Moonscars

Moonscars may be a fairly new game for us. However, writing about badass female characters is not a new occurrence for us. We had plenty of great articles about games that had female characters in them. Die Young first comes to mind here, and you can read our game review here as well. Secondly, there’s the Syberia article (check it out here) but if you’d like many more then feel free to check out our blog as well. You’re welcome.

But right here and now, we’re all about Moonscars.

But What Are Some Of The Steam User Comments Saying About Moonscars?

Herbcappa says: I definitely enjoyed this game. just the right mix of difficulty and variety.

While Obzend adds: Good Metroidvania with amazing art direction and animations. The story is interesting as well. I’ve played it on the Steam deck and there were some huge frame drops in certain places but in general, it was a smooth experience. Definitely worth it!

And what does Moonscars have to do with the theme of this article?

Well, Moonscars has a female warrior in the middle of the story. Her name is Grey Irma and she’s a fierce Clayborne warrior. So, we figured that it would be a great idea to find games that also have a female warrior in then. Regardless of the genre and regardless of the time period. For us, it sounded cool to combine several bad-ass female characters and put them in one article. All, right now. These are some of our picks.

Aloy from Horizon Zero Dawn

Aloy has been born into a gorgeous post-apocalyptic world inhabited by really cool machine dinosaurs. And she must conquer this land, and discover who she really is. She also must see her journey to its end, and aid in the trials and tribulations of those she meets. From farmers to kings.

But at the same time, Aloy is the genetic clone of 21st-century roboticist and engineer Dr. Elisabet Sobeck. She is voiced by voice actress Ashly Burch and modeled after actress Hannah Hoekstra. Hey, we did an article about Ashly too. Read it here. But, Aloy is curious, determined, and intent on uncovering the mysteries of her world. And did you know that she was included in the original pitch for Horizon Zero Dawn. Yes, she’s one of the three “pillars” of the game’s foundation.

Sonya Blade From Mortal Kombat

Sonya Blade is a beautiful, stern tough-as-nails general. She also represents a very emancipation and headstrong woman. But for all her stubbornness and pride, she deeply cares about the lives of her friends and comrades. Her abilities are vast, mostly based on agility, as well as deadly and impressive due to her Special Forces training. She is very fast in combat, using quick and effective kicks and strikes.

Like most MK characters, Sonya also fits a character archetype, being the series’ first damsel in distress. But did you know that Sonya’s character was inspired by the karate champion and movie actress, Cynthia Rothrock? Now you do.

Jill Valentine From Resident Evil 3

All eight all right. Yes, we know that players control former elite agent Jill Valentine and mercenary Carlos Oliveira in RE3. But for now, we’re gonna focus on the better half of the duo. The one and only…Jill Valentine.  Her profile in Resident Evil 3 describes her as cheerful yet determined, with a strong sense of justice. She was also identified as one of the all-time greatest mascots of the video game industry. As a tough, strong and attractive female character who could appeal to a broad demographic

Here’s a fun fact. Julia Voth served as the character model for Jill Valentine for the 2002 Resident Evil video game. Her likeness was also used in several other video games in the Resident Evil franchise.

Lara Croft From Tomb Raider

Not A warrior per se, but she does know how to kick some ass. And she’s a single female character in her own video game. So, yeah… I think she belongs on this list. Lara is an English archaeologist, treasure hunter and tomb raider. Born to an aristocratic family, Lara is generally disinterested in upper-class society, finding it stifling and boring. But she’s anything but boring really. Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider series currently have 6 official Guinness World Records. Including “Best Selling Video Game Heroine. Indeed. Lara Croft has been massively popular since her debut in 1996. She is seen by many to be the number-one heroine in gaming history, surpassing the likes of Samus Aran from the Metroid series. Not too bad right?

Oh and here’s a fun fact for you. When she was young, her father called her “little monkey”. Coincidentally, in the survivor timeline, Lara was born in 1992, and her Chinese Zodiac is a monkey.

Kassandra From Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey

Hey, another great warrior character. And another one that I’m very familiar with. Heck, I played with Kassandra and fell in love with her while I was writing in my Filmaholic Rookie Gamer Review of the game. Check it out here. She’s also tough, and strong. Hey, she was a Spartan mercenary from the Peloponnesian War after all. Not to mention, her name in Ancient Greek means “shining upon men”. She almost carries the meaning of her name down to a T. But Kassandra has received near-universal critical acclaim for her characterization as an atypical female video game protagonist. But I’m curious…

Are you a fan of Kassandra? Or did you play the game with her half-brother Alexios? Let us know in the comment section.
