Look. I don’t know about you, but we at IndieGala are pretty psyched about Scarlet Nexus. Indeed, the long-anticipated game is coming out this summer. And you can bet your behind that we have it with a pre-purchase status. Which you can check out by clicking here.

June is a long time ahead of us, but why not get you psyched as well? I mean, we’re counting down the weeks and days. So, why not explore the game, and the themes in it? Yeah, there are plenty of them but, e prevailing one is of course psychokinesis. Which is why we’re going to explore it even further. With a couple of fine examples of course, and we’re not talking solely about movies. Oh, no some iconic TV characters and movies will be included. However, before I can go on with this article, I believe a nice introduction to the game is very much needed.

Scarlet Nexus

Scarlet Nexus: What’s It All About?

Published and developed by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Scarlet Nexus is a third-person, action RPG set in a near future’s alternate reality. And in it, you get to play either as Yuito Sumeragi. Or Kasane Randall. Members of the Other Suppression Force (OSF) were tasked to defend New Himuka from creatures known as the Others. Sure they possess short-range weapons like a sword. But both of them possess the ability of psychokinesis. Yeah. Both of the characters can hurl objects and debris at hostile enemies. And their powers can be upgraded through accessing the “brain map”. Basically the game’s skill tree.

Oh, and Bandai Namco is really trying to get you hooked since is releasing an anime series adaptation. Much like the game itself, the TV anime will premiere in July as well. Told ya, there are plenty of reasons to get excited.

But What Goes Well With Scarlet Nexus?

Well, it’s a mixed bag here. We have a nice selection of movies and TV series that have characters with psychokinesis. Some are older picks, while others are fresh and rather new. But of course, all of them are iconic and easily recognizable. You know them I presume, and who knows? Maybe you’re fans of them as well. We sure are. Let’s begin, shall we?

Scanners

Ah, the David Cronenberg’s classic. And although the movie dates from the early 80’s no, it’s not the oldest pick on this list. Simply scroll down on this page to find out which is. But in essence, the movie is about… Scanners. A group of human mutants that can basically make people go mad. And finally, they can make their minds actually explode. There’s a scanner renegade, an evil private military company in the mix. And exploding heads. Not to mention very opposing sides on how to treat the scanners. However, this is a weird movie even for me. I finally got to watch it just recently, and yeah. I had a blast. But of course, the true maverick here is Michael Ironside, who basically steals the entire movie. He’s that good. But yeah. I highly recommend Scanners.

Fun fact: David Cronenberg once called this the most frustrating film he’d ever made.

The Fury

Nope. This is not the oldest movie on this list. I guess you’ll have to scroll some more. But yeah this is a fantastic movie with one of the weirdest cast and crew ever. First of all, it’s directed by Brian De Palma (the first out of the two on this list). Secondly, it has aging Kirk Douglas and John Cassavetes in the lead roles. And John Williams on music score duty. But Kirk is an ex-CIA agent who tries to save his kidnapped son from a notorious terrorist. His son possesses telekinetic/psychokinetic abilities, and that makes him an easy weapon. If he falls in the wrong hands of course. This is a great movie indeed. And much like Scanners, I got to watch it during our third national lock-down. But yeah. I highly recommend it.

Fun fact: The film debut for Daryl Hannah (portrays Pam), Laura Innes (portrays Jody), and Jim Belushi (uncredited).

Carrie

Yup. Brian De Palma again. And in case you were wondering this is the oldest movie on this list. There are lots of reboots and remakes, but the 1975 movie remains the best. To this very day. And as the title suggest, the movie is about Carrie. Shy, withdrawn high school girl who lives with her domineering, religious mother. She also possesses psychokinetic powers, and all of them she will showcase on that faithful prom night. However, Carrie’s success was a big deal back in the ’70s. Especially at the Oscars. Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie’s Oscar nominations were huge a surprise, for sure but they weren’t for nothing. They were amazing!

Fun fact: Betty Buckley was 28 at the time of filming. And only two years older than Sissy Spacek, and three years older than Nancy Allen and P.J. Soles, who play her students.

Matilda

We’re moving in the ’90s, and Matilda is next. Frankly, this is one of my favorite childhood movies, and I’m just glad I got to finally include it in one of my articles. Seriously, how warm, cuddly and just wonderful is Matilda? Mara Wilson is just adorable in the titular role, while the Hollywood couple Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman are funny as hell as Matilda’s evil/ignorant parents. This is a movie that I highly recommend for every child, but most importantly because I adore Mara Wilson. Yeah, to this very day, although she’s not acting anymore. Seriously, watch it if you haven’t. You’ll thank me later.

Fun fact: The scene where Bruce Bogtrotter is forced to eat chocolate cake took so long to film that the call sheet had an Infinity symbol written on the start and end times.

Chronicle

А found-footage superhero film is next on the list. That’s right, Chronicle is next. And Chronicle is about a trio of high school seniors from Seattle who gain telekinetic/ psychokinetic powers from an unknown object. After they experience a phenomenon, they’ll all inexplicably get superpowers, and yes. As you can probably tell, Carrie is cited as one of the influences of the movie. Dane DeHaan, Alex Russell, Michael B. Jordan star in the lead roles, while Josh Tank is the director behind the camera. It’s a good movie, and yeah deserves to be on this list.

Fun fact: The film has no original score. Only has sources such as radio and iPods to generate music.

Eleven From Stranger Things

Eleven is basically a lab experiment. But a damn adorable one, and since the first season of Stranger Things, one of the best characters that are ever created. Of course, the fact that she’s played by Millie Bobby Brown helps, but yeah. Since she escaped the lab she called home all of her life, she’ll befriend a group of boys from a small Indiana town. Oh, and a grumpy, grieving sheriff, who will grow to love her like she’s his daughter. Seriously, Eleven is one hell of a character, and I just had to include her on this list.

Fun fact: Chief Hopper’s (David Harbour) trailer reportedly only cost the art department $1 to buy.
