Oscars 2023

Well, the Oscars 2023 are precisely that. A delicate mix of rookies and legends. I’ll explain more about that later in this article. But first, let me just mention that it’s not the first Oscars article we’ve had here at Indiegala. Our Oscar analysis has been an essential part of our yearly March articles. You can check out our previous articles here. They’re good.

But before we get to the bare essence of this topic, let us just mention some of the fine sales, bundles and deals we got for you at IndieGala. You can take a closer look at them if you go to IndieGala’s official website and pick the best one for you.

Oscars 2023: What’s The Big Deal?

Well, as we mentioned earlier, the 95th edition of the Academy Awards is all about Rookies. Yes. 16 out of the 20 nominees in the 4 separate acting categories are rookies. Or actors with no previous Oscar nominations. Just four of them have been previously nominated for an Oscar. Michelle Williams for the Fabelmans, Angela Bassett for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Cate Blanchett for Tár and Judd Hirsch for The Fabelmans are all previous Oscar nominees.

All of the rest are not, and it’s wonderful to see the joy and excitement in their Oscar campaign. Especially for Brandon Fraser (nominated for best Leading role). And of course for Ke Huy Quan who’s nominated for his role in Everything Everywhere All at Once. Both of these men were kinda left out of Hollywood and forgotten for so long. But Hollywood loves a good comeback and theirs is nothing short of spectacular.

Oscars 2022: Rookies And Legends

We really mean it. 2023 is truly a year of rookies and legends. We have rookies like Paul Mescal who got his first Oscar nomination for the drama Aftersun. And at the same time, we have Hollywood royalty like Jamie Lee Curtis. At the ripe age of 64, she got her first Oscar nomination (for the best supporting role) and her reaction was priceless.

There’s Barry Keoghan who at the age of 30 got his first Oscar nod (for his performance in The Banshees of Inisherin. And on the other side, there’s Judd Hirsch. The legend is 87 years old and got his second Oscar nomination (for his performance in The Fabelmans). Furthermore, this is Judd’s second Oscar nod, and first after a long pause (more than 4 decades long pause). Yes, he got his first Oscar nod in the early 80s for his role in Ordinary People. Cool right?

You want more rookies? Sure. We got some more rookies for ya. Colin Farrell, Brian Tyree Henry, Austin Butler, Bill Nighy and Brendan Gleeson are all first-time nominees. However, Michelle Yeoh, Ana de Armas, Hong Chau, Stephanie Hsu, Kerry Condon and Andrea Riseborough are also rookies and it’s fantastic. I’ll get to the stupid and very fabricated controversy about Andrea Riseborough’s nomination in a moment. But first, let’s focus on more cool nominations.

Tom Cruise, Roger Deakins, Guillermo del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón, Lady Gaga And More…

All right. If you paid close attention to the nomination announcements, you probably noticed the name Tom Cruise. He’s got his nomination for producing (Top Gun Maverick) and this is his first nomination after more than 20 years. Yes, it’s been a while for Tom Cruise. Roger Deakins got his 16th Oscar nomination for best cinematography (for Empire of Light). Guillermo Del Toro got an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature Film (for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio).

Oscars 2023

But who can forget about one other talented Mexican? Alfonso Cuaron is an Oscar nominee as well, and he’ll be competing in the Best Live-Action Short Film category. For the music fans out there, Lady Gaga is Oscar-nominated yet again, but this time for the “Hold My Hand” song from Top Gun: Maverick. Everything Everywhere All at Once leads the 2023 Oscars with 11 nominations, while All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin are close runner-ups with 9 nominations each.

But What’s The Deal With Andrea Riseborough’s Nomination?

Nothing. It’s not a big deal. In fact, it’s a classic case of beating the system. A David VS Goliath if you will, and I’m glad she got a nomination in the matter that she did. By sheer pulling some strings, influencing and calling some favors in Hollywood. Nothing that Harvey Weinstein and company haven’t been doing for decades. And nothing that Hollywood isn’t doing right now, but with money and money alone. The team behind To Leslie didn’t have the money to pull an expensive Oscar campaign so they resorted to affiliate marketing. And aggressive influencer campaigns from Hollywood A-listers in order to spread the word. Not to mention… make the Academy to even consider an Oscar nomination for Andrea Riseborough.

Andrea Riseborough VS Old Hollywood: Andrea 1: Hollywood 0

Heck yeah, it is. Among those who have lobbied for Riseborough’s performance were Jodie Comer, Kate Winslet, Amy Adams, Edward Norton, and Melanie Lynskey. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jane Fonda, Jennifer Aniston, and fellow nominee Cate Blanchett were full of praise for Andrea. The director of To Leslie Michael Morris and Riseborough also hired publicists to coordinate the efforts.  It worked, and she got an Oscar nomination for the fraction of the cost. It’s called smart PR strategy and her management should get an Oscar just for that.

Look, other actresses in the past have been pulling the same stunts and didn’t get shamed or blamed in public quite like Andrea did. But I applaud the smart and out-of-the-box thinking. Good for her. She took things into her own hands. She knew her worth and didn’t just sit around and let the studio to do her bidding. To be fair, there’s no studio behind her. Just very smart and competent friends and colleagues. So… God job Andrea’s team.

The Oscar ceremony is upon us. The date is March 12, 2023. The Host is Jimmy Kimmel and the venue is the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
