Murder Mystery Series

And What Are The Murder Mystery Series We Mentioned?

While admittedly most of them are a bit fresher, there’s a nice balance in them. Some have a more whimsical side to them while others are more serious. However, all of them have either the murder theme, the mystery theme. Or even both of these together. Oh and don’t let me forget. Veronica Mars is included on this list. And although the series had a revival series (backed by Kickstarter), I’m going to focus on the original TV series in this article. So, with that in mind… Let’s begin, shall we?

Mare of Easttown

Mare of Easttown is technically a mini-series, but at the same time, it has one of the best performances from Kate Winslet on the small screen. But then again, it’s Kate. Would you expect anything less than her? Yes. Kate is astounding in Mare of Easttown, but this is a fantastic TV series as well. It’s meticulous, nail-biting with a murder and a mysterious disappearance in the center of the story. Furthermore, Kate plays the titular character (she’s Mare, the detective sergeant in Easttown), and the show has a slow build-up of events. Julianne Nicholson, Jean Smart, Angourie Rice, Evan Peters and Guy Pearce are in supporting roles. But it’s Kate’s performance is that you’ll remember long after. It’s worth the shot.

Fun fact: Audience viewership increased weekly, due to such positive word-of-mouth. On the evening of the finale, on May 30, 2021, the HBO Max streaming server crashed for several hours, mere minutes from the episode airing.

The Flight Attendant

A murder mystery drama series with a comedic twist? That’s The Flight Attendant all right. However, the TV series also marks the return of Kaley Cuoco to the small screen. And in The Flight Attendant, she’s Cassie Bowden. An alcoholic and reckless flight attendant who’ll wake up with a dead body beside her. She’s not able to piece the events leading up to the murder, but the investigation about it might. Michiel Huisman, Rosie Peres, T.R. Knight and Zosia Mammet are in supporting roles here. But yeah. The series is addictive and worth indulging, and it’s already renewed for a second season. Success.

Fun fact: The premium cabin seats on Imperial Atlantic are actually British Airways Club World seats.

Veronica Mars

Oh, Veronica Mars. Who’d knew that noir would go beautifully with a high school setting? But yeah. Kristen Bell is Veronica Mars. A high school student (at the start of the series) that moonlights as a private investigator. So, she solves complex cases and unsolved mysteries, although harbors secrets of her own. As I mentioned earlier, the series had a revival season and a standalone movie too. But aside from Bell, Enrico Colantoni is stellar as well as Keith Mars, and I can’t recommend this TV series enough. It’s worth the binge.

Fun fact: Paul Rudd was originally considered to play Vinnie Van Lowe.

Psych

This statement may come as a shock with the fans of Psych, but I’ve never even heard of the series until a couple of years ago. My husband (hi Martin) is a huge fan of Psych and he introduced me to the series. And yes, I became one as well. It’s sooooo good. And believe it or not, Psych is the only series on this list to have more than 4 seasons.

In fact, it has 8, and two movies as well. Well, the third one has been announced so rejoice Psych fans. However, what I love about Psych is the repartee (and quite frankly the friendship) between Shawn (James Roday Rodriguez) and Gus (Dule Hill). Their chemistry is off the charts between these two, and the humor is just hilarious. But yeah. Shawn and Gus are partners in crime-solving, and they help out with investigations at the Santa Barbara PD. With the help of Shawn’s „special abilities“ of course. Psych is good and it’s a must-watch.

Fun fact: Shawn likes to tell people that Gus played Bud on The Cosby Show (1984). Dulé Hill (Gus) guest-starred on “Cosby” once.

Twin Peaks

Twin Peaks has everything. Mystery, murder, horror and drama. Oh and lots of weirdness. David Lynch blends everything together in a murder mystery series that spans decades. We still don’t know the future of Twin Peaks, but in the three decades since the premiere, it turned out to be one of the most confusing, but quality series ever. With a cast that’s been a staple in David Lynch’s career (most notably Kyle MacLachlan). And some clever yet confusing writing… Twin Peaks is definitely an acquired taste. Well, at least it’s for me since I’m not a huge fan of David Lynch in general. However, it does fit the criteria points for our Murder Mystery Sale and I have to include it. I’d love to know if you are a fan of Twin Peaks. Let me know in the comment section.

Fun fact: Miguel Ferrer was cast as FBI Agent Rosenfeld after David Lynch saw him as Bob Morton in RoboCop (1987).

Sharp Objects

Last but certainly not least. Sharp Objects also qualifies for this list, as it has both murder and mystery in it. And much like Mare of Easttown, it’s also a mini-series. However what I love about Sharp Objects is the dark atmosphere, the southern charm and the performances from Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson. But Sharp Objects centers around Camille Preaker (Adams). An alcoholic reporter who’s sent on an assignment to her hometown to investigate a murder of two young girls. What she’ll find out will surprise her the most. Chris Messina is also amazing in the series, and so is Elizabeth Perkins. This is a much darker series, but it’s a must if you’re a fan of Amy Adams.

Fun fact: Amy Adams and Chris Messina previously starred together in Julie & Julia (2009), where they played husband and wife.
