Darkside Detective

I’ve had plenty of opportunities to discuss the supernatural here at IndieGala. But Darkside Detective is not one of them, I must admit. However, one of my favorite articles to write so far was the exploration of HP Lovecraft’s influence on modern-day literature, art and video games. His mythos, his style and his themes are ever so slightly present in almost every aspect of our lives. You can check it out once again here. But I’m here about Darkside Detective. A fantastic game of course, but the game comes with an even more impressive list of movies. First things first.

Darkside Detective

Darkside Detective: What’s It All About?

Developed by Spooky Doorway and published by Akupara games, it’s an exciting and fun click-and-point adventure video game. But in essence, it’s a game set in the fictional city of Twin Lakes. A metropolis that’s known for its occasional reports of criminal activity. Although several of them are discovered to be of a supernatural nature. As the city is linked to an outwardly, ghost world reflection of itself known as the ‘Darkside’.

Where cultists crawl, where demons dwell, where the occult… occults? Indeed. That’s where you’ll find Detective Francis McQueen. The lead investigator of the criminally underfunded Darkside Division. When evil darkens the doorsteps of Twin Lakes City… Hell, even when it just loiters around shop fronts or hangs out in shady alleyways. Yes, he’s there, ready to investigate the cases that nobody else will. He is The Darkside Detective.

And What Are Some of The Steam User comments Saying About Darkside Detective?

*Well made and beautiful. The characters are immersive and the puzzles are original and well thought out. Definitely a worthwhile journey for point-and-click adventure fans! Says Schattenjager X.

* While yourenotsupposedtobeinhere adds: Awesome game with an awesome soundtrack. Would totally buy Darkside Detective 2 or any other installment! (Please make more games like this!) Love all the occult references too!

And yes. Of course, we have Darkside Detective, available for purchase here at IndieGala. We also have the sequel The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark as well. But that’s not all, the sequel is concurrency on sale, and presents a perfect opportunity for you to enjoy it. Check it out here. If you’re a fan of the series of course. However, if you’re not into the Darkside Detective, then you should definitely check out Kathy Rain. A fantastic adventure game with a similar premise. Visit the game here. You’ll enjoy it for sure.

But Which Movies Go Well With Darkside Detective?

Angel Heart

Probably one of my favorite, not just Mickey Rourke movie. But one of my favorite Robert DeNiro movies as well. It’s soo good, but over the course of years since the premiere… I feel it’s a very underrated movie. It has pitch-perfect performances, fine script (yes it’s rather good) and it’s set in one of my favorite cities. New Orleans. Plus DeNiro is Satan here, so it’s another reason to watch it. But in the center of the movie is an investigation. Rourke’s character is a private investigator in Angel Heart and it hired to track down a singer by the name of Johnny Favorite. The investigation will take him into very unknown territory, and he will not be the same ever again.

Fun fact: Alan Parker offered the role of Harry Angel to Al Pacino, Jack Nicholson, and Robert De Niro.

Constantine

I believe I mentioned Constantine in several of my previous articles. Most notably in my Keanu Reeves article, and I also believe I mentioned the upcoming sequel too. Constantine fans rejoice, the sequel is currently in production. Yeah. But yeah, I’d gladly put Constantine in my top 5 Keanu movies. And in Constantine, Keanu is the titular character. A chain-smoking occult detective who’s counting his days on Earth. He’s got a terminal cancer diagnosis, but plenty of demons to kill until his time is up. And he’s not too shy about it. Constantine is fantastic with a great cast, a movie that I had to defend all of these years. It also fits perfectly here, so yeah. I recommend Constantine.

Fun fact: Keanu Reeves bought the Holy Shotgun prop, and gave it to director Francis Lawrence as a gift.

R.I.P.D.: Rest in Peace Department

Here’s a silly movie for your enjoyment. Yes, I know it’s not that good of a movie, but it’s got its charm. Not to mention it has one hell of a cast. Starting with Ryan Reynolds. He’s Nick Walker. A detective sergeant who gets shot and then transferred to the R.I.P.D.: Rest in Peace Department. He’ll get a new partner (Jeff Bridges enjoying himself a bit too much here), and new assignments. Catching undead criminals, and finding his killer. Kevin Bacon is in it, and Mary Louise Parker, whom I adore. And yeah. It’s another fit for this list.

Fun fact: Ryan Reynolds has appeared in six films adapted from comic books. The other five films are Blade: Trinity (2004), X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009), Green Lantern (2011), Deadpool (2016) (Deadpool), and Deadpool 2 (2018).

Cast a Deadly Spell

This is a TV movie, but don’t let that deter you from watching it. And it has a mix of everything. Magic, mysticism, investigation and a nice noir feeling in the middle of it. However, Fred Ward is Det. Harry Philip Lovecraft in this movie. A hard-boiled private detective who is probably the only one who refuses to use magic. It’s because of personal reasons, but he’ll end to find the stolen book by the name of Necronomicon. This will be no easy job for sure, but he’s got some aces up his sleeve. Honestly, this is a great movie with great actors. Hey, even Julianne More is in it too. So, yeah. This was one of my 90’s favorites and yes. Deserves to be on this list.

Fun fact: The whole plot and many of the monsters are taken from the works of H.P. Lovecraft. That’s why Fred Ward’s character has his name too.

Dylan Dog: Dead of Night

Again, not the best movie on this list. But I’m such a fan of Dylan Dog, Brandon Routh, and New Orleans… So I had to include it. Oh, and Peter Stormare is in it as well. But yeah, Routh is Dylan Dog. A supernatural private investigator. And the movie of course follows his adventures to find some scary supernatural/undead monsters in Louisiana. Yes, this is not the best movie on this list I agree but it does have some charm in it. However, if you’re a fan of the comic books, then you should probably watch Dellamorte Dellamore too. Or rather instead. It’s sooo much better option. You’re welcome.

Fun fact: One of the sleeper vampire’s name is Sclavi. Tiziano Sclavi is the author of Dylan Dog comic book.
