Hear he hear he. We at IndieGala love everything about the Far Cry series. Especially the Far Cry 6 game. But to be perfectly honest we covered the other Far Cry games. But let’s not forget about the Far Cry film adaptation. An awful movie that coincidently started my unhealthy obsession with Uwe Boll movies. It’s a problem I know. But you can also read my Far Cry film review here.
And here’s the thing. We’re still sticking to the same game series. But with a different actor in it and a different installment. Yes. We’re talking about the Far Cry 6 game.

Far Cry 6 Game And Giancarlo Esposito
The talent of Mr. Esposito doesn’t really need any special introduction. He’s been a fixture on film and TV for the past 40 years or so. And with his illustrious career, he’s been able to portray both heroes and villains with equal gusto. But the phrase „ doesn’t really need any special introduction“ is quite literal in this article. Why? Because 2 years ago, we did a proper introduction of this man. You can read our article here.
And because of that, in this article, I’m gonna focus on a small section of his career. Indeed. Here and now, I’m gonna focus on my favorite Giancarlo Esposito projects. Now, for the most part, I’m gonna focus on his film career, but I’ll touch on his Tv career as well. It’s hard to pick just 5 favorite movies out of the many that this man has on his resume. But hey, I’m also hoping that I can hear your favorite Giancarlo Esposito movies as well.
OK, let’s start, shall we?
King Of New York
My love for neo-noir movies has been well-documented here at IndieGala. But I found Kings Of New York pretty late in my life. I saw this movie for the first time last year, and boy. It was awesome. With Abel Ferrara behind the camera, and with Christopher Walken, Laurence Fishburne, David Caruso, Wesley Snipes, Giancarlo Esposito, and Steve Buscemi in front of it… It cannot be anything but great. Walken has the lead role here. He’s a drug kingpin who’s trying to rebuild his empire after his release from prison. But at the same time, he’s trying to stay away from something that could get him back behind bars. It’s not an easy task that’s for sure. Esposito is in supporting tole duty here, but awesome nonetheless.
Fun fact: Italian political magnate Silvio Berlusconi, financed the film through NY-based producer Jay Julien and Italian intermediaries.
Malcolm X
Another stellar performance from Esposito. And another small, but memorable role. Here in Spike Lee’s Malcolm X, Esposito portrays Talmadge X Hayer. A member of the Nation of Islam and one of the assassins that killed Malcolm X. The real-life character spent 45 years in prison and was paroled in 2010. He’s also one of the few real-life characters from the movie that are still alive. But it’s the legacy of the movie that is still evident 30 years after the premiere. It’s one of the best movies of the ’90s, and I’m glad that Esposito is in it.
Fun fact: The film features three generations of Washington: Denzel Washington, his son John David Washington and his mother Lennis Washington.
The Usual Suspects
Another classic from the ’90s. The Usual Suspects. And another one in which Mr. Esposito has a supporting role. But he’s awesome nonetheless. Giancarlo portrays the FBI Agent Jack Baer and although it’s hard to pick a favorite performance from the movie, Esposito’s has to be in the top 5. I mean in a movie when you have Kevin Spacey, Gabriel Byrne, and Benicio Del Toro (among others)… there’s so much talent to pick and choose from.
Fun fact: Giancarlo Esposito goes on to play a low-key, inconspicuous drug lord/crime boss who regularly talks to and easily dupes law enforcement in Breaking Bad (2008).
Ali
We’re leaving the 90’s for this one. And yes. It’s another supporting role but oh such a great one. Michael Mann’s biopic about Mohammed Ali was a great movie. Will Smith did a stellar job in the titular role. However, Esposito portrays his father Cassius Clay Sr. and you’ve guessed it. He was phenomenal. He portrayed the father with such grace, dignity and conviction, and it couldn’t help but leave a mark on you. You have to watch it.
Fun fact: On June 10, 2016, Will Smith was a pallbearer at the real Muhammad Ali’s funeral.
The Boys
He’s part of the recurring cast of the Boys but his role as Stan Edgar is so memorable you just can’t help but mention it. Stan Edgar is an antagonist, but Stan Edgar is a stoic, serious and imposing man. He’s very bossy and only interacts with people for business reasons. He is one of the few people who is not afraid of Homelander and he even mocks him by calling him “man-child”. Yup. He is an intimidating man, with a commanding and imposing presence. He was even able to intimidate Homelander himself. And you owe much of those traits (and flaws) to Esposito himself.
Fun fact: His comic book counterpart does not physically appear in the comics and is only ever referred to as “Mr. Edgar”.
Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul
Ah, Gus. As a stoic businessman, Gus was created to be opposite to that of the chaotic Tuco and act as a foil to Walter White. But he turned out to be so much more. He turned out to be an iconic character that is feared as much as he’s beloved. TV Guide named him No. 3 in their 2013 list of The 60 Nastiest Villains of All Time. While Rolling Stone ranked him No. 7 of their “40 Greatest TV Villains of All Time.
Sure I could have added the role of Moff Gideon to this list. But I feel that Gus will resonate with so many of the fans of both of these TV shows. He’s so diabolic and calculating, but you couldn’t take your eyes off him. As one fan put it… He doesn’t just play his characters well. He understands them, they are like a part of him. Quite literally on another level of acting.
Fun fact: The Far Cry 6 Game reunited him with his Better Call Saul colleague Michael Mando.
