And what fine adventures await in Detroit: Become Human. However, I must admit. Of all the things I get to write here at IndieGala, androids are not such a fairly recurring topic. Even for me. Which is odd, because zombies, mutants and vampires are a dime a dozen in my posts. Here’s proof of that. It seems odd that androids are still a mystery to me. But it’s no longer the case. I have a brand new post for them right here and now. And I’m going to relish every aspect of it.
Awesome Selection Of Movies For Detroit: Become Human
Granted in this post I’ll be focusing on video game androids and on movie androids too. The former because we currently have Detroit: Become Human on sale. And the latter because I found 5 awesome movies that feature androids in the plot. Some of them are older movies. And some of them are a lot fresher. But first things first. I believe a word or two about the game is in order.
What’s Detroit: Become Human All About?
Developed and published by Quantic Dream, Detroit: Become Human is a fantastic third-person, adventure game. That we just happen to have it on sale. Hurry up though. That sale is ending really soon, and make sure you get your fix now. But at the same time, Detroit: Become Human is about three androids.
First and foremost there’s Kara (Valorie Curry). A housekeeper/android who escapes her owner to explore her newfound sentience and protect a young girl. Then there’s Connor (Bryan Dechart). A police investigator/android whose job is to hunt down sentient androids. And last but not least, there’s Markus (Jesse Williams). A caretaker/android who devotes himself to releasing other androids from servitude. He also has the power to grant androids free will and calculate the outcomes of certain acts.
Detroit: Become Human puts the destiny of both mankind and androids in your hands. It takes you to a near future where machines have become more intelligent than humans. So, every choice you make affects the outcome of the game. All with one of the most intricately branching narratives ever created.
I mean just take a look at some of the Steam user comments about the game

And What About The Movies?
Well, as I previously mentioned, I have a great selection of old(er) and fresh(er) movies. They’re great, and I think you’ll enjoy them as much as I do. Some most definitely served as inspiration to the game itself. So, with that in mind. Let’s begin, shall we?
Westworld
I’m talking about the 1973 movie. And not about the rebooted TV show that’s currently on air. Indeed, the OG movie that started it all, and you have Michael Crichton to thank for Westworld. And for ER, Jurassic Park, Sphere, The Andromeda Strain… But those are topics for another post. However, here in Westworld, the rich and powerful have a chance to live their dreams and fantasies. In a theme-park filled with adventures.
But 2 of the clients will soon find out that not everything is great with Westworld. And they’ll soon bear the wrath of a vicious rogue Gunslinger. How good is Yul Brynner here? Incredible, just incredible. So are Richard Benjamin and James Brolin too. And yes, I just had to include Westworld in this list.
Fun fact: Both Richard Benjamin and James Brolin were cast less than 48 hours before filming was due to begin.
Blade Runner
I’m going to include the 1982 original Blade Runner movie here. I mean, I love the sequel as well. But the OG movie is the perfect specimen for this list, don’t you think? And Blade Runner is about Rick Deckard. An ex-Blade Runner who will be brought back out of retirement. Four well-known replicants have made their way back to Earth, with their leader being Roy Batty.
So, Deckard’s job is to retire them, but that will prove to be a lot harder task than he initially thought. Let me just tell you how I adore this film. It’s slow, brooding and gorgeous. But at the same time, it’s emotional and thought provoking. And I make it my mission to watch it every now and again. So, I highly recommend it here. You won’t be disappointed.
Fun fact: The director Ridley Scott regards this movie as probably his most personal and complete movie.
A.I.
A.I. Artificial Intelligence or simply A.I. Set in a futuristic post-climate change society, A.I. is about David. Moreover, it tells the story of David (Osment). A childlike android uniquely programmed with the ability to love. So, when he enters a grieving family, things will change for everyone. Not just for David.
Personally, I think this is one of Spielberg’s underrated movies. It’s a good movie that deserves a lot more love. And let’s not forget it has one hell of a talent in the cast too. From Haley Joel Osment in the lead role to Jude Law, Frances O’Connor, William Hurt and Brendan Gleeson. Not to mention the great Robin Williams, Ben Kingsley, Meryl Streep and Chris Rock in voice roles.
Fun fact: When work began on the movie in 1993, Joseph Mazzello was cast as David.
Chappie
Personally, I feel that Chappie is another great yet underrated movie. And I also feel that it didn’t deserve the bad reviews that it got back in 2015. Sure, it’s not perfect, but it’s a fairly decent and entertaining movie. And Chappie is about… Chappie.
A stolen police droid. So when he’ll get new programming, he’ll also become the first robot with the ability to think. And feel for himself. Sharlto Copley is great as Chappie, and so are Dev Patel and Hugh Jackman. Not to mention, Sigourney Weaver who is also exceptional as always. I love this movie indeed. It’s fun and well made. So, yeah, it deserves to be here.
Fun fact: Hugh Jackman uses his natural Australian accent in this movie.
Ex-Machina
If you’ve been reading my posts here at IndieGala, you know by now that I’m a huge fan of Alex Garland. And yes, I consider Ex-Machina as one of his finest works. Domhnall Gleeson is Caleb Smith in Ex-Machina. A geeky, shy programmer who will win a competition from a reclusive and eccentric CEO. The prize is to make a Turing test. On who you might ask? Well, on a female humanoid robot named Ava (Alicia Vikander).
What follows is a tragic tale of betrayal and probably one of the shocking movie endings of all time. Seriously, this movie is fantastic, and yes. It may be last on this list, but it doesn’t mean it’s the least in quality. On contrary. It’s tense and fantastic and it’s a great recommendation for every budding film fan. Garland at its finest.
Fun fact: The location of the house in the movie is the Juvet Landscape Hotel in Norway.
