RE8 Gothic Horror is next on my agenda and I couldn’t be happier about that. Why? Well, because I’ll get to write about two of my favorite topics here. Resident Evil Village and gothic horror. Which is probably my all-time favorite sub-genre of horror.
But it’s not like I haven’t touched on the topic before. Or the game itself. Oh no. Just a few months ago, I wrote about Lady Dimitrscu. Lady Alcina Dimitrescu that is. The extremely tall vampire character from the game and I enjoyed every second of it. Check it out yet again here. You’re welcome.
RE8 Gothic Horror Movies: Same Game New Movies
Indeed. We’ve already introduced Resident Evil Village even before the premiere date. But now that it’s out, I think it’s good to do it yet again. However, not with a list of cool lady vampire characters. But with a bunch of cool gothic horror movies. Some of the movie picks on this list are a bit older, but some of them are a bit fresher. You should scroll down this article to find out which ones made the cut. However, I couldn’t simply go on with this article without mentioning the game itself. Resident Evil Village.
RE8 Gothic Horror And Resident Evil Village
What’s Resident Evil Village all about?
Developed and published by Capcom, RE8 is a survival horror game with intense first-person action and masterful storytelling. Set a few years after the horrifying events in the Resident Evil 7 biohazard, the all-new storyline begins with Ethan Winters and his wife Mia. They’re living peacefully in a new location, free from their past nightmares. And just as they are building their new life together, tragedy befalls them once again. The mysterious European village will become an integral part of their lives now, and what they’ll find there will shock them to the core.
However, compared to the modern RE7, the setting of RE8 has a clear gothic horror vibe. Classic gothic horror enemies like werewolves, merman and even ghosts may be encountered, a clear deviation from the slightly dried out common zombie theme.
But what are some of the Steam user comments about Resident Evil Village?
· This is an actual good game, I promise it’s not because the 9ft woman with a fat ass, says Rattle Snake Jake.
· While Vampirella adds: A perfect mix of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil 4. Loved all the lore it had and loved every single thing about it. Incredible game and truly a masterpiece. 10/10. Thank you, Capcom.

Crimson Peak
One of my favorite Guillermo Del Toro movies. And in my opinion one of his most underrated movies. But Crimson Peak is about the scary past of the Crimson Peak mansion. A beautiful but crumbling Gothic mansion, and the secrets it holds. When a young and naïve bride (played by Mia Wasikowska) comes to the house and meets the tenants there, she will find out what has happened there. Murders, and plenty of dark secrets. Tom Hiddleston plays Thomas Sharpe, the owner of the house, while Jessica Chastain plays his sister. This is a beautiful movie, with a fantastic costume design and even better-set design. Add to that the impeccable direction from Del Toro and the great performances from the trio of actors… And you’ve got yourself a true Gothic classic.
Fun fact: Everything in the house was made for the house. Nothing was reused from salvaged parts.
Dracula
I did pick the 1992 version of Dracula here since I adore that movie. But I’m a huge fan of the Hammer movies of the ’60s and ’70s too. But yeah. I picked the 1992 version since it’s one of the most faithful to the original material. And because it has Gary Oldman and Keanu Reeves in the cast. Although, I still stand to my point that Keanu is being miscast here in the role of Jonathan Harker. But yeah, this is one hell of a movie. And with fantastic direction from Francis Ford Coppola, it’s a true 90’s classic in my book.
Fun fact: Gary Oldman hired a singing coach to help him lower his voice by an octave to help him give Dracula a more sinister quality.
Interview With The Vampire
Another 90’s classic, and another movie filled with vampires. Heck, the vampire is in the title! But the title is also descriptive, the Neil Jordan’s movie is exactly about that. Daniel Molloy’s (Christian Slater) interview with Louis de Pointe du Lac (Brad Pitt). Tom Cruise is in the movie as well. And so are Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, Stephen Rea. But this is a fabulous movie that explores plenty of themes. Death, alienation, corruption of the mind and greed. And of course eternal existence.
Fun fact: Christian Slater was given the role of Malloy upon the death of River Phoenix, the original choice for the role. Slater donated his $250,000 salary to two of Phoenix’s favorite charities.
Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow is the last of the movies from the ’90s (well on this list anyway). But yeah. One of the most underrated as well. Johnny Dep has the lead role of Ichabod Crane in Tim Burton’s film. He’s a police constable dispatched to the upstate Dutch hamlet of Sleepy Hollow. In order to investigate a series of mysterious decapitations. What he’ll eventually discover will be much scarier there. Christina Ricci is in the movie as well, and so is the incredible Christopher Walken. Oh and my all-time favorite Dracula. Christopher Lee. This is a true gem from the ’90s and I just love the supernatural elements in it.
Fun fact: In real life, Casper Van Dien has relatives named Van Tassel, the name of a prominent family in the Sleepy Hollow story.
Suspiria
And why not end the list with probably the oldest movie on this list? Yes, I’m talking about the OG Dario Argento Suspiria movie, and not the 2018 remake. And although much of the fans consider it to be a slasher horror movie, it does contain Gothic elements too. And can be easily found on the best Gothic movies list. However, Suspiria is about the unexplained murders in a prestigious dance academy in Germany. So, when a student makes a transfer to the academy, she’ll soon discover a supernatural conspiracy too. Suspiria is one hell of a scary movie with incredible cinematography. I mean, the colors are fabulous in it. And if you haven’t seen it by now, do it!
Fun fact: Jessica Harper turned down a part in Annie Hall (1977) to star in this film.
