Golden Globes 2021

Are you excited for Golden Globes 2021? I know I am. And so are the rest of the wonderful boys and girls at IndieGala. But yeah. I’ve been following the Award circuit for more than two decades now. And professionally for almost one decade. So, I think I know my way around the Hollywood award circuit.

And with that in mind, I decided to focus on an entire post for the upcoming Golden Globes 2021 ceremony. Sure I already talked about the state of the film and TV industry, during this awful pandemic. Here’s a good reminder of that if you care to go back to the wretched times of 2020. However, due to the ongoing pandemic outside, even the 2021 Golden Globe ceremony will be different. But more on that later.

Time, Place, Hosts, And Details For Golden Globes 2021

First and foremost, the ceremony will take place on February 28, 2021. Indeed, nearly two months later than normal Golden Globe ceremonies. But these are anything but normal times we’re living in. So, changes are in order, don’t you think? Yes. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are two of the selected hosts for the evening, but here’s the kicker. Tina Fey will be co-hosting from the Rainbow Room in New York City. While Amy Poehler will be co-hosting from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

And as you may know, both Tina and Amy previously hosted the same ceremony in 2013, 2014, and 2015. So, the ladies really know what they’re doing. You’re in good hands film buffs.

Golden Globes 2021: Who’s Up For Grabs?

A disclaimer is in order here I think. While I adore the Golden Globes… In this particular post, I’ll focus on the film section of the awards. And I’ll leave out the TV portion for a separate post. So, with that in mind…who’s up for grabs? Well, I’ll go over the individual categories one by one. But for now, I’ll just mention that David Fincher’s biopic Mank is leading the film portion of the awards with 6 nominations in total. The Trial of the Chicago 7 is right behind Mank with 5 nominations. While The Father, Promising Young Woman and Nomadland have 4 nominations each. Yeah, there’s no love for the Monster Hunter movie adaptation this time.

Ceremony Of Surprises?

I would argue that it is. First of all, there has never been a Best director category with 3 female directors as nominees. Ever. So, that’s a surprise. Emerald Fennell, Regina King and Chloe Zhao are the three ladies that will be fighting for the award. Along with side David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin respectively. Zhao is the favorite to win here, but Fincher and Sorkin are close contenders.

And in terms of the best motion picture drama, I think that Nomadland is a shoo-in winner here. Despite some hefty competition from The Father, Mank, Promising Young Woman and The Trial Of The Chicago 7.

However, in the best motion picture -musical or comedy, Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is the real favorite for the Golden Globe win. Hamilton may complicate things for Borat. But not the rest of the movies in this category I’m afraid. The Prom, Palm Springs and Music are not really a threat here. They’re a nice company for Borat, but not a threat.

Actors In Drama And Comedy: Golden Globes 2021

The late Chadwick Boseman is a Golden Globe nominee (posthumous) in the best actor in Motion Picture – Drama. And yes, I think that The Hollywood foreign press will award him for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. But the 2 Oscar winners (the acting legends Gary Oldman and Anthony Hopkins) are also strong contenders here. Riz Ahmed for The Sound Of Metal and Tahar Rahim for The Mauritanian are sadly not.

In my humble opinion, Sacha Baron Cohen is the winner in the best actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. He was great as Borat Sagdiyev yet again. And I also think that he could win (also) because of the current political climate. But Lin Manuel Miranda is the fan-favorite here, and he could surprise plenty of people in this category. However, if I could vote for this particular award, my vote would go on Andy Samberg for Palm Springs. James Corden’s nomination is an unfortunate mistake here, and a sad smudge for the award ceremony.

Actresses In Drama And Comedy

And what about the ladies? Well in the best actress in a drama category, there will be a real battle. Between Frances McDormand for Nomadland and Carey Mulligan for Promising Young Woman. However, Viola Davies and Vanessa Kirby can surprise in this category too. Viola for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Vanessa for Pieces Of A Woman.

And how about the ladies in the Musical or Comedy? Maria Bakalova’s nomination for Borat Subsequent Moviefilm is the real shocker here. And so is Kate Hudson’s nomination for Music. But I would put my money on Michelle Pfeiffer (for the French Exit) or Rosamund Pike (for I Care A Lot). Sadly Anya Taylor-Joy and her version of Emma don’t stand a chance here. She’s good but she should expect more luck for the win in the TV portion of the ceremony.

Don’t Forget The Supporting Roles!

Indeed, Sacha Baron Cohen is another nominee here, but here for his supporting role in The Trial of the Chicago 7. And I wouldn’t go so far as to say that he’s a favorite, but he could surprise a lot of people in this category. Leslie Odom Jr (for One Night In Miami) and Daniel Kaluuya (for Judas and the Black Messiah) are also strong contenders. But sadly Jared Letto (for The Little Things) and Bill Murray (for On The Rocks) are not.

However, Amanda Seyfried (for Mank) and Jodie Foster for The Mauritian will be budding heads for the win in the ladies’ department. Olivia Coleman (The Father) is another strong candidate, and so is Glenn Close. For the Hillbilly Elegy. But sadly, the 12-year old newcomer Helena Zengel is not.

Interesting Choices In The Best Screenplay Category

I would say eclectic. There are two women there (Emerald Fennell and Chloe Zhao), there’s Aaron Sorkin for The Trial Of The Chicago 7. Furthermore, there are Florian Zeller and Christopher Hampton for The Father. And Jack Fincher for Mank. However, much like with Chadwick, Jack is another deceased nominee. Indeed, he’s been dead since 2003, but his son David Fincher used his script in order to make Mank.

Soul is probably the favorite in the Best animated movie category. While Minari and The Last Round are the favorites in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
