Biohazard

Published and developed by Capcom, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is Capcom going back to the glory days. You might call it even a true survival-horror masterpiece. It’s scary, spooky and creepy in all the right ways, and if you’re a fan of the RE franchise, then you should definitely give it a try.

Not to mention, the atmosphere and the setting are very reminiscent of the first Resident Evil game. Which is a true nod to the spirit of the original. However, you get to play as Ethan Winters from a first-person perspective. As he searches the Baker house for his missing wife. And unlike the predecessors, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard puts a real emphasis on exploration. Over action and horror.

Resident Evil 7 Biohazard: Survival Horror Done Right?

However, you will find earlier inspiration in the setting as well. For instance, the one location setting is clearly a nod to the Evil Dead franchise from the ’80s. But the passing throughout the game is truly masterful in so many ways. You’re in a constant state of anxiety, and the jump scares don’t help all that much. They really heighten the feeling of danger indeed.

And although the scare is very much effective, the exploration is truly the most engaging part of the game. Especially the southern parts of America. Not to forget the intricate design of the house, and the fantastic flashbacks via VHS tape. Which admittedly gives a nice retro vibe to the story.

Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is an atmospheric game with slow-burning attention to detail. But It’s also a great game to get lost into. It’s scary and nicely done. It’s nice going back to the roots of survival-horror, especially after the boulder-bashing 5th entry. And the Michael Bay-inspired 6th entry. But overall it’s a decent game in the Resident Evil vault. It’s worth giving it a try. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard is a good game indeed. At least while waiting for the upcoming sequel, Resident Evil Village.
