Far Cry 6

Fans of Far Cry rejoice. Ubisoft just announced Far Cry 6, the sixth installment of the cult Far Cry series. Far Cry 6 is to be released on February 18, 2021, and there’s even a brand new trailer to confirm it. As one could expect from the Ubisoft’s successful franchise, the trailer is awesome, but the main star is even more so. I’m talking about the lovely and talented Giancarlo Esposito.

From Payday 2 to Far Cry 6

However, this is not Mr. Esposito’s first participation in such game development. He already voiced and portrayed “The Dentist” in the video game Payday 2. He played a middleman for several wealthy clients in Payday 2, but the role in Far Cry 6 is going to be a completely “different beast“.

And speaking of Ubisoft, stay tuned for great Ubisoft content here at IndieGala. We’re have a fantastic Ubisoft sale, so be sure not to miss out on great offerings. But more on that later. Right now I feel that it’s my imperative action to mention the game itself.

Far Cry 6: What do we know about the game?

If you take a good look at the comment section of the Far Cry 6 trailer, you’ll notice most of the comments deviate toward Better Call Saul/Breaking Bad and of course Tropico. It’s because of the ruthless dictator thing, i’m sure. Now, I already wrote a post on Tropico, so be sure to check out the post.

But what do we know about the game? Well, much like the previous installments, Far Cry 6 is an action-adventure first-person shooter game. Also, it takes place in a fictional Caribbean country called Yara. It’s described as a tropical paradise that’s been frozen in time, and by all accounts, it’s very similar to Cuba. Yara is ruled by “El Presidente” Anton Costillo (played by Giancarlo Esposito). He’s a ruthless dictator and a violent leader. El Presidente has full control over the island and rules it with an iron fist, promising a return to its former glory. Not to mention he’s also guiding his son Diego (Anthony Gonzalez) to follow in his footsteps, but as the trailer suggests civil unrest and mayhem will begin to unravel.

But you won’t be playing as El Presidente. Oh, no. You’ll be playing as Danny Rojas. A type of a guerrilla fighter.  Danny is playable as a female or male character, and you will help stoke the fires of the impending revolution. How? Certainly, through guerrilla warfare. You’ll use a powerful array of weapons and vehicles, and build a network of allies to fight alongside you. It’s your mission to prevent the handout of power.

Far Cry 6: It’s not easy playing a good baddie, now is it?

Ubisoft says players will have many weapons at their disposal and a companion system that allows you to recruit numerous allies to fight alongside you, like in Far Cry 5. But speaking about his character, the actor said: “He’s in the middle of, unfortunately, a revolution. He’s trying to empower the people to understand that they need strong leadership now,” Esposito tells Variety. Additionally, Esposito described his character as a leader “trying to empower the people to understand that they need strong leadership now”. And of course, you can clearly see the similarities of Anton Costillo with some of the Giancarlo Esposito’s most famous characters. Most notably with the one and only Gus Fring. The ruthlessness of his nature and the accent of course are there of course, but i’m sure Esposito will find a way to make this character memorable as well. Which brings me to…

The very best from Giancarlo Esposito

Who exactly is Mr. Esposito? Well, most of the contemporary fans know him as the calculating and vicious drug distributor Gus Fring in two iconic TV shows. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. He’s a polite and approachable individual who maintains a positive wholesome image in public while being a top drug kingpin. However, did you know that Gus Fring was actually named after the former German International Torsten Frings? Indeed he was. But the man behind the character started his career at the tender age of 8. That’s right. Esposito had his Broadway debut in the short-lived musical Maggie Flynn when he was a child. And although he appeared in many successful movies in the early ’80s (most notably Taps, King of New York, Trading Places) he got his break in 1988.

Gus Fring

Versatile career and incredible talent

That’s when he appeared in Spike Lee’s School Daze, and he followed the collaboration with Lee on several additional movies. Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X. All throughout the 80’s and 90’s Esposito perfected his craft in playing authority figures and especially devious villainous characters. Which brings me to his most recent TV career choices. Aside from appearing in probably one of the best TV shows in the past few decades (Breaking Bad), he’s also part of the spin-off Better Call Saul. Another incredible TV show. Also, he serves as the narrator of Dear White People and most recently played Moff Gideon in the hit TV series The Mandalorian. Check that one as well.

But, I suppose that he’s the most recognizable by the role of Gus Fring. Furthermore, he reached that status even without appearing in most of the episodes of Breaking Bad. Indeed, he’s been of just 24 episodes in total, but he’s incredible in every single one of them. He was introduced as a recurring character in the second season. But he managed to make that role his own and to expand it in the prequel Better Call Saul. But what’s so fascinating about this character you might ask?

How cunning, calculating smart and vicious Gus can be, while at the same time maintaining this calm professional facade. Above all, he’s a successful manager of a fast-food chain. He won’t even think twice about eliminating his rivals and threats while mingling and befriending special agents. Gus is without a doubt a mastermind, and he’s fascinating to watch. And yes. You can attribute that to the good writing, but his performance is nothing short from spectacular.

What’s next for Esposito?

Well, this particular year, you’ll be seeing Giancarlo Esposito in Disney’s film adaptation of Stargirl. But if you’re looking for a good movie with fantastic performances please check out the 2019’s Coda. Esposito plays Patrick Stewart’s agent in the drama, and he’s incredible as well. He’s also part of James Franco’s indie drama The Long Home, and he’ll be appearing in the DuckTales revival alongside David Tennant, Danny Pudi and Ben Schwartz. Can’t wait for that one to be honest.
