Civilization VI

Truth be told, this is my second Civilization VI article here at IndieGala. I had my first in April of last year, and if my memory serves me… It was a lot of fun to write. I got to write about epic movies, great leaders from history and the movies that Hollywood made for them. Cool right? I thought so too. Check it out here.

Well, this article is a bit different. With Sid Meier’s Civilization VI Anthology as an inspiration, I intend to focus on a different aspect. A different topic if you will. Not so much on the historic part of the game, but on the anthology part. Yes. The anthology is the main focus of this article, and I plan to divert that focus to a different medium. TV anthologies of course. But more on that a bit later. First and foremost, a word or two about the game is very much needed here.

Civilization VI

What’s Sid Meier’s Civilization VI Anthology All About?

Developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K, Sid Meier’s Civilization VI Anthology is a cool turn-based strategy 4X video game. However, Civilization VI is also a historical strategy game with one goal. To build an empire to stand the test of time. You get to choose a leader and pursue agendas inspired by their real-life counterparts. Physically cities expand across the map, create new strategic possibilities through the game as you pursue one of five ways to achieve victory.

Furthermore, this is the ultimate entry point for gamers new to one of the greatest strategy game series of all time. To explore new land, research technology, conquer your enemies… And go head-to-head with historical leaders as you lead your civilization from rocks to rockets.

Not to mention wer have everything you need in the Anthology content. From Sid Meier’s Civilization VI (available here) to the Civilization VI – New Frontier Pass. Just click here and take your pick.

But what are some of the Steam Reviews saying about it?

  • Yes, not time-consuming at all and doesn’t ruin sleeping schedules, says Esk.
*While MCofDiablo says… Just one more turn and I’m off…That’s the lie I’m telling myself every time I play Civilisation game.

And Which TV Anthologies Go Well With Civilization VI?

Well, much like the title suggest, I’m going to focus on TV anthologies in this article. And not only that, but I’m going with a modern approach as well. The selected TV anthologies are fairly recent, and horror is a predominant genre in them. However, we’d very much like to know your picks too. Which TV anthologies would go well here? Let us know in the comment section.

The Haunting Of Hill House

While the second season (The Haunting of Bly Manor) was a bit of a let-down, the first season (called The Haunting Of Hill House) is a masterpiece. Hauntingly scary, with great direction, set design and performances… The Haunting Of Hill House is a marvel of modern TV. And you have Mike Flanagan to thank for that. However, if you’re looking for a particularly awesome episode, then you should check out “The Bent-Neck Lady” episode. It’s incredible, and you’re welcome.

Fun fact: The Crain children represent the five stages of grief: Denial (Steven), Anger (Shirley), Bargaining (Theo), Depression (Luke), and Acceptance (Nell).

True Detective

Much like The Haunting Of Hill House, True Detective didn’t get a stellar second season. But I was one of few fans that actually liked the sophomore attempt. And I liked the third season as well. But the truth of the matter is that the first season remains the best of the anthology series. It’s filled with great writing, great acting and the southern gothic lore is ever so present. Visually and thematically. Needless to say, it’s one of my favorites, and if you’re looking for proof of that greatness… Then look no further than the one-shot, long scene in the Who Goes There Episode. A true sign of brilliance from director Cary Joji Fukunaga.

Fun fact: Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey are both natives of Texas.

American Horror Story

American Horror Story has been going strong for a decade now. Indeed. It’s the longest-running TV anthology series on this list, but also one of the best. Regardless if you’re fans of Murder House, Freak Show or you’re waiting for the upcoming Double Feature… There’s plenty of everyone. Gritty writing and fine acting are included of course. Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson and Frances Conroy are staples of the anthology series. And so are Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts in some of the seasons. It’s worth the watch.

Fun fact: The Asylum in season two is actually a courthouse in Orange County California.

Black Mirror

Speaking of a long-lasting anthology TV show. However, this one is a bit different than the rest. First and foremost it’s a British production. Secondly, it has 3-6 episodes in a season. And finally, it’s the brainchild of the genius that is Charlie Brooker. Not to mention, it captivated the audience both in the UK and the US. So, it’s no wonder that so many Hollywood actors got roles in the TV series. Bryce Dallas Howard, Jon Hamm, Wyatt Russel just to name a few. Which season is your favorite? Let us know in the comment section.

Fun fact: At some point in each episode, a character says the word “oi”.

Fargo

Fargo has the distinction of being the only anthology series that’s adapted from the previous source material. The 90’s classic Fargo. However, the TV series is a bit different, but damn it’s good nonetheless. Don’t you agree? It has great direction too, and some fine actors. My favorites being Billy Bob Thornton, Martin Freeman, Chris Rock and Jesse Plemons. If you’re a fan of period piece dramas then this is the perfect anthology series for you. It’s funny, tragic, poignant and mind-bending. It’s amazing and the fans love it.

Fun fact: Bob Odenkirk, who portrays Bill Oswalt in season one, and Jesse Plemons, who portrays Ed Blomquist in season two, both appeared in Breaking Bad (2008) as Saul Goodman and Todd, respectively.
