Surviving the Aftermath is a rather new game for me here at IndieGala’s blog. Although the themes of survival games and post-apocalyptic settings games are nothing new for us… We are loving the novelty of the game here at this blog. We sure are. And when it comes to survival/post-apocalyptic games, there are plenty to choose from IndieGala. Not to brag or anything, but yeah. The picks are almost endless here. Well, at IndieGala and its blog since we wrote a lot about them.
Just last year we covered Rage 2 (check it out here), Biomutant (here) and yes. Bomb Drop Day. The quintessential day for every Fallout fan. You can read all about it here. But before we get to the point of this article, it’s best to let you more about the game that started it all.
Surviving the Aftermath: What’s It All About You Might Ask?
Developed by Iceflake Studios and published by Paradox Interactive, Surviving the Aftermath is a fantastic simulation/strategy game that allows you to survive and thrive in a post-apocalyptic future. Here and now, resources are scarce but opportunity calls. Build the ultimate disaster-proof colony. Furthermore, protect your colonists, and restore civilization to a devastated world.
Oh and don’t forget to go beyond the colony and explore the wastelands. Why? In order to gather resources, meet rival colonies, and fight off bandits.
Yes. You can build and manage a colony of survivors after a world-ending event. You can also construct more than 61 unique buildings to handle everything. From resource collection and farming to exploration and security. Are you up for it?

And Which Are Some Of The Most Awesome And Realistic Post-Apocalyptic games out there?
Fallout: New Vegas
First and foremost, this game is not only one of the most beloved post-apocalyptic games of all time. But also, one of the best RPGs ever. But What makes New Vegas so special though is that it isn’t set in a post-apocalyptic hellscape. Instead, it’s set 200 years after the bombs fell, with all of the advances you’d expect. And the setting is part-Mad Max wasteland, part-wild west film and part-fully functioning society.
But even with all that said, it’s a pretty accurate depiction of the nuclear annihilation aftermath. This game series has borrowed strongly from the classic “post-apo” Mad Max films but the thing is… Dystopias are always at their best when they use their setting to play with expectations. And probe at aspects of humanity too. Sure, games like Bioshock have been rightly praised for this. For bringing setting and story to the fore. But New Vegas more than earns its place at the table, too. And in a fantastic way, we might add.

The Last Of Us
While we wait for the upcoming The Last Of Us TV adaptation, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Back in 2013 when the game was released and it gave us some of the most realistic post-apocalypse/survival mode depictions ever. But in the center of the story are Joel and Ellie. The survivors of an apocalypse. However, we first meet the characters 20 years after a certain pandemic takes over. And 60 percent population of the world. In simpler terms, The Last of Us is a classic ‘Let’s Survive a Zombie apocalypse’ scenario.
It’s gripping and realistic in the survival mechanism and the dark realities of our crumbling society. And yeah. Joel and Ellie survive together in a modern fungal-based pandemic that turns humans into zombies. Furthermore, the horror element of The Last of Us is all the more disturbing. Why? Because it is based on processes in the natural world. Not to mention, the infection that blazes through the world of The Last of Us is based on the Ophiocordyceps unilateralis fungus. A fungus that targets carpenter ants and then leaps into the human domain. Add to that, Martial law, quarantines, riots, and militia groups and you’ve got yourself one hell of a scary possibility.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Shadow Of Chernobyl
This one is a bit special because the horrific event that started the apocalypse had a real-life inspiration. Indeed. The game is actually set after a fictitious second Chornobyl disaster. An event that further contaminated the surrounding area with radiation. And subsequently caused strange otherworldly changes in local fauna, flora, and the laws of physics. Furthermore, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. takes place in an area called the Zone. Which is based on the real-life Chornobyl Exclusion Zone, and if that doesn’t inflict fear, then we don’t know what does. And all of this mixed with the atmospheric setting and the encapsulating story of Shadow Of Chernobyl make it one hell of a game to play. If you’re into the post-apocalyptic survival genre that is.
