Tyranny: a fantastic RPG

Tyranny is an extraordinary RPG produced by the well-known software house Obsidian Entertainment and published by Paradox Interactive. That’s right, if you’re a dedicated gamer, it should tell you the value of the game.

Personally, I have to tell you that I am the type of person who isn’t a big fan of this kind of games, but Tyranny has conquered me from the very first moment. Why? Well, you’ll find out by reading my review about it!

Tyranny: Don’t be bad, just be evil

Hey, in Tyranny you have to be bad!

What fascinated me about Tyranny was its premise. You are in a world where evil has beaten good. Heroes are hopeless and those who show positive qualities are wiped out.

No, you’re not in the real world, you’re in a very diverse magical realm. Regardless, you will not be the main villain, but his henchman, ready to perform the most bloody tasks and executions. You serve Kyros, your lord, and you must help him conquer the last free land on Terratus.

Simply put, you can be mean and be fascinated by the “dark side” without paying any real consequences…is there anything better?

The importance of choices and “Ethics”

The world of Tyranny

As mentioned above, the player aims to conquer the last bulwark of hope present in Terratus. In this place, a small revolution has arisen and two factions, Disfavored and Scarlet Chorus, are in disagreement on how to resolve the issue.

You will decide which faction to support and how to carry out the operations. Regardless, you don’t have to think you’re in any modern RPG action, just like Dark Souls. In this game, you will have to choose carefully, because once you have taken a path you will never go back. Your reputation will be marked forever.

However, no choice will seem wrong to you although personally, it made me even more invested in the game. For example, even pushing guards can make you gain favor with a faction…or make you completely hate it.

In Tyranny you can't be a kind character

There is no time for remorse, you have to impersonate a cruel henchman and your goal is to oppress freedom. In Tyranny there is no redemption, nor forgiveness….right?

At some point in the story, which may vary depending on your decisions, you can choose to take over the reins of the game. Of course, you can’t subvert reality, you’re always in a cruel world. However, you can choose to follow your ambitions and become a less evil, more rational and “fair” tyrant.

Following your “ethics“, who knows, maybe you can rekindle hope in the people. Tyranny offers multiple possibilities and I loved this aspect. It is really hard to find something like that in the most popular games.

Character creation and game world

Character Creation

Another thing I appreciated in Tyranny is the fact that you can not choose a class, as in the common RPG. The character can be altered aesthetically, but as for skills and equipment, you have to do it on your own.

In addition to raising the level of challenge, you are invited to explore the vast game world. And believe me, if you don’t, then you’ll be wasting hours against the strongest enemies.

To level up, you have to accumulate experience and to do that you have to be patient. Tyranny is a game that rewards you if you can wait, perfect in this period of quarantine.

Remember that in the game you can also choose different companions that will follow you in your adventures. Thanks to the latter you can improve your fighting skills and maybe face the mysterious dungeons of the game.

I have to say that there are not many such areas, but they are all well structured. Perhaps developers could add more zones like these, with future expansions of the franchise or maybe even a sequel.

Are you ready to play Tyranny?

Ultimately, Tyranny is a complete and long-lived game. It’s able to enthuse fans of the genre RPG and beyond. Moreover, I advise you, just like To The Moon, to play this game with headphones, because it has an amazing soundtrack.
