To be perfectly honest, the post about Port Royale 4 is the first of it’s kind for me. Well, at least from the Port Royale series. That’s not to say that I’ve never written about anything remotely similar. The fishing sim post was fun to do, and so was the Sid Meier Pirates post. Check that one out here. But Port Royale 4 blends so many great and exciting things together. Pirates, conquistadors, buccaneers, merchants all in one place.
Port Royale 4 Is An Innovative Game
For the first time in the series, naval battles are turn-based, with up to 8 ships battling at one time. And of course, tactical captain maneuvers that can turn the tide in even the most hopeless of situations for a glorious victory. Not to mention, the game allows you to take control of a colony as a young and ambitious governor who is eager to grow his small settlement into a bustling trader city.

Developed by Kalypso Media Digital and published by Kalypso Media UK Ltd, Port Royale 4 is a fantastic simulation/strategy game. The game allows you to join the 17th century colonial powers of Spain, England, France and the Netherlands in their fight for supremacy of the Caribbean. Furthermore, appoint a leader for your adventure from four different character classes. First an explorer, then a merchant, a buccaneer and of course a pirate. Each providing their own advantages and disadvantages, and on 18 historically authentic ship types from the late 16th and 17th centuries.

Well, there are plenty indeed, but for this particular project selected 4 different projects. They’re not only a mix of old and new Hollywood projects. But a movie and TV projects as well. Movies and TV shows that explore several aspects of the Port Royale 4 game. The settlers to the new world, the pirates, the merchants and the conquistadors. Mutiny on the Bounty
The oldest movie on this list, but one of the best nonetheless. What was a commercial flop in the ’60s is now regarded as one of the greatest epic movies of all time. Not to mention the movie was inspired by a real-life event. Indeed, Mutiny On The Bounty is a fictionalized story of the 1789 real-life mutiny led by Fletcher Christian against William Bligh. The captain of the HMAV Bounty that is.
Marlon Brando is in the role of Fletcher Christian, while Trevor Howard is in the role of William Bligh. And for those of you who don’t know Marlon Brando met the actress Tarita Teriipaia on the set of this movie. They would later marry and have 2 children. And as of 2020, she’s the only living ex-wife of the Hollywood legend.
Fun fact about the 2 times Oscar winner. Richard Harris agreed to take a third-billed role in this film purely to work with Marlon Brando. However, Brando’s on-set behavior soured his adoration of the star. Harris would later describe the production as “nightmarish” and “a total fucking disaster”.
Aguirre, the Wrath of God
Let’s start this paragraph with one of the most ludicrous but realistic tales of script-writing ever. Apparently, Werner Herzog completed the script for Aguirre, the Wrath of God in two-and-a-half days. Yes, you read that right. Much of the script was written during a 320 km bus trip with Herzog’s football team, and so far it’s so good. Right? Furthermore, his teammates got drunk after winning a game and one of them vomited on several pages of Herzog’s manuscript. Herzog immediately threw out the window of course, but the effort was lost. And to this day, Herzog claims he cannot remember all of the things that he wrote on these pages. So understandably they had to make do with what was left of the script. How crazy is that?
But on a positive note, this is the first (out of 5 in total) collaborations between Herzog and equally crazy Klaus Kinski. It’s also a fantastic movie about the insane soldier Don Lope de Aguirre (Kinski was the perfect choice won’t you agree?). He led a group of conquistadors down the Amazon river in order to find the lost city of El Dorado. Even Francis Ford Coppola cited this film as an influence on Apocalypse Now, and today it’s one of the finest movies in Herzog’s career. I highly recommend it.
The New World
Probably one of my favorite Terrence Malick movies. Or at the very least in the top 3 along with Badlands and Days of Heaven. It depicts the tale of Pocahontas and John Smith, but also the founding of the Jamestown, settlement in Virginia.
This is a beautiful movie with great performances and incredibly rich cinematography from 3 times Oscar winner Emmanuel Lubezki. Chivo really outdid himself with the cinematography, and his talent is evident in almost every scene. It’s a beautiful movie. And in fact, Terrence Malick finished the script for the movie in the late 1970s, but it lay dormant well until 2004. But if you don’t decide to watch it because of the great direction and outstanding cinematography, then watch it for the performances. Colin Farrell, Q’orianka Kilcher, Christian Bale and Christopher Plummer are outstanding here. Admittedly, it’s a slow-paced and long movie (much like most of Malick’s movies) but it’s so worth it.
Black Sails
And I’m ending this post with a TV show. Indeed, after 3 movies it’s time to showcase a great TV show that has pretty much everything. Captains, treasure hunts, elaborate ship battles, uncharted unexplored islands, exotic destinations and most of all pirates. And yes, the first season was a slow burner, but things pick up pace in the later seasons. Not to mention, there’s the incredible performances from Toby Stephens.
But the story-line is a compelling mix of the Treasure Island prequel and true-life historical pirates. And the character development of most of those characters (real or fictional) is nicely done as well. Oh and here’s a fun fact. Despite the show’s title “Black Sails”, the namesake does not make an appearance on the show; as none of the pirate ships actually sail with black colored sails. No pirate ships did. The salt from the sea would turn them grey very quickly.
