Get To Know The Basics Of City of Gangsters
Developed by SomaSim and published by Kalypso Media Digital Ltd (Kasedo Games), City of Gangsters is a great simulation/strategy game.
The year is 1920, the start of Prohibition in the USA. With congressional action, a huge segment of the national economy becomes illegal overnight. Bars and saloons are to close. Next distilleries and breweries go quiet. Also, distributors are shut down. But a new era is dawning. A gilded age for smugglers, black markets, illegal manufacture, and organized crime is next.
This is where you come in.
First, start a crime syndicate from nothing, and grow it into a well-oiled money machine. Then build speakeasies and illegal distilleries. Manage production chains and resource distribution. Smuggle goods from out of town and bribe the police to look the other way. And finally, grow a powerful crew and keep your rivals under your thumb. Eliminate competition and rule the city. But most importantly, keep the money flowing.

City of Gangsters Led Me To 5 Iconic Gangster Movies
As I previously mentioned, I briefly touched on the subject of gangsters in the Prohibition era before. But I also wrote about the portrayal and depiction of the Prohibition era in Hollywood. Starting with the roaring 20’s all the way to the ’90s and the early 2000s. You can read that particular article here. But for this one, I did select a mix of biopics and fictional stories. All of them are set in the Prohibition era and they’re all great. They all fit in the narrative of the game itself. But we’d love to know your picks as well. Feel free to share some of your favorite gangster movies set in the Prohibition era. We’d love to know more about them.
Ok let’s begin, shall we?
The Untouchables
A true gangster classic from the ’80s. Directed by Brian de Palma and written by David Mamet, The Untouchables is a movie about Elliot Ness (played by Kevin Kostner) and his team of Untouchables. A team of special agents from the Bureau of Prohibition had a job to take down Al Capone and his cronies. And of course to bring him to justice. During the ’30s the notorious kingpin Al Capone supplied illegal liquor and has nearly full control of Chicago. The Untouchables had a difficult task for sure, but this movie is even more fabulous because of the great acting. From Kostner, Robert DeNiro and especially from the late Sir Sean Connery. He won the Oscar for Best Supporting actor after all.
Fun fact: Albert H. Wolff, the last survivor of the real-life Untouchables, was a consultant on this movie. And helped Kevin Costner with his portrayal of Eliot Ness.
Lawless
A movie that’s written by Nick Cave. Yes, that Nick Cave. And another gangster flick from the Prohibition era with a stellar cast in it. But it’s also a movie about a trio of bootlegging brothers. They are threatened by a new special deputy and other authorities angling for a cut of their profits. So they must fight off the looming danger and survive. Or they’ll get eaten by the corrupt the ruthless Deputy Charley Rakes and his men. Oh and much like the Untouchables, this is also a movie inspired by true events. as explained in the 2008 book “The Wettest County in the World” written by Matt Bondurant. He’s the grandson of Jack Bondurant (Shia LaBeouf’s character in the film).
Fun fact: This film has one Academy Award winner – Gary Oldman. And two Academy Award nominees-Tom Hardy and Jessica Chastain.
Public Enemies
A movie by Michael Man, and another gangster flick inspired by true events. Indeed. It’s an adaptation of Bryan Burrough’s non-fiction book Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI. And it’s exactly about that. The final years of the notorious bank robber John Dillinger (Johnny Depp). As he is pursued by FBI agent Melvin Purvis (Christian Bale) of course. And the early days of the FBI’s fight against organized crime in the USA. Johnny Depp, Christian Bale, Marion Cotillard and Stephen Dorff are in the lead roles here and this is another movie you can’t miss.
Fun fact: John Dillinger was actually left-handed. The gun held by Johnny Depp is backward.
Once Upon A Time In America
A true masterpiece from Sergio Leone, don’t you think? And his last movie of course, but by many accounts the best in his career. Not to mention the second movie on this list to have De Niro in the role of a gangster. But the movie chronicles the lives of best friends David “Noodles” Aaronson and Maximilian “Max” Bercovicz. Two childhood friends. As they lead a group of Jewish ghetto youths to prominence as Jewish gangsters in New York City’s world of organized crime. Also, the film explores themes of childhood friendships, love, lust, greed, betrayal, loss, broken relationships. And the rise of mobsters in American society during the ’30s. This is brutal, but a wonderful film with a great cast. And yes, deserves to be on this list.
Fun fact: The film takes place in 1920, 1932, 1933, and 1968.
Cotton Club
A movie that got released in the same year as Once Upon A Time In America. But sadly didn’t get the recognition it deserves. But yeah. It has a fantastic director behind it (Francis Ford Coppola) and a fabulous cast as well. The story centers on the Cotton Club a Harlem jazz club in the 1930s and the people that occupied it. Yes, the real Cotton Club in New York. From the famous musicians to the unsavory underworld people of the era. It’s a fantastic movie and It’s a must-watch for every fan of the legend. Not to mention the cast of Richard Gere, Diane Lane, Bob Hoskins, Gregory Hines, James Remar, Nicolas Cage adds another layer of quality there.
Fun fact: Richard Gere really is an accomplished trumpet player and performed his own solos in this movie.
