Golf With Friends

I touched on the theme of Golf in the previous posts. But Golf With Your Friends inspired me to give the sport another try. And I already mentioned some of the great golf movies that I adore to this very day. But as I tackle another game that’s available here at IndieGala, I must mention some more great golf movies. Indeed there are plenty of interesting, fun and exciting golf movies worth mentioning. Some of them are biopics, some of them are dramas. But they all have one thing in common. Golf.

Since I already wrote about wrestling, racing and tennis, I figured that golf is another great next topic for me. But instead of focusing on the opinion regarding the sport, I think it’s best to look back at the sport’s origins. The history of golf and the progression of the sport through time.

As previously mentioned, we do have But Golf With Friends currently on sale here at IndieGala. But before I dive into the game itself, I feel that I own the sport itself some backstory.

Golf With Friends

Golf With Your Friends, sure, but what’s golf anyway?

Well, the definition of the sport states that it’s a club-and-ball sport. In it, the players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. It’s and outdoors sport, and the players have no physical contact with the other players. Unlike in wrestling or basketball for instance. And the first modern game of golf can be traced to 15th century Scotland. It was at the Old Course at St. Andrews University, but the oldest golf tournament in existence is The Open Championship (or The British Open). As small trivia about this sport… If were to be held, the 2020 Summer Olympics would have included golf too (as they did in 2016 Rio Summer Olympics). Cool right? OK, back to the game.

But what’s Golf With Your Friends all about?

Developed by Blacklight and published by Team17, But Golf With Friends is a fun golf-themed game. It’s also cross-platform multiplayer, single-player and multiplayer golf game. The Golf With Your Friends game currently has 7 levels containing 18 holes each. And at the same time, the game can support up to 12 players. Some of the additional key features of Golf With Friends include level editor, ball customization, game modes, player rate servers and modifiers. Such as low gravity and weird ball shapes, which just add to the fun. Not to mention the powerups! If you choose so, you can put a wedge between your friends by trapping their ball in honey. Or by freezing it or turning it into a square. Cool right?

Golf With Friends

But back to the topic at hand. The movies that have golf in their plot of course. While I mentioned 5 great movies in the previous post, I feel that 5 more are necessary.

Tommy’s Honour

A golfing historical drama that’s directed by Jason Connery (Sean Connery’s son). It’s actually a great movie about the lives, careers of, and the relationship between, Tom Morris Sr. and his son Tom Morris Jr. The 19th century pioneering Scottish golfing champions. Peter Mullan plays the older Morris, while Jack Lowden plays the younger Morris. Sam Neill has a supporting role and it’s actually a really good biopic drama. It’s worth giving it a shot.

Dead Solid Perfect

It’s basically a TV movie from the ’80s but I feel that it deserves a lot more love. Randy Quaid is in the lead role here, and it’s a movie from his prime. Do you remember how awesome of an actor Randy Quaid was before he became Alex Jones? He plays Kenny Lee in this movie. A talented but underachieving pro golfer trying to break through on the tour, but learns other lessons along the way. The wonderful Jack Warden is in supporting role, and it’s one of those forgotten movies that I always look back to.

The Legend of Bagger Vance

20 years after the premiere of The Legend of Bagger Vance I still don’t understand why this movie flopped at the box office. It’s a good movie. Is it an Oscar worthy piece of cinema? No, but it’s solid. It has an incredible cast (Matt Damon, Will Smith, Charlize Theron and the great Jack Lemmon as the narrator). In fact, this is Jack’s movie before his death, and I’m happy to report that even the great Roger Ebert liked it. He gave the movie  3½ stars in his review. And although the film is based on fiction (1995 novel of the same name), both Bobby Jones and Walter Hagen (some of golfers mentioned here) were real-life golfers. It’s a really decent movie.

Robert Redford

Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius

And speaking of real-life golfer. Four years after The Legend of Bagger Vance, the fans got their Bobby Jones biopic. Jim Caviezel plays the legendary golfer Bobby Jones. The movie explores Jones’s life and career until his retirement at the tender age of 28. It also captures the spirit of the world in the ’20s and 30’s beautifully. But aside from Caviezel, there are plenty of great supporting actors in the cast. Namely Aidan Quinn, Claire Forlani, Jeremy Northam and Malcolm McDowell. Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius was a commercial and financial flop but I think it deserves a mention here.

From the Rough

And last but not least… A golf movie about a female coach. That’s right. Taraji P. Henson stars in this drama inspired by Catana Starks. She’s a former swim coach, who became the first woman ever to coach a college men’s golf team. Tom Felton is also in the movie and so is the late Michael Clark Dunkan. In fact, this movie is dedicated to Duncan who died 2 years before the release of the movie. It’s actually a fantastic movie with fantastic performances. I highly recommend it.
