Maneater Game

Writing about animals is one of my favorite activities here at IndieGala. The Maneater Game is no exception, despite the fact I’ll get to write about sharks. Hey, sharks are cool too. Sure, I’ve had the pleasure to write about more cute and cuddly animals. Like cats, dogs and even squirrels like Scrat from the Ice Age franchise. Check it out here. But the big, scary animals count as well. Rhinos are a particular favorite of mine, and so are sharks. Which is why I’m excited about the Maneater Game.

What’s Maneater Game All About?

Developed by Tripwire Interactive and published by Iceberg Interactive, Maneater is an action role-playing game played from a third-person perspective. It’s a fantastic RPG in which the player (or you in this case) assume the role of a baby shark. However, the shark in question is on a revenge mission. A hunter named Scaly Pete killed his mother and disfigured the baby shark, so he must avenge her death. Furthermore, the shark has several basic attacks. Charging into enemies, siloing out of the water and whipping enemies with its tail to stun them.

Oh did we mentioned that the story-based campaign is narrated by Chris Parnell (Rick and Morty, Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock)? And it’s also set against the backdrop of a reality TV show? Well, it is and it’s waiting for you to try it out. Do it here.

Oh, and you’re not a fan of the Maneater game, don’t despair. We have plenty of other aquatic games as well. Planet Zoo: Aquatic Park is available for purchase here. And so is Aquanox Deep Descent (available here). Take your pick and enjoy.

But what are some of the Steam user comments saying about Maneater Game?

  • I would have to rate the game 9/10 says Arks
  • While Sh4rkN4t0r adds… Still a good game! I love sharks and I enjoy playing this game.

And Which Movies Go Well With The Maneater Game?

Well, movies with sharks as the main star of course. Now we have an eclectic selection of shark-related movies here, and they’re all fun. Frankly, do you really need a special occasion to watch a shark-filled movie? No, they’re always fun. But we do have older movies and movies that are a lot more recent. Furthermore, we have horror movies, thrillers and even animated movies on the list. And we’ll just have to patiently wait for the Big White to come out next month.

So, let’s start, shall we?

Jaws

There’s no way to avoid it. And why would you really? It’s the daddy of all shark horror movies and still holds up to this day. Not to mention, it’s one of Steven Spielberg’s finest movies. But yeah. As the title suggests, Jaws is about a man-eating great white shark that terrorizes a small resort town. So a team of a marine biologists and a shark hunter join forces with the local mayor to kill the shark. And save the rest of the summer season.

But what is left to be said about Jaws really? It’s a true classic, and one of the finest movies that have even been made. With superb direction from Spielberg and outstanding music from John Williams. Not to mention the fantastic acting from Roy Scheider, Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss. It’s a tense, scary and nail-biting experience that so many directors want to match since. But not that many of them successfully can.

Fun fact: Over 67 million people in the U.S. went to see this film when it was initially released in 1975, making it the first summer “blockbuster.”

The Meg

Well, The Meg is about The Meg. Or the Megalodon. The largest marine predator that has ever existed and by some miracle still exists in Marianas Trench. But aside from the science fiction nature of the entire premise, The Mag has a solid cast too. Jason Statham, Bingbing Li, Rainn Wilson are part of the cast, and so is Ruby Rose. Oh, and if you’re a fan of The Meg, then watch out for the sequel. Indeed. The shooting of the sequel will begin next year, and Ben Whitley is the designated director now.

Fun fact: The scene where Meg is pulling one, then two, then three of the floating docks is a subtle homage to Jaws (1975) with the barrels.

The Shallows

Unlike The Meg, The Shallows is about a different type of shark attack. One that’s about 200 meters from the shore and that’s terrorizing the college student Nancy (Blake Lively). But despite the injuries, she must try to fend off the predator and get back to the shore alive. Yes, The Shallows is a fantastic thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat. For the most part, it has only one character in the focus. And honestly, it really takes a lot of creativity to make the movie entertaining with one human character and one aquatic character.

Fun fact: Blake Lively’s orange bikini was a gift from fashion designer Tory Burch.

Open Water

Open Water is one of the most horrifying movies in existence. And the fact that it’s inspired by a real-life event, makes it even that much scarier. But Open Water is about a couple that’s going to get left behind on a scuba-diving vacation. They’ll have to spend some time in the open water, but they’ll become easy prey to everything in that water. From jellyfish to sharks. This is a scary and heartbreaking movie and if you can stomach with pausing, you’re a much stronger person than I am. But yes. This is one hell of a movie and a must-watch for every survival horror fan.

Fun fact: Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis spent over 120 hours in the water throughout production.

Deep Blue Sea

This is probably the second oldest movie on this list but at the same time one of the most fun. And much like the title suggests, it’s about the Deep Blue Sea. More importantly, about the engineered and very smart sharks that are in the underwater research facility. But aside from having one of the most bonkers plots, the movie has one of the coolest cast ever. Thomas Jane, Saffron Burrows, Samuel L. Jackson are in it, and so are Stellan Skarsgård and LL Cool J. Nice!

Not to mention. Brian Raftery from Wired considers Deep Blue Sea as “the greatest non-Jaws shark movie of all time” and yes. If you haven’t seen it by now, you should watch it. Immediately. It’s bonkers as it is fun.

Fun fact: Director Renny Harlin has said that this was the hardest film he’s ever made.

Shark Tale

And let’s end this list with an animated movie about sharks. A movie with a lighter tone. But at the same time, Shark Tale has an impressive ensemble cast starring the voices of actors. First and foremost, there’s Will Smith. Then there are Robert De Niro, Renée Zellweger, Angelina Jolie, Jack Black. And finally, there’s the one and only Martin Scorsese. The sea underworld in Shark Tale is shaken up when the son of shark mob boss Don Lino (Robert De Niro) is found dead. And a young fish named Oscar (Will Smith) is found at the scene. However, Oscar must take advantage of the situation and makes himself look like he killed the finned mobster. If he wants to stay alive. But that’s a lot harder to pull off in practice. Don’t you think?

Fun fact: This was Will Smith’s only animated movie until Spies in Disguise (2019).
