Marauders

Marauders is next on our agenda. And we love games like Marauders here at IndieGala. A brand new game that was just released. And tactical first-person multiplayer shooter that is gonna make plenty of you happy that is out.

Yes. The game is out and about, but this is not our first article that deals with science-fiction movies. Oh no. Deliver Us Mars had us locked, loaded and headed to Mars with plenty of great Mars-related flicks. You can read all about it here. And my colleague (The Italian Guy) had a great article about our previous Paradox Science Fiction Weekend. You can read it here.

But what’s so special about marauders? And which movies go well with it? You can find out more if you just scroll down this article.

Marauders: The 101 On The Game

What’s Marauders All About You Might Ask? Well, developed by Small Impact Games and published by Team17, Marauders is a tactical first-person multiplayer shooter. It’s also set in an alternative 1990s where The Great War never ended. Earth has been industrialized to its breaking point, and many have fled to the stars. As space mercenaries known as ‘Marauders’, players will gear up and pilot their ships through hostile galactic reaches to salvage anything they can and survive by any means necessary. So, throughout each match, players will be able to upgrade their gear on-the-fly as they uncover troves of loot from daring raids on hulking frigates and embark on tense touchdowns on moving asteroids. They’ll also have to keep a close watch for others looking to do the same and end their expedition with a bullet.

Don’t forget! Marauders is available for purchase here at IndieGala.

But what are some of the Steam User Comments Saying About it?

*BMXBike8 says Great alternative to Tarkov.

*While Schindler’s First adds: Best game of 2022. No, actually.

Well… This leads us to the main topic of this article.

Marauders And 5 Cool Science Fiction Flicks That You Might Enjoy

Here’s the reasoning behind this article. Since the Marauders game is set in the alternative 1990s, we figured that it’s best to focus on some awesome science fiction movies from the 90s. Some of them are just from in the 90s while others are also set in the 90s. Yes. The 90s was a great decade for movies, and this is our pick of the best science fiction flicks. Hope you’ll enjoy it.

The Matrix

Yes, I’m starting this list with the Matrix. You know… The 1999 movie. Why Matrix you might ask? Because it’s awesome. And no, I’m not talking about not the meta BS called The Matrix Resurrections that we got last year. The OG 90’s movie that is still awesome to this very day. It still is a revolutionary, innovative and down-right bad-ass piece of cinema history. Not to mention it has one of the best casting decisions ever (hello Keanu Reeves fans). And it’s probably the best thing that Wachowskis will ever come up with. The Matrix is still imitated, replicated and spoofed. And that alone should tell you about the influence it had not only in the genre. But in the decades that followed.

Terminator 2: Judgement Day

Here’s a cool fact. Back when Paul Thomas Anderson (hello fans of PTA) was in film school, his professor announced to him (and to the other students in his class):

–         If you’re here to make movies like T2, then just leave. We make serious movies here.

And to PTA it wasn’t a good start to his education. So, he did leave. And he never looked back.

-What if I wanted to make T2? To me, Terminator 2 is a pretty awesome movie, said PTA in an interview. So, yeah. The moral of this story is… 1. Some directors don’t really need film school to make it. And 2. Judgement Day is a freaking fantastic movie and if you don’t really appreciate it you’re a snob. That along with a term paper he plagiarized and submitted as his own were reasons enough for PTA to leave film school after just several days of enrollment. I mean, the man was right. T2 is still a pretty badass movie, and probably the last one of the series that could hold up to that praise. Especially if you’ve know about the junk we got after this one.

Dark City

A true gem of the ’90s. A movie that not only blends sci-fi with neo-noir. But also a movie that has one of the most elaborate set pieces and set designs ever. Not to mention, some of the finest actors ever. Rufus Sewell, Kiefer Sutherland, Jennifer Connelly, Richard O’Brien, and William Hurt are in it. Not too shabby right? But Sewell is truly amazing here. He’s John Murdoch in Dark City. An amnesiac man that will become a suspect in a mysterious murder. He’s what you call a wronged man on the run from the authorities. But he’s not running from the police. He’s also on the run from a mysterious group – the “Strangers”. An absolute classic from the ’90s and one that it’s a must watch.

Strange Days

The only movie on this list that has a woman director. And not just any woman. The Academy Award winner (and James Cameron’s ex-wife) Kathryn Bigelow. In fact, Cameron is the co-writer of the cyberpunk/thriller and a movie based on his story too. But Strange Days has Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis and Tom Sizemore in the roles. Set in the last two days of 1999, the movie follows a former cop turned street hustler that accidentally uncovers a conspiracy in Los Angeles. But all in all, Strange Days is sleek sci-fi with a grungy touch. It’s also a big, explosive form of entertainment. And although not directed by Cameron, is very much in the vein we’ve come to expect from him. It’s a must-watch for the fans of Kathryn Bigelow.

The Rocketeer

Speaking of underestimated 90’s gems, The Rocketeer is an obligatory mark on this list. The Rocketeer is a Disney movie (can you believe it?) and the second movie on this list that has Jennifer Connelly in the cast. Set in 1938 Los Angeles, The Rocketeer tells the story of stunt pilot Cliff Secord. He discovers a hidden rocket-powered jet pack that he thereafter uses to fly without the need for an aircraft. And with that, quickly becomes the primer target of both Howard Hughes, the FBI and The Nazis. If you haven’t seen it, I urge you to go ahead and see it. It’s gonna be worth it. Trust me.
