Larry

I long for posts like this. No, not about adult theme video games like Leisure Suit Larry. I long for posts that are inspired by our readers. And this particular post has reader inspiration/suggestions written all over it.

So, this particular post is not only inspired by our readers. But also the movie suggestions are by one of our dear readers as well. And I’m quite happy that it’s the case, to be honest. Why? Because every feedback, suggestion or even criticism is good in my opinion. And the feedback from our readers is one of the best there is.

Very Different Leisure Suit Larry Picks

As you can probably tell, (just by watching my previous Leisure Suit Larry post) I focused on a set of movies that had quite young Larry-like characters. Characters that are either teenagers or adolescents. And of course, I just knew that that one post won’t be enough. So, thanks to the suggestions from Jay T (hi Jay) we have another reason to look back at this iconic character. In fact, we have three. Indeed, 3 additional picks are enough to expand the Leisure Suit Larry universe. And of course, these new suggestions focus on older, rather more mature Larry like characters, and I love that.

So, let’s give it a shot. Jay, this one is for you.

However, What’s Leisure Suit Larry All About?

Well, developed and published by Assemble Entertainment, it’s an adult-themed video game series created by Al Lowe. And as you can probably tell, we do have plenty of Leisure Suit Larry games here at IndieGala. Individual games and bundles and all you have to do is scroll, take your pick and well… You know the rest.

But as it’s usually the case, we do have some of the Leisure Suit Larry games on sale here at IndieGala. We also have a special bundle, but hurry up since it is not going to last for very long. However, let’s focus on one special Leisure Suit Larry game before I actually focus on the movie pick portion of this post. Let’s focus on Leisure Suit Larry 6 – Shape Up Or Slip Out for a second.

Leisure Suit Larry 6 – Shape Up Or Slip Out In The Focus

Shape Up or Slip Out! is the fifth game in Al Lowe’s Leisure Suit Larry series and again a classic point&click adventure.

All the events from the previous games are forgotten in Shape Up or Slip Out! Larry is now single, and his goal is to capture the interest of various ladies. And now, by sheer coincidence, Larry finds himself on a TV Game Show called “Stallions”. He also wins a weekend at the Spa Resort, La Costa Lotta. So, naturally, there re some beautiful women in the spa, and they are just dreaming about a handsome man like Larry!

And if you need more convinsing, then let some of the Steam comments persuade you:

Another Great Game in this series. Another Must Play!! said xX_Kanestorm_Xx.

While SuperFly said: While other kids grew up on a King’s or a Space Quest — or maybe taking in a Phantasmagoria with a 7th Guest at the 11th Hour — I was beating feet to the mean streets and looking for love in all the wrong places with ‘Leisure Suit Larry’!

However, let’s get back to the topic at hand. The movie picks I mentioned earlier. Here they are. I hope you enjoy them.

Bill Murray’s character Phil in Groundhog Day

This was the first of the three suggestions offered by Jay, and I just have to start with Bill. Believe it or not, I had the pleasure of watching Groundhog Day for the first time just last year. It was one of those movies that I thought were rather boring and repetitive. But ever since I watched it, I can safely say that I liked it. A lot. Bill really carried the movie on his shoulders, and Andie McDowell was just lovely. Not to mention, Groundhog Day also marks the end of the amazing collaboration between Murray and Harold Ramis. But yeah. I’m highly suspicious of movies that involve some time-loop. Mostly because they’re boring and repetitive. So you can understand my apprehension and eventual reluctance. But yeah. I liked it quite a bit. And thanks for the recommendation.

Fun fact: Bill Murray was bitten by the groundhog twice during shooting. Murray had to have anti-rabies injections because the bites were so severe.

Uncle Rico’s Character From Napoleon Dynamite

The second suggestion is Uncle Rico from Napoleon Dynamite. Now, I remember watching Napoleon Dynamite back in 2004. On the actual premiere of the movie, and I vividly remember I didn’t like it all that much. But now, 16 years after the premiere, I decided to give it another shot. Just because of this post, and yeah. The time wasn’t kind to this movie. Nor on my perception of it. However, I still think that Uncle Rico is one of the funniest characters that are ever written. And of course, Jon Gries is outstanding in the role. A middle-aged and flirtatious former athlete who lives in a campervan, treats Napoleon like a child? Yeah, this is a great role. And as Jay pointed out there’s a certain obvious undercurrent in the air whenever he is around underage girls.

Fun fact: Uncle Rico’s girlfriend, who rides up to him on her bicycle at the end of the film, is Aaron Ruell’s (Kip) wife in real life.

Tyler From Heavy Metal 2000

Last but certainly not least. It’s Tyler from Heavy Metal 2000. This is the first adult animated movie on this list, and in it, I’m going to discuss a villainous role for the first time. However, don’t confuse the Heavy Metal 2000 with the original 1981 movie Heavy Metal. This is in fact, the sequel.

Voiced by Michael Ironside, Tyler is an immortality seeking minter turned warlord who’s hobbies include fighting and killing people. Especially Julie and her friends. And yes, the sequel did not meet the expectations and high demands of the fans, but this is a character that deserves to be on this list nonetheless.

Fun fact: While Julie and Germain pursue Tyler before his hyperspace jump, she passes a billboard that features Julie Strain herself on a magazine cover. It reads “Julie Strain: Six foot one and worth the climb”. On the upper right-hand corner of the billboard, it reads “Over 5 trillion sold”.

So, there’s that. I’m so happy about this follow-up post. This is one of the reasons why I love my job in fact. But I’d love to know more.
