eFootball PES 2020

I have my dad to thank for turning me into the football fan I am today. But games like eFootball Pes 2020 really helped in easing the pain on not having football matches during the past few months. The world was in a long lockdown and eFootball PES 2020 became a comfort for many football fans. I know I am one of those fans as well.

But sport-themed posts are getting more and more frequent on my agenda here at IndieGala. Basketball, tennis, wrestling and now football. I’m not complaining though. I loved writing about sports and sports movies.

Also, we do have eFootball PES 2020 as part of our IndieGala summer sale. But if eFootball PES 2020 isn’t up your alley, we also have eFootball PES 2020 Legend Edition. You can pick and choose your favorite form of entertainment.

eFootball PES 2020: Lockdown entertainment for the football fans

Games like eFootball PES 2020: proved to be a great part-time entertainment and a decent substitute for the real deal. And I know that nothing can make up for watching a real-life game, but sometimes games will just have to do the trick. In times of a deadly global pandemic of course.

And you know what else could do the job in a pinch? Watching football-themed movies as well. There are plenty of those as well. Some are good, some are decent and some are appallingly bad. But, being the eternal optimist, I’m going to select nothing but the best for you.

Also, let me do a quick disclaimer here. While there are plenty of fantastic documentaries about football, I’m going to focus on feature-length movies. Because of that, I’m purposely going to omit movies like The Class of 92, and Diego Maradona. And instead, I’m going to focus on feature-length movies alone.

But first and foremost, a word or two about the game itself is very much needed. Just to give you a hint on what you’re getting yourself into with eFootball PES 2020.

eFootball PES 2020: What’s the game all about?

Developed by Konami Digital Entertainment and published by Konami, eFootball PES 2020 is a football simulation game. And besides the change in the title (and adding the eFootball within the title), there’s a return of a familiar face on the cover. Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. Furthermore, eighteen leagues in total are fully licensed in the game. All the teams in these leagues feature real players, kits and logos as well.

Among the novelties in the game, there’s also the new game mode called Matchday Mode. Which means players around the world will help their team to glory. One match at a time in the new Matchday mode of course. The game can be played in single-player or multi-player. So, it’s up to you to give it a shot.

That being said, which are the movies you should give a shot as well? Here are some of my picks. I hope you like them.

Bend It Like Beckham

The movie is almost 20 years old, but it’s still fun, sweet and hilarious as ever. Jess and Jules instantly became poster-children for every tomboy out there. And frankly, it’s one of those nostalgic movies that I still enjoy watching even now. And it didn’t hurt that it had Jonathan Rhys Meyers in the cast as well. Sure the movie elevated Keira Knightly to the A-list stars of Hollywood, but it also signaled that it’s OK for girls to play football. However, I still laugh to this day at the sports bra scene between Jules and her mom. I had the same conversation with my mom as well (on more than one occasion I might add) and it hit way too close to home. Bless her, she wanted so much for me to become a lady. Instead, I became the son my father never had.

The Damned United

The Damned United was Tom Hooper’s second movie and although it was a commercial flop, it still is to this day one of the best movies in his career. And the man made The King’s Speech and Les Miserables after this one. Sure he also made Cats but let’s not get crass here. But the reason I watched this movie was Michael Sheen. I just adore him and I think he was perfect in the role of Brian Clough. It’s largely fictionalized movie about Clough’s 44-day tenure as Leeds United manager and it’s fantastic. I highly recommend this movie.

Damned United

Fever Pitch

Fever Pitch is one of my all-time favorites. But don’t get this movie mixed up with the American baseball version of the movie. No, I’m talking about the 1997 version, starring Colin Firth. It’s glorious, and I’m not even an Arsenal fan. It’s a funny, touching and fantastic movie about one fan’s devotion to his team. Based on Nick Hornby’s book (Fever Pitch: A Fan’s Life ) and it’s a fictionalized version of Arsenal’s winning season 88/89. Aside from Colin in the lead role, there’s also the fabulous Mark Strong in supporting role and I just love this movie because of those two.

Goal!

Let’s talk about guilty pleasures! With exclamation mark in the title. How can I explain the feeling when watching this movie? It is a movie that you can expect from an American production team, but surprisingly it was made almost entirely by British people. The movie is very formulaic, very by the numbers and yet it’s oddly entertaining. Hey, even the great Roger Ebert liked it.

“I was surprised, then, to find myself enjoying the movie almost from the beginning.” Ebert said in his written review.

And in layman’s terms it’s basically Rocky, but with football in the middle of the story. Goal! is an immigrant’s story to football success, and it’s one of my guilty pleasures.

Goal

Green Street Hooligans

I thought I should end this post with a very different movie. A movie that’s directed by a woman, and a movie that has football hooligans as the main theme. And It also has Elijah Wood and Charlie Hunnam in the lead roles. Elijah Wood after a string of successful movies. Lord Of The Rings, Sin City and Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind. Yeah, he followed all of them with an indie about British hooligans called Green Street Hooligans. Oh and Charlie’s Cockney accent is hilarious, but the movie is solid all in all.
