Georgia O’Keeffe

A TV movie sure, but at the same time a fantastic movie to start this list. But as the title suggests, this is a biopic about the noted American painter Georgia O’Keeffe. And her husband, the photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Joan Allen portrays Georgia, while Jeremy Irons occupies the role of Alfred Stieglitz. It’s a great movie that deserves your attention. With great performances and a fantastic script. It’s a must-watch.

Fun fact: Georgia O’Keeffe was right-handed. But the actress who portrays her (Joan Allen) is left-handed.

Paula

Paula is the 2016 biopic about Paula Modersohn-Becker. One of the best Expressionist painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She’s the first woman to have a museum devoted exclusively to her art. The Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum was founded in 1927. Additionally, she is considered to be the first woman artist to depict herself both pregnant and nude and pregnant. However, her life was cut short at just 31, a couple of days after giving birth. Carla Juri portrays Paula and it’s also a must-watch.

Fun fact: La Marseillaise is used in the soundtrack of the movie.

Séraphine

Another biopic and another great painter. Séraphine follows the life of a middle-aged housekeeper/cleaning lady, Séraphine Louis. Who coincidently has a remarkable talent for painting. Yes. A reluctant painter who’ll get discovered by a small lucky break. This is that fascinating story, and it’s one of the best movies you’ll watch. Yolande Moreau portrays the titular character, while Ulrich Tukur is the famous art collector Wilhelm Uhde.

Fun fact: Since the film’s release, the number of visitors to the museum of Senlis exhibiting Séraphine’s works has quadrupled.

Maudie

Maudie is about the life of folk artist Maud Lewis, who painted in Nova Scotia. Also, it’s about struggles with rheumatoid arthritis and the memory of a lost child. Oh and a family that doubts her abilities, before moving in with a surly fish peddler (Hawke) as a housekeeper. Sally Hawkins portrays Maud Lewis while Ethan Hawke portrays the inarticulate and rough fish peddler Everett Lewis. It’s a wonderful movie that deserves your attention.

Fun fact: Sally Hawkins replaced Rachel McAdams in the lead role.

Frida

Who doesn’t know about Frida Kahlo? The talented yet tragic Mexican painter? Well, Julie Taymor immortalized her in the 2002 biopic, Frida. Salma Hayek portrayed Frida to perfection, and rightfully earned herself an Oscar nomination for that role. Alfred Molina portrayed Frida’s unfaithful husband Diego Rivera, while Geoffrey Rush was superb as Leon Trotsky. Frida is one of the finest movies in Salma’s career and yes. It’s a movie you shouldn’t miss.

Fun fact: Frida Kahlo’s niece was so impressed with the film that she gave Salma Hayek one of Kahlo’s necklaces.
