The Golf Club

To be honest, I rarely have sport-inspired topics here at IndieGala. The Golf Club is just a handful of those. Yes, I’ve written about basketball, race car driving and most recently about WWE wrestling.

Golf is next on the agenda. However, I must mention that we do have The Golf Club™ 2019 Featuring PGA TOUR on sale here at IndieGala. And not only that. Golf With Your Friends is also one of our top sellers (and also on sale), but I feel that it deserves a separate post. For the sake of clarity and efficiency, I’m going to focus on The Golf Club here. I’ll leave Golf With Your Friends for another post. So stay tuned for that one!

For each of the two separate posts, I’ll be sharing my favorite golf movies (5 in each post) and I can’t wait to know yours. Feel free to comment in the comment section and share your personal favorites. We’d love to hear all about them.

The Golf Club

But back to the topic at hand. The Golf Club. The Golf Club™ 2019 Featuring PGA TOUR seems a bit long, so I’ll just use The Golf Club. But, before I go any further with this post, I’d like to mention a thing or two about the game itself.

The Golf Club: What’s the game all about?

Well, developed by HB Studios and published by 2K, The Golf Club is a simulation and strategy sports game. It’s also a sequel to the highly-rated The Golf Club 2. You get to be a golf pro thanks to this game and even play on some of the most famous courses in the world. Such as TPC Boston, TPC Sawgrass and so much more. And not only that you can also play on the best PGA TOUR events such. An event like the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, the John Deere Classic and the Waste Management Phoenix Open. The Golf Club allows you to explore the new PGA Tour Career mode. And you can design your courses as well, through the course designer mode. There’s the online multiplayer mode and the Online Societies mode.

The Golf Club: Why such a boring sport makes for great movies?

The notion that golf is a boring sport is shared by many. Not just me. I remember some years ago, there was a British poll in which Golf was named as one of the most boring sports possible. American football was put in the second place, while Cricket was in the top 3 according to the British public pool. And they invented two of these three sports! Golf, according to the Brits, is a joyless, slow and boring sport (and especially to the audience). But there’s no denying that golf movies are the opposite of that. Why is that?

The Golf Club

I’ve always wondered how much boring (yes, I’ll be using that word a lot here) can inspire such great movies. Of course, most of them are in the drama genre, but some excellent comedies are thrilling and exciting as well.

That being said. What are some of the best golf movies out there? As previously mentioned, I’ll be sharing half of my favorites here and half in the next posts about golf. Let’s begin, shall we?

Caddyshack (1980)

That was the famous Bill Murray quote from Caddyshack, and not only was Harrold Ramis’s directorial debut, but it’s also the movie that kinda started of the Ramis/Murray partnership. Yes, they did Metaballs a year prior, but Ramis wasn’t in the directorial chair on that one.

Also, can you believe that next month Caddyshack will be celebrating the 40th anniversary? It’s been 40 years since the release of this movie! And what a movie it is. It has Murray, Rodney Dangerfield and Chevy Chase in the cast. Incredible.

Happy Gilmore

Adam Sandler at his best. This 90’s gem is one of my particular childhood favorites, and it’s one of the movies I will never get bored of. After his hockey career goes down the drain, Happy Gilmore will find an unlikely talent. For golf. So, he’ll use that talent to win a golf tournament and save his grandma’s house. It’s a hilarious and sweet movie at the same time, with a great supporting cast. There’s also the late Richard Kiel, Adam’s SNL alum Kevin Nealon, and lots of sportspeople. Carl Weathers in this movie too, and so is Mark Lye.

Happy Gilmore

The Greatest Game Ever Played

Directed by the late Bill Paxton, The Greatest Game Ever Played is more of a biopic but at the same time is a great sports drama. It’s his last movie he directed before his death. Set in the early 20th century, The Greatest Game Ever Played is a biographical movie about Francis Ouimet, the first amateur to win the U.S. Open. Ouimet is played by Shia LaBeouf, but the supporting cast is impressive as well. Stephen Dillane, Peter Firth and Elias Koteas provide a great back-up.

Tin Cup

A romantic comedy and a golf sports movie all in one. That’s Tin Cup all right.

Do you remember how Adam Sandler had to win to save his grandma’s house in Happy Gilmore?? Well, over here Kevin Costner has to win, to get his rival’s girlfriend. And how good is Kevin Costner here? Incredible. And so is Rene Russo to be honest, but the supporting cast doesn’t disappoint either. There’s Don Johnson, Cheech Marin and Linda Hard too. And you might think that the underdog sports movies are a huge cliché, but this one is quite enjoyable and fun to watch.

Tin Cup

Pat And Mike

An oldie for the end of this list, but a fantastic romantic comedy as well. I can’t tell you how fantastic this movie is. You can clearly see the love and chemistry between Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. They’re just brilliant in Pat And Mike. And who are they in this movie? Well, Katharine is Pat. A brilliant athlete who loses confidence whenever her overbearing fiancée is near her. Mike (Spencer Tracy) is a sports promoter enlisted to help her and her confidence. They’ll find something more than confidence, let me tell you that. I highly recommend that you give this one a try. You’ll not regret it. I promise.
