Paw Patrol

Do you remember how I always mention that I love previously unexplored topics? Paw Patrol is one of them, and I couldn’t be happier about thay. Look, I’ve already written about animated TV series. Plenty of them in fact. Dragonball Z is a perfect example her I might add. And I also wrote a bunch of great Nickelodeon kids shows too. Check out that article out here. But Paw Patrol is a first for me, and I can’t wait to explore the world of Adventure Bay. But one thing at at a time here. First, I must mention the hate for Paw Patrol, and then the love.

Paw Patrol: There’s Love And There’s Hate For It

Look, I’m very familiar with Paw Patrol. Although I don’t have children of my own (yet), I do have plenty of friends that do have kids, and I’ve babysat plenty of my nieces and nephews. On a spare of the moment notice, aunt Suzie is here to help. And through those times Paw Patrol has been my constant companion. Hence, the confusion with some of the articles that I found in my research for this particular post.

Let’s just say that the writers were not kind (at all) to the popular kids’ show, and I’m baffled about it. Indeed, not every episode of Paw Patrol is a masterpiece. But I dare you to find any show that has one masterpiece after another. However, the atrocious and downright negative articles that I found forced me to ask myself afterward… Is it really that bad? Well, no. No, it’s not. But before I could dive into the ethos and the messages behind Paw Patrol… I believe a word or two is needed about the game that inspired this article. What’s Special About This TV Show?

In its bare essence, Paw Patrol is a CGI–animated children’s television series created by Keith Chapman. But the show’s focus is on a boy named Ryder who leads a crew of search and rescue dogs that call themselves the PAW Patrol. So, each dog has a specific set of skills based on emergency services professions. Such as a firefighter, a police officer, and an aviation pilot. And they all live in doghouses that transform into customized vehicles. Or “pupmobiles”, for their missions which is also cool. And last but not least, all of the puppies are also equipped with backpacks called “pup packs”. They contain tools that relate to the pups’ jobs, and yes. They’re stinking cute as well.

And just what’s so special about Paw Patrol? Well, in my humble opinion it’s the message that the TV show is trying to convey to the young audience. I feel it’s the show’s best quality too. And yeah, although it may be lacking in some other areas, it does send a good and positive message to the impressionable audience.

Let’s start with Rayder now. Honestly, I don’t get the hate for Rayder. He’s a good leader and shows some good role-model qualities too. And in a positive way no less. But that’s the message in the entire show. It teaches kids important lessons. The importance of teamwork, helping others and overcoming differences. Or simply doing the right thing. All good and positive things that kids are bound to learn one way or another.

Great Characters Too!

But the thing is Rayder is not the only good character in Paw Patrol. Aside from the adorable puppies (which I’ll get to in a second), I’m a fan of Cap’n Turbot too. He’s a scientist and a marine biologist, and of course the perfect vehicle to get kids interested in science. Plus I adore his thick French accent. But I’m all about the actual Paw Patrol here. Marshall, Rubble, Chase, Rocky, Zuma and Skye are just adorable. And I can see the clear intention to give them real-life jobs to each and every one of them.

PAW Patrol

Firefighter, police-officer, aviation pilot and so on. It’s a good way to get kids interested in these grown-up professions. And who knows, they might get inspired to one day become pilots for instance. I mean not everyone can become a YouTube star… And while the most common grievance/complaint I found about the show (in my research) is the repetitiveness of the actions. Every episode has the same format, and every episode is more or less the same. Well, yes. As it should. The show is very much in line with the children’s psychology. Moreover, kids crave repetition, stability and familiarity. Indeed. It’s also the reason why so many kids are picky eaters. I mean, what do you expect from Paw Patrol. It’s a kids’ show. Every episode of Grey’s Anatomy has been same and the show has been on the air forever.

The Cultural Impact Of Paw Patrol Cannot Be Denied

There’s also no denying that Paw Patrol is educational. But at the same time it’s visually pleasing and smart enough to comprehend that message I talked about. And I think the mix of it all that makes the cultural impact of Paw Patrol even greater. And some media outlets went as far as to criticize the the „tone-deaf“ portrayal of law-enforcement (especially in the US). Especially last year in the wake of the George Floyd protests.

The show was criticized for presenting a “good-cop archetype” after a post on the show’s Twitter account. Which post you might ask? The post in which the show announced that it would go dark in memory of Floyd and received negative backlash because if that. There was even call for Defunding Paw Patrol and downright canceling it. But, that’s the perspective from the grown-ups side of the story. The cultural impact that it has is more on the educational/entertainment side. The kids side if you will, and the side for which the show was created in the first place. They are getting entertained and educated (by a 10 year old boy and a couple of puppies), and that’s all that matters. The grownups can nitpick and downplay the importance of the show, as much as they want.

Movie Adaptation Is On Its Way!

Watch out, kids (and grown-ups). A movie adaptation is on its way. And pretty soon too. August 2021 is the month of the Paw Patrol movie and fans cannot be happier about it. Directed by Cal Brunker, the computer-animated movie has a stellar cast in the voice roles. Dax Shepard, Tyler Perry, Jimmy Kimmel, heck even Kim Kardashian is in it. But I’m all about the adorable Ian Armitage. You know… The actor that plays Young Sheldon. We’ll he’s voicing Chase, the German Shepard police pup and I’m very excited about it. But when it comes to the celebrity fans of the show, the aforementioned celebrities are true fans as well. The Canadian prime-minster Justin Trudeau is also a fan (mostly because of his kids). And so is Justin Timberlake (also because of his kids).
