Yup. I’m as far away from the celebrity fans of Warhammer as you can probably imagine. But I don’t think that’s a bad thing. No, I get to explore another aspect of the Warhammer universe. The Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie and I’m rather excited about it. I mean, it’s more than a decade-old movie but is it good? For that, you’ll have to scroll down to find out. However, let me start this article with a 40k game.

And what’s the game all about you might ask? Well, Warhammer 40,000: Battlesector is a fast-paced turn-based strategy game set in the grimdark universe of the 41st Millenium. So you can, pick your force, develop your army, field mighty heroes. And fight for victory using superior strategy, awesome abilities, and devastating weaponry.

And Why Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie?
Well, it seems like a nice match. Both of the projects are from the Warhammer 40,000 universe. However, Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie tells a rather different story. The SGI movie is centered around a squad of Ultramarines. Led by Captain Severus (Terence Stamp) they’ll go on a dangerous mission to the unforgiving planet Mithron. They receive a distress call from the planet and their mission is to investigate the situation there. Yes, there’s a full company of Imperial Fists there, but no answer from anyone. The mission is not an easy one, but what they’ll find there will be much more terrifying.
Is It Any Good? One Might Ask?
Well no, not really. It’s sadly not, which is a real bummer. I can imagine that most of the hard-core Warhammer fans will be terribly disappointed. However, not everything is bad in this movie. Indeed. Some positive mentions can be said about the Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie, and I’m here about them. The good and the bad in one place. So… Despite the overall poor quality of the movie, some positives are worth mentioning in this article. OK, let’s start with the good. First and foremost, there’s the fantastic voice acting. I mean, just look at the roster here. My personal favorites are Terence Stamp and John Hurt since they seem most invested and dedicated… Oh, who am I kidding? They’re superb. Although I can’t find faults with the rest of the cast. Make no mistake, this is a seasoned cast, but it’s also a male-dominated one. Seriously, there isn’t a single female character in this movie, but oh well. It is what it is.
Another positive for me was the score, which is epic as one would expect from the Warhammer universe project. It’s grandiose, epic and compliments the lore of the entire Universe beautifully. It’s truly great and it’s one of the high points of the movie. I can’t really share the same high points for the rest of the pieces of the mosaic that is Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie. The other bits and pieces are underwhelming, and obviously, they contribute to the poor review. But let’s start from the top.
Bad Direction, Bad Writing, And Even Worse SGI
Those seem the biggest offenders here, although I’ll get to the smaller ones. First and foremost, let me just mention that this movie is short. At just 70 minutes in length, Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie is a very brief mission for you and the Ultramarines. And despite the cliché one-liners and the lack of originality, the pacing is quite good. Perhaps it’s due to the 70 minutes or run time, but the movie keeps the story well-paced and pretty easy to follow. However, the horrible direction and even worse CGI manage to ruin what would otherwise be a very visceral experience. The Warhammer universe is detailed, imaginative and poignant.
Here we don’t say any of that, although there’s some character interaction because of the story. Because of the tempo, some scenes feel a bit rushed but you can manage to find some decent scenes to praise. I guarantee it. For me, these are the chapel scene and the final fight at the end. But the bad SGI doesn’t do any favors to the movie, that’s for sure. The surroundings are blurry and often dark. And sometimes repetitive. And don’t even get me started on the poor rendering of the Ultramarines. Especially in the close-ups. Uff you can see the biggest drop in quality there I think.
