Void Bastards

Look, writing about outsiders, misfits and downright criminals is nothing new for me. Void Bastards continues that trend of course, but I have written about everything and everyone. Hey, I can’t even count the times I’ve written about Prison Architect. You’re more than welcomed to revisit some of those articles, BTW. Here is my favorite. But this particular Void Bastards post is rather different. First of all the game takes place on Sargasso Nebula. And secondly, there’s a different type of misfits here. But first things first.

Before I could go on with this post, I believe that a word or two about the game is in order.

Void Bastards

What’s Void Bastards All About?

Developed by Blue Manchu and published by Humble Games, Void Bastards is a science-fiction first-person shooter and roguelike video game. But the game revolves around surviving in the dangerous Sargasso Nebula. By boarding and salvaging materials from spaceships. However, you get to play Void Bastards as one of many rehydrated prisoners aboard a stranded personnel vessel. Furthermore the AI there must rely on its dangerous cargo to obtain fuel for a final jump to its destination. Can you lead the misfit prisoners through the derelict spaceships and dangers of the Sargasso Nebula?

Fun fact about the game! Cult classics like BioShock and System Shock 2 are the main inspirations behind it. And yeah. The game will definitely test your wits and exercise your aim.

But what are some of the Steam comments about Void Bastards?

-I adore the art style of this game. It is like blending of Prey + Bioshock + XIII. Says Vartacca in his comment.

-While Pilgrim adds: Playing this game is like playing FTL but from a first-person perspective. This is a really great game. It has good humor and a wide variety of situations. The last third of the game on normal difficulty gets too easy. Later I will try to replay it on hard.

Oh, and if you’d like to check it out, you can do it now. Just click here and enjoy Void Bastards. You’re welcome.

Void Bastards And A Fine Selection Of Misfits

That’s right. We’ve got a fine selection of misfits that go along with the game beautifully. And yeah. It’s a mixed bag of TV and movie misfits, so yeah. We hope you’ll enjoy them. And perhaps you can tell us your favorites to add to this list. We can’t wait to know all about them. So, let’s begin, shall we?

Space Truckers

Space Truckers is truly a blast from the past. Well, from the mid-’90s and it has a fantastic cast. From Steven Dorff in the lead role to Dennis Hopper, Debi Mazar and Charles Dance in supporting ones. But Dorff is John Canyon. One of the last independent space transport entrepreneurs in space. He’s in a not so enviable situation and forced to carry suspicious cargo to Earth without asking questions. However, his last transport will prove to be a difficult one and will put him in an even bigger pickle. Space Truckers was a commercial and critical flop, but I think it fits here on this list. There are space pirates here, robots and cool characters. It’s worth the watch.

Fun fact: Loaded described the film as “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977) meets Predator (1987) meets Hook (1991).”

Lockout

Yeah, I know Lockout may seem like a weird choice here, but hear me out. It does involve misfits, criminals and all-around bad guys. And it does take place in Space. Well in an orbital prison that is under siege. Indeed, there’s a mutiny there, and an Ex-CIA ops guy (Guy Pierce) needs to rescue the president’s daughter from the riot chaos. In exchange for his freedom of course. Things will not go smoothly, but hey. It’s a basis for solid entertainment. And if the premise seems too familiar (Escape From New York for instance), then you are correct. John Carpenter even sued the filmmakers in court and won. So, a less of this story is don’t mess with any of Carpenter’s intellectual properties.

Fun fact: The main antagonist brothers are named Alex and Hydell. Alek Hidell was an alias used by Lee Harvey Oswald.

Guardians of the Galaxy

Oh, those lovable misfits. Look, I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again. I knew that Guardians Of The Galaxy is going to be special after the first 10 minutes of runtime. Indeed. Right after I saw Chris Prat dancing all by himself in that cage, I knew that this is a good movie. Sometimes you just know right away, you know what I mean? But yeah. Guardians of the Galaxy has a bunch of fun, eclectic misfits. Some human-like and some raccoon-like. But they’re all great and fun. However, in technical terms, the Guardians Of The Galaxy are extraterrestrial criminals. And they’re on the run for the majority of the film. Which makes the movie all that interesting to watch. But yeah, so worth having on this list.

Fun fact: Bradley Cooper told Howard Stern that he was paid more for voicing Rocket in this movie than for starring in Silver Linings Playbook (2012) and The Hangover (2009) combined.

Fortress

This is by far the oldest movie on this list. But make no mistakes. It fits right in. However, we do have a different set of misfits in Fortress. A married couple who broke the rules. They chose to have another child, and with the strict one-child policy they’re banished to The Fortress. An underground dystopian prison for criminals like them. They’ll try to escape but that won’t be so easy that’s for sure. Christopher Lambert and Loryn Locklin are in the lead roles, and yeah. It’s worth your time.

Fun fact: The film takes place in 2017.

Farscape

Let’s end this post with another bunch of misfits. And from space too. Farscape is something of a favorite of mine, despite discovering it during my last year’s lockdown. But Farscape is about a group of misfits from all the corners of the galaxy. And one human as well. The Earth-born astronaut John Crichton that somehow ended up on the Moya at the very start of the show. But what is Moya you might ask?. A living spaceship populated by exiles, fugitives and crooked aliens. Going home will soon become their new mission, but the journey home will not be easy. Oh, how I love this show. And everything about it. The costumes, the set designs, and make-up too. Not to mention it has incredible writing, rich characters, and strong plot development. Ugh. It’s soooo good and I highly recommend it.

Fun fact: James Gunn was asked on Twitter in 2016 if he had ever seen Farscape (1999), as it had some similarities in terms of character. He replied that of all television shows, Farscape was the one that influenced Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) the most.
