome

In all honesty, this is probably is the weakest Mad Max movie of all. In contrast to the previous installments, Beyond Thunderdome was not taken seriously by the critics and the audience. Certainly, the budget was more generous (compared to the predecessors), but failed to make an impression.  Likewise, Tina Turner’s performance was debated and mocked mercilessly, and as a result, the overall quality suffered.

Max Max

As a result of the rookie status of the crew, Mad Max was shot with an extremely small budget of around 400.000 dollars. And although the Max Max movie received polarizing reviews after the initial release, it’s considered a cult classic today. Additionally, Max Max transformed Mel Gibson into an international super-star.

Moreover, some of the Australian slang had to be transformed into an American, but the result was immensely positive. Another testament to the quality of Mad Max is that even today Mad Max holds 92% approval on Rotten Tomatoes.

Mad Max: Fury Road

The latest of the Mad Max Movies, indeed. But is it the best? Firstly, it’s debatable. Not for me, at least but it did give us a solid Mad Max in Tom Hardy. However, was Max the star here or was it Imperator Furiosa? Moreover, an interesting fact in Fury Road is the presence of Hugh Keays-Byrne. He played Toecutter in the original Mad Max movie, and then played Immortal Joe. Hence, the slight confusion, among some of the audiences. Fury Road received 10 Oscar nominations and won 6. Not bad right?

The Road Warrior

Ultimately, the debate is between Fury Road and The Road Warrior. Two fantastic movies, indeed.

However, George Miller turned down the offer to direct First Blood to direct The Road Warrior. Probably the best Mad Max movie in the entire franchise, The Warrior holds 95% approval on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics praised not just Mel Gibson’s performance. But the visuals, direction, costumes, and the overall atmosphere.
