Risk of Rain 2

Believe it or not, Risk Of Rain 2 is a first for me. I’ve not written about this particular game before. Nor have I written about the original 2013 game. I never thought I’d have first by now, but I do and I love it. Every opportunity to write about some new game (or topic for that matter) brings out giddy excitement like no other.

And what Risk Of Rain 2 brings to the table here? Well, here in this particular article I’m going to focus on the topics of sequels. Since the video game is a sequel of course (an amazing one, to be more precise). But more on that later in this article. I believe a word or two about the game itself is very much needed.

What’s Risk of Rain 2 All About?

Developed by Hopoo Games and published by Gearbox Publishing, Risk Of Rain 2 is a rogue-lite third-person shooter game. But over here in this sequel, over a dozen handcrafted locales await. Each packed with challenging monsters and enormous bosses that oppose your continued existence. So you get to fight your way to the final boss and escape. Or you can continue your run indefinitely to see just how long you can survive. A unique scaling system means both you and your foes limitlessly increase in power throughout a game. Not to mention, killing aliens gains experience and currency. And of course, the currency can be used to open chests that randomly drop items on the level.

And which movies belong to the list?

Well, this is a job for movie sequels. And not just any movie sequels, but some of the best movie sequels of all time. Sure, we could have gone with the „stranded on a remote planet“ theme here… But the movie sequels aspect of the game seemed a lot more appealing. So, with that being said… Which movies made the cut here? Scroll down to find out.

Terminator 2

Don’t get me wrong. The original 1984 movie is good, but the 1991 sequel is a true masterpiece. Which is why belongs on this list. Terminator 2 is a far better movie than the original. Schwarzenegger, Hamilton and Edward Furlong as the young John Connor are fantastic, but three other things stand out in the sequel. The script, the direction from James Cameron and the killer CGI. Indeed. The special effects were revolutionary and in case you were wondering… Expensive. The creation of the visual effects cost $5 million (in 1991 money). Not to mention it took around 35 people, including animators, computer scientists, technicians, and artists, ten months to produce. Or in other words… A total of 25 man-years. This is one of the best movies of the ’90s and it’s a shame that the franchise took a nosedive since T2.

Fun fact: With the film’s domestic box-office adjusted for inflation, it is the top-grossing R-rated action film of all time.

X2: X-Men United or simply X2. It’s the 2003 sequel to X-Men, and yes. It’s so much better than the original. The writing is so much better (thanks to the efforts of Michael Dougherty, Dan Harris and yes David Hayter). Hey I already devoted an entire article for Hayter so you should check it out here) but aside from the introduction of the new characters (hello Nightcrawler)…There’s a whole new and interesting story in X2 too. And yes, the story along with the writing is what makes this movie better than the original. X2 is emotional and all-around fabulous, and yes. Deserves to be on this list.

Fun fact: Neil Patrick Harris auditioned for the role of Nightcrawler, but lost out to Alan Cumming, who speaks fluent German.

The Godfather Part II

The perfect example of a sequel being better than the original movie. Oh, how incredible this movie is? Seriously, you can keep trying to fund faults with it… But the only flaw that The Godfather Part has is that it’s too perfect. The direction, the script, the acting. You have some of the titans of acting in Part 2, and Francis Ford Coppola on top of his form. Not to mention it showed us the moral bankruptcy of one of the most iconic characters of all time Michael Corleone. This is one hell of a movie, and one hell of a sequel. I highly recommend it.

Fun fact: To prepare for his role, Robert De Niro lived in Sicily for three months.

Before Sunset

The Before trilogy is one of the finest out there. However, Before Sunset is arguably one of the best sequels in the entire film history. And it just goes to show that you don’t really need cars, fights and explosions to keep up the interest of your audience. Two people walking around Paris and just talking about well everything can be entertaining AF. Which is what Jesse and Celine are doing in this movie. And you don’t feel boredom or anything remotely similar to that. It’s refreshing and so romantic too. This is one of the best movies of Richard Linklater’s career and deserves to be on this list.

Fun fact: Roger Ebert wrote, “Before Sunrise was a remarkable celebration of the fascination of good dialogue. But Before Sunset is better, perhaps because the characters are older and wiser, perhaps because they have more to lose (or win). And perhaps because Hawke and Delpy wrote the dialogue themselves.”

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Another great trilogy and another fantastic sequel, that’s better than the original movie. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is the sequel to 2011 Rise of the Planet of the Apes and it’s fantastic. It’s emotional, immersive, beautiful. Not to mention filled with great acting (especially from Andy Serkis) and great direction from Matt Reeves. Dawn is set 10 years after the events of Rise. And follows a group of people in San Francisco who struggle to stay alive in the aftermath of a plague that wiped out most of humanity But seriously, the emotional death that this movie has will leave you speechless. Which is why deserves to be on this list. It may be the last movie on this list, but it’s not the least by any means necessary.

Fun fact: The photographs of Dreyfus’ children are of Gary Oldman’s children in real life.
