Days Of War

Frankly, there are several reasons for the making of this post. It’s not solely the addition of Days Of War in our store.

No, Days Of War is just a fraction of the motif here. Great inspiration for writing this post, but not the only one I must add. First and foremost, there’s the fantastic Graffiti sale here at IndieGala. The sale just started, so there’s plenty of time to acquire some of Graffiti’s finest games. However, I must also mention that Days Of War is part of the Graffiti sale, and you should check it out. You’re going to love it.

Days Of War and one bad-ass WW2 vet

And last but not least, the month of June coincides with the death of one very special person. My grandfather. He was a WW2 veteran who fought tirelessly against the Nazis. He was even awarded a special medal for bravery because he helped to save his platoon from being captured and turned into POW. Yeah, he was a true bad-ass, and I’m really sad that I never had the chance to meet him. He died 5 years before I was born. But his tales of bravery (to this very day) are legendary in my family, and he’s sorely missed.

However, I must also mention that this isn’t my first attempt in writing a military-themed post. I’ve written extensively about all types of sniper movies, movies that feature special ops forces and even air combat movies. They were fun and exciting, but it’s time for me to go way back in the middle of the 20th century, and one of the scariest wars of all time. World War 2.

Finally, before I dive into the topic of this post, a word or two about the game is in order.

Days Of War

Days Of War: What’s the game all about?

Developed by Driven Arts and published by Graffiti Games, Days Of War is a blast from a very dark past. Days Of War is at the same time a multiplayer first-person shooter video game. In it, you can experience the heart-pounding, bullet-flying action of World War 2 like never before.

In this competitive, team-based first-person shooter, you will dive into nonstop combat across several theaters of WW2. You can also play online in a 32-player multiplayer or hone your skills offline against bots and in the gun range.

Days of War feature four types of gameplay: capture the flag; deathmatch; search and destroy; and domination. Also, players can select from six classes of infantry including rifleman; machine gunner; and sniper. Give it a try.

Why Do We Go Back To WW2?

Furthermore, why do we keep producing WW2 inspired movies, video games and other types of entertainment? Are we taking that war for granted that we’ve turned into forms of entertainment?

My view on this issue is… No. Far from it. It’s like the title of this post suggests.

We must acknowledge and remember the past, and by creating movies, video games, comic books on this subject, we’re doing just that. Whether it’s just the life and struggle of one individual during the war, or a key event in WW2 that affected millions of lives , it’s worth mentioning it for sure.

Precisely because of that sentiment, we now have movies like Saving Private Ryan and The Pianist. One man’s struggle during the war doesn’t diminish the suffering of millions of soldiers I’m sure. But it’s nice to be reminded of some of the individuals as well.

Days Of War

The world was a battlefield?

And as a result of the global engagement during WW2, you can safely say that almost the entire world was a battlefield. Because of the global impact of the war, we now have movies like Schindler’s List, Flags of Our Fathers, The Boy In The Striped Pajamas, Life Is Beautiful, The Bridge on the River Kwai and Das Boot. Movies set on different locations around the globe, but at the same time movies that feature the same war. WW2.

While the historical accuracy of the movies in question is debatable, their cultural and historical impact is not up for debate. To this very day, WW2 movies are somber reminders of a history that should not repeat itself. But at the same time, a history that should not be forgotten.

So, because of that, I feel that it’s good that we have WW2 themed movies, video games and whatnot. Games like Days Of War and movies like Patton for instance are our attempts to bring some of that history back to life. So we don’t forget it of course.

The best WW2 movies: my picks

Finally, who are some of the best WW2 movies of all time? Well, aside from the aforementioned movies in this post, I really think that Thin Red Line is a true masterpiece. Sophie’s Choice is one of the most heartbreaking movies of all time.

Casablanca is an all-time classic of course, but I also adore one additional Steven Spielberg WW2 movie. Empire Of The Sun. It’s incredible and I highly recommend it. Come And See was also an incredible movie, and I must also mention Dunkirk here. It’s incredible, and I feel that it’s one of Christopher Nolan’s best movies to date.

However, I can’t help but mention one of the greatest anti-war movies of all time. Charlie Chaplin’s masterpiece, The Great Dictator. A satire that mocked Hitler and a movie that was released during the peak of Hitler’s reign of terror. Only Chaplin had the guts to make a movie like this in a time like that. The Great Dictator was his first talkie, but it’s been a true classic for almost 8 decades now.

And I feel that I will certainly forget to mention some other great WW2 movie. There are so many of them, regardless if they’re from Hollywood or not.
