Ghost Trick

All right ladies and gentlemen. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective is next on our agenda and for good reason. It’s a brand-new game for us. And it has a female character in the center of the premise.

How brand-new you might ask? Well, it’s currently on pre-order here at IndieGala and it’s due to be released on June 30th. You can get it with a pre-order here. Hurry up now. June 30th is getting closer.

But the second reason why we’re excited about it is because it has a female character in the middle of the story. Now, we’ve had plenty of great games with female characters in them. Solar Ash first comes to mind. You can get it here. Next, there’s the fantastic Syberia game (which is available here) and of course Loretta. Available for purchase here as well. It’s currently with a 30% discount. Don’t miss out on it.

Ghost Trick

If you recall we did a fantastic article about both Syberia and Loretta. My Filmaholic Gaming Experience was devoted to Syberia (the article is available here). But our very recognizable movie listing article was devoted to Loretta (article available here).

Oh and if you’re looking for a great movie with a female detective then look no further than Enola Holmes. We did an entire article about Enola as well, and you can check it out here. It’s a cool review of the first Enola Holmes movie.

But we’re here about Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.

Ghost Trick And Fantastic Female Detectives

Well, there’s a caveat to this portion of the article. None of these ladies mentioned in the article are deceased as Sissel. The main protagonist in Ghost Trick. None of them are dead, but they’re all fierce, smart and amazing. Some of them come from the movies, while others come from TV. Here are some of our finest picks. We hope you’ll like them.

Veronica Mars

She starts off as a teen detective but progresses into a fine professional one. But at its core, Veronica Mars was a teen noir mystery that captivated the teenage years of so many. Myself included. Set in the fictional Neptune, California the TV series revolved around Veronica Mars’s moonlighting in solving crime. It’s an after-school activity to help her private investigator father, which quickly progresses to a full blow career. Kristen Bell portrayed Veronica throughout the whole 4 seasons of the TV show. And in the movie which was made thanks to a Kickstarter campaign set up by the likes of Rob Thomas, the cast and the crew. If you’re a fan of Kristen Bell, then you’re sure not to miss out on Veronica Mars.

Fun fact: During the Kickstarter campaign, the entire amount of the budget was raised and surpassed in under eleven hours.

Cagney And Lacey

We’re going to count Cagney & Lacey as one here. They’re both fabulous detectives and it’s kinda hard to separate which one is more amazing than the other. Also, these two fabulous ladies are part of the oldest TV show on this list. Yes, Cagney & Lacey was a staple in the ’80s and coincidentally inspired thousands of women to join the police force. Something that Angie Dickinson’s Police Woman did back in the ’70s. Set in a fictionalized version of Manhattan’s 14th Precinct, the TV show centers around the titular two characters. Mary Beth Lacey (Tune Daly) and Christine Cagney (Sharon Gless). Two female police detectives who must cooperate in their professional lives. And in their personal. Cagney And Lacey is a fantastic show, and it paved the way for police procedural shows. It’s a must-watch.

Fun fact: Loretta Swit demanded that Tyne Daly play the role of Lacey.

Stella Gibson

Detective Superintendent (DSU) Stella Gibson that is. Gillian Anderson stars in The Fall’s leading role. A crime drama TV show that’s set in Northern Ireland. Stella is a seemingly cold but at the same time very passionate detective who starts her tenure in Belfast with a hunt for a serial killer. Yes, The Fall is a fantastic psychological thriller that examines the lives of two hunters. One is a serial killer who stalks his victims in and around Belfast. The other is a talented Detective Superintendent from the MET with an assigment to catch him. It’s a game of cat and mouse and it’s good. And not only because it has Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan in the cast. It’s got 3 seasons in total and every one of those three seasons is worth your time.

Fun fact: Gillian Anderson declared that Stella Gibson is her favorite among all of the characters she has performed, even more than Scully from The X-Files (1993).

Marge Gunderson

Ah, Marge. Fargo’s heroine du jour. But seriously, all joking aside Marge Gunderson is one of the most iconic detectives. And one that got France McDormand her first out of three Oscars. A truly inspirational female character that amazes us with bravery and smarts. In contrast to most cops, Marge is a very nice woman who is not very hostile at all.  And she did all of her detective work while six months pregnant. But hey. She did solve the three murders and proved her strong leadership to everyone. Especially to herself. In all seriousness, Fargo is a must-watch movie. Especially if you wanna call yourself a Coen Brothers fan. Or a Frances McDormand fan, in my case.

Fun fact: Frances McDormand wore a “pregnancy pillow” filled with birdseed to simulate her pregnant belly.
