Hardly. But Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is a new game for us. And when it comes to the rankings of the previous installments…. It’s not easy to do it. It’s always a subjective personal opinion of the fans that will cause the most drama in the comment section. We get it, there are good and there are bad games in the cult series. But instead of taking the heath for creating one such ranking list, it would be wise to let someone else do it. Why?
Well, for one we’ve not written on the Dynasty Warriors series before at the IndieGala’s blog. Yes. This is our first article about the series overall. And secondly, we don’t want to „stir the pot“ unnecessarily.
However, we do enjoy writing about plenty of other open world games. My colleague’s take (The Italian Guy) on the open world games is a particularly great read. You can look back at it here.
However, we can’t go any further with this article without mentioning the game itself. The game that inspired it.
What’s Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires All About?
Published and developed by KOEI TECMO GAMES CO., LTD. Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires is a strategy-focused expansion of the game.
It’s also a new release for the “Empires” series, which allows users to enjoy both the thrill of one-versus-a-thousand action. And the intricacy of country conquering simulation.
Combat has evolved from the “Battles” of previous games into “Castle Sieges” that occur in the area around each castle. In an always changing environment, use devious planning and military might to enjoy this new style of battle where the biggest question is “What’s the best way to take this castle?”
In Politics, the choices of and the interactions between officers will determine the foundations of a force. Players are able to experience a variety of lifestyles, playing as Rulers, Generals, Unaffiliated officers, and more. Furthermore, officers’ interactions with other officers will help to strengthen the country they are a part of.

And What About The Ranking? Dynasty Warriors 9 VS The Others?
Well as we mentioned, the ranking is not done by us. To be perfectly guilt-free, we borrowed the ranking from Metacritic. So if you disagree with the official ranking of your favorite game, then take it up with them.
While the first Dynasty Warriors game does not have a Metascore, the other main eight games in the franchise range in quality. Due to an increase in fluid gameplay, repeatability, enhanced graphics, overall entertainment value, and more. Here we go. Are you ready?
Dynasty Warriors 7 – 58
This is the lowest-rated game in the franchise so far, according to Metacritic. Why? The website thinks its because of the boring repetition, undetectable upgrades, and tiresome fascination with the once-novel fighting game. But here’s the good thing about it. The film earned praise for its minor gameplay changes and introduction of the new weapons system.
Fun fact: Jr. Stephen Siu had contacted Koei Tecmo for three years about bringing the film to life before finally getting the green-light in 2016.
Dynasty Warriors 6 – 60
This installment varies greatly from past games in the series. Dynasty Warriors 6 marked a major gameplay shakeup with the inclusion of the Renbu system. A system that allows players a new way to fortify their attack combinations with a new power gauge that fills up on the completion of tasks. Dueling from Dynasty Warriors 4 returns, but has been revamped. And the two new ‘innovations’ to the series are the abilities to swim and climb ladders.
Fun fact: Tomohiko Sho is director and Kenji Tanigaki is the opening movie director.
Dynasty Warriors 9 – 65
The star of this article if you will. The praise for the game included its lush cinematic visuals, experimental ambition, and rich backstory of the Three Kingdoms. Following in the footsteps of Toukiden 2, this game is the first open world entry for the series. Players are able to explore the full scope of the battlefield and visit nearby cities or towns. Furthermore, the map has over ten unique cities where items and other services may be purchased. So, traveling from one side of China to the other side takes about three hours.
Fun fact: A Mandarin dub is available for the Chinese port, as well as all home console versions of the game.
Dynasty Warriors 8 – 68
Dynasty Warriors 8 introduced the new Ambition Mode of gameplay to the series. Which tasks players with erecting a tower for peasants to call home base by engaging in three types of battles. Furthermore, the story is based on the 14th-century Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and the game has 83 playable characters in total. Nice.
Fun fact: The game is hailed for it’s truly engaging and educational historical narrative.
Dynasty Warriors 5 – 69
So far, it’s the title with the greatest number of spin-offs. The game’s characters, visuals, and fighting style are also the most publicized versions to date. Dynasty Warriors 5 is based on the Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms by Luo Guanzhong. But the gameplay of Dynasty Warriors 5 is based on previous “Dynasty Warriors” games. It’s worth the try.
Fun fact: Kenji Tanigaki is the opening movie director.
Dynasty Warriors 2 – 75
This is the first entry to gain overwhelmingly positive reviews from critics. Dynasty Warriors 2 is also a fun-filled, hyper-kinetic, and wildly intense action extravaganza. Not to mention, this game was the first to introduce Free Mode and Musou Mode to the series. And of course, many of the stages are recreations of notable battles present historically or from the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms.
Fun fact: Being one of the first games released for the PlayStation 2, it was named Gamepro’s best game of the week.
Dynasty Warriors 3 – 78
It is the third in the Dynasty Warriors series in North America. And the second in the Shin Sangokumusou series in Japan. It is also a spin-off from the video game Romance of the Three Kingdoms. And based around a series of books by the same name, written by Luo Guanzhong. Dynasty Warriors 3 was the first in the series to introduce a two-player mode and numerous other improvements over Dynasty Warriors 2. New stages, characters, weapons, attacks and music are also introduced. A true classic indeed.
Fun fact: The game’s Chinese version is narrated by Liu Mingxun.
Dynasty Warriors 4 – 78
Here’s a cool fact. When it was released, it sold over one million copies within nine days. Dynasty Warriors 4 expands on its predecessors by adding new characters, new modes of play. And a completely new ‘Edit Mode.
Fun fact: In the opening cutscene for Shu’s Musou Mode for Act 1, Liu Bei is erroneously rendered wielding Cao Cao’s 7-to-9/3rd weapon as opposed to any of his own.
