ADOM

To be honest, there are two separate motivations for his article. Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos is one of them. And secondly, one other article prompted my interest in this subject. It’s in fact a blog article by the gaming blogger Felipe Pepe and it’s a bit older piece. Well, it’s from April 2020, so yeah. It’s not that current. And of course, the title of that (much longer yet so interesting) blog article is… What makes a good RPG dungeon? Well, it got me intrigued and it also prompted me to find the best (and the worst) video game dungeons out there. Check out the article here.

However, I can’t simply continue with this article without a brief mention of the game itself. So, let me have the pleasure of introducing… Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos.

What’s Ultimate ADOM – Caverns of Chaos All About You Might Ask?

Developed by Thomas Biskup, Jochen Terstiege, Krzysztof Dycha, Lucas Dieguez, Bastian von Gostomski, Carola Sochiera, Björn Loesing and published by Assemble Entertainment, Adom is a great RPG strategy game. And we love great RPG games here at IndieGala.

You get to experience the modern sequel of the traditional rogue-like dungeon-crawling classic. And you get to enjoy unlimited replayability through endless procedural-generated dungeons. Of course, the countless monsters, grafting, crafting and a vast amount of skill trees are here as well.

But What Are Some Of The Steam User Comments Saying About It?

* AndyFred says: As a big fan of the original ADOM, I am similarly delighted by Ultimate ADOM. It has been a joy to discover the many different ways that I can interact with different magics, the environment and the story. Excellent game!

*While: Volpe adds: Much fun after ~10 early access hours and ~5 release hours. Fun fun fun.

And as for that article I mentioned in my intro… What makes a good RPG dungeon? The article is very good. It’s long but yeah. It’s a fairly good I must admit. I’ll put a link here so you can check it out yet again. But in a nutshell, Felipe explores the design of the dungeons, the style, the size and also mention a few great examples from the best modern video games. Which brings me to the next part of the article.

Diablo

An action hack and slash game for the ages. Actually, it’s one of the finest games from the ’90s. And yeah. The original Diablo is set in a single dungeon below the city of Tristram. Furthermore, you are leading your hero down into the very depths of hell. So as you can imagine, there’s lots of hacking, slashing, and a monumental amount of loot collection. And speaking of the dungeons… The dungeon levels are procedurally generated with themes for each level. For instance, the catacombs tend to have long corridors and closed rooms, while the caves are more non-linear. Oh and Diablo IV is currently in development, but it won’t come out in 2021. It’s gonna be a long wait for the fans of Diablo, but hopefully worth the wait.

Deadmines From World Of Warcraft

Deep beneath the mines of Moonbrook in southwestern Westfall lie the Deadmines. Moreover, Deadmines is the first dungeon available to Alliance players and is recommended for players between Level 17 and 21. Furthermore, it is the lowest-level Alliance instance and is populated by members of the Defias Brotherhood. And they might not be the most epic of the dungeons available in Blizzard’s trend-setting MMO…. They are fun nonetheless. Or as one article put it… The Deadmines are a great showcase for the often-overlooked wit and design nous that every corner of World Of Warcraft is covered in.

The Catacombs from Dark Souls

Ah, Dark Souls. My nemesis! Why are you so haaaaard? All joking aside. Dark Souls is not for the rookies, like myself but I’m glad I got to experience those hardships. And I made two articles from those two experiences. You can read them here and here. You’re welcome. But I’m here about the Catacombs. The Catacombs can be accessed right at the start of the game, once you escape from the Undead Asylum and arrive in Lordran. And here’s a fun fact. The Catacombs come from DeS’ Shrine of Storms. They later inspired The Undead Crypt and The Carthus Catacombs. Beautifully difficult, Dark Souls is everything that’s good about modern dungeon crawls. It’s bleak, hopeless, and utterly compelling.

Oh and if you’d like a reminiscence of my struggles trough Dark Souls… By all means here it is. My pain, sweat and tears in one article.

Grimrock From The Legend Of Grimrock

It’s a cool dungeon-crawling role-playing game with an old-school heart but a modern execution. That’s The Legend Of Grimrock all right. But in it, you’re part of a group of prisoners that have been condemned to Mount Grimrock. And of course, the ultimate goal is to escape from the titular prison But also the game is filled with fantasy tropes. In an engaging manner that befits a crawl through a maze. Not to mention it imbues its setting with the legacy of a thousand other fantasy stories. And if you were a fan of the 80’s classic, you’re gonna love Dungeon Master as well. Sure it’s a solitary experience (the dungeon experience), but a damn fine one.

The Water Temple From The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time

Here’s a fun fact about The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time. The creator of the game publicly apologized for it. Indeed. Eiji Aonuma the living legend in the gaming industry publically apologized not just for the game itself. But for the Water Temple too. However, it was inspired by Aonuma’s love for diving and to this day the fans are having a love-hate relationship with this dungeon. Hey, Screen Rant even put in on its number 1 spot of the Worst video game dungeons ever. Shigeru Miyamoto teased Aonuma as well. When an interviewer asked if players could skip The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild’s Water Temple he said… “He didn’t make the dungeons, so we’re fine”.
