Is The Bee Movie Actually Good?

Well, if you’re a child maybe. But even children will be left with more questions than laughs, to be quite honest. But I did my best to watch Bee Movie yet again this month. I remember watching it when the movie came out in 2007, and I wanted a fresh clean slate. A new perspective on my opinion since I barely remember watching it in the first place. How did it hold up all these years? And does it have a saving grace quality after the second viewing?

Kinda. It’s a decent animated movie overall but it’s not without flaws that’s for sure. Let’s take a closer look at them. Shall we? But first I feel the need to explain what Bee Movie is all about. Well, it’s about Barry B. Benson (Jerry Seinfeld). A rebellious and idealistic bee who’s about to enter the workforce. However, he’s not satisfied with the limited options and when he’ll get out of the hive, he’ll also experience a whole new world. A world of new challenges and discoveries. He’ll meet new friends and challenge humanity to look at the bees differently.

The Good And The Bad In The Bee Movie Review

Let’s start with the good. For the most part, the animation is great. I say for the most part because it gets a bit wonky near the end of the movie. You can especially notice the drop in vision and quality in the airplane sequence. But I do have bones to pick with plenty of other areas.

For instance, the script and the humor that occupies the script. But let’s start with the humor. It has Jerry Seinfeld style written all over it. Every joke is reminiscent of the comedian, which is fair. But the Seinfeld-like delivery doesn’t help much in the separation of the character and the man behind the character. He’s no different than any other project that you might have seen him in. The humor is mostly verbal and delivered through jokes, but much like with the script… It’s all over the place.

Oh boy. After I watched it again, I actually remembered what bugged me the most about Bee Movie. The script. It doesn’t know what it wants to be. Furthermore, it starts off innocently but after about 30 minutes or so it gets lost in different genres, tones and messages to the public. It transitions into a courtroom movie, and with that, it becomes a vehicle to bring out other actors to the table. Some of them are great, while others are not so much.

Great Voice Work Though…

If there’s one place I can’t really put down and bash it’s the supporting cast. Well, expect from Jerry Seinfield who’s terribly miscast here. While none of them is a professional voice actor (they’re mostly just regular actors) most of them are great. Matthew Broderick excels as Adam, Barry’s friend. And Renée Zellweger is great as Vanessa, the human friend of Barry. Kathy Bates and Barry Levinson are fantastic as Barry’s parents. But the real MVP here is Chris Rock as Mooseblood the Mosquito. He’s not utilized enough in this movie, and it’s a damn shame. But yeah. When you hear him, you just know he’s gonna steal the scene.

Trying To Cram A Lot Of Things In One Tiny Space Is A Bad Idea

That was true for Spider-Man 3, and it applies here as well. You can have too much of a good thing I guess. But when those ideas get lost in the final product (like it’s the case here) it does create a bit of chaos. The story never gets a focus or a clear narrative because of the many themes, ideas, messages and well humor gets lost in the two target audiences. The same goes for the humor, I guess. For the adults, the humor seems a bit bland, while for the kids the humor brings out lots of confusion.

But overall, it’s a watchable and somewhat funny movie. The memes that resulted from it are golden. Among the many messages it has for the audience, I now understand the role of the bees in nature. And I understand their importance on this planet. I guess that was one of the goals of the movie. Aside from the basic entertainment.
