The Game Awards 2020 ceremony is coming up. Gamers from all over the world try to find out which will be the GOTY, the most beautiful game that will have the favor of critics and audience.
But what games are nominated for this award? Here’s everything you need to know about it.
The Game Awards 2020: the titles nominated at GOTY
2020 was not an exciting year for the videogame world. The pandemic has stopped the development of numerous titles and caused several damages to workers. However, some games have conquered the public. Hey, in 2020 also came out the new Indiegala game: Exit Limbo!
See? Maybe it wasn’t an exciting year, but if you look in the right way you can find some pearls. So here are the games chosen for the Game Of The Year award.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the Nintendo standard-bearer
Animal Crossing is a magnificent saga. If you want to immerse yourself in a colorful world, full of things to do and cheerful, you can bet on this videogame. Yeah, it’s a great way to escape reality. But New Horizons deserves the title of Game of The Year? Honestly, I don’t think so.
I want to explain better, GOTY must be a revolutionary title, able to entertain for several hours and never tire. Animal Crossing: New Horizons can do this, but in the long run, it’s always the same. If you’ve played at least one franchise title, you’ll know more or less what the mechanics are and the things you’ll have to do. In a nutshell: it is already seen, nothing too special.
Doom Eternal, the return of the old-fashioned FPS
From my point of view, Doom Eternal is one of the top candidates to win this award. Why? Well, because it has all the cards to do so. Its gameplay fits perfectly with the needs of any type of gamer. If you are an FPS lover, you can adore it from the first to the last minute but even if you are a casual gamer you will have fun with this title.
Direct, frantic, with a thrilling soundtrack: Doom Eternal will give you the adrenaline rush you are looking for from a wild and crazy FPS. Believe me, you can only understand what I’m talking about if you try the game and hey, it’s just available on our store now, so why not take advantage of it?
Final Fantasy VII Remake: originality rewarded?
As you may have guessed from the sarcastic title, I hope it doesn’t win this award. Wait, I have nothing against Final Fantasy VII, I love this title and I consider it one of the cornerstones of the history of videogames.
Plus, I must admit that the remake of the game manages to involve you in a fantasy world and is a great way to bring a new generation of gamers to this historical saga. What I think is: come on, we’re talking about the GOTY of The Games Awards 2020, we’re not in 1997! I think it’s right to reward originality; there are new software houses that have launched an innovative IP and don’t use fanservice to sell.
For this reason, congratulations to Final Fantasy VII Remake, you joined the nominees of GOTY 2020 but do not win, thank you!
Ghost of Tsushima: another possible winner of The Game Awards 2020
Ghost of Tsushima is the typical game that wins the GOTY during these ceremonies. It has exciting gameplay, a poetic story, and a memorable artistic direction: what more do you want? Of course, if I have to find a flaw, it seems a bit too similar to Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Attention, they are different games, but the Japanese folklore, the setting, and the music reminded me of the game made by From Software.
Well, Sekiro also won the GOTY award last year, so is this another clue that we already have a winner? It could be, in any case, it is always good not to take anything for granted during such ceremonies!
Hades, the surprise of the year?
Hades is perhaps a game that not everyone knows, yet it is one of the most beautiful surprises of the year. It is a rogue-lite where you will play as Zagreus, son of the god Hades. You must escape the Underworld and reach Mount Olympus, taking your rightful place among the other gods.
Taking advantage of the particular isometric view, you’ll have to make your way through different biomes, defeat enemies, and gain allies. Do you think it’s easy? Well, every game over you’ll have to win back the bonuses you’ve earned: trust me, it’ll be a real challenge! Of course, if this title won the prize it would be a surprise, but it would be nice to see a game like that triumph as GOTY, a sort of revenge for all those who love the genre.
The Last Of Us II: what more should we say?
If on Ghost of Tsushima I could have some doubts, here I am 100% sure: The Last Of Us II is the main candidate to win at The Game Awards 2020. Okay, I understand that you may not like the story. Moreover, I found it too politically correct, a small disappointment for those who expected raw themes as happened in the first episode of the series.
Regardless, from the point of view of gameplay, I think I’ve never played anything like it on consoles. There are fluid movements, numerous actions to be carried out, choice of game strategies. In short, everything you could do in the first game, proposed to the maximum, the peak that you could reach for this generation of consoles. If you see Neil Druckmann on the stage of The Games Awards 2020 celebrating with his award, don’t worry, everything is normal.
