JW Evolution 2

Let us just state that JW Evolution 2 is one of our favorite games right now. And wouldn’t you know it? It’s also one of our favorite topics for our blog. Hey. We already devoted articles upon articles about the previous two movies in the new rebooted trilogy. And yes. I even defended the previous entry into the franchise. JW: Fallen Kingdom. You can read all bout it here. Yes, I consider it to this day to be quite a good movie. There, I’ve said it. But I’m here all about Jurassic World Dominion. I’d love to tell you more about it for sure.

JW Evolution 2

But first… Let me tell you more about the game that inspired this article.

JW Evolution 2 is the much-anticipated sequel to Frontier’s ground-breaking 2018 management simulation. JW Evolution. It offers an all-new narrative campaign voiced by cast members from across the Jurassic World film franchise. It also has exciting new features and four engaging game modes. And an expanded roster of awe-inspiring dinosaurs.

But The Game. Is Dominion Any Good?

No, not really. It’s barely watchable. But for the most part, it seems like it’s multiple movies shot separately and then condensed into one very long and at times boring movie. And I can’t really tell you more about the plot, because there is none. Not in a basic sense really. For starters, Owen and Claire (Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard) are living off the grid in the Sierra Nevada mountains. With them is Maisie Lockwood, Sir Benjamin Lockwood’s cloned granddaughter. And it’s not easy to stay off the grid with a teenager.

Especially very wanted teenaged. Yes, you can imagine what happens next, and it will be a globe-trotting mission to get Maisie back. But every else in the world humanity is trying to adapt to life alongside the dinosaurs. They’re roaming the Earth and causing damage, but the truth is… The new genetically modified locusts are doing way more damage. So, the trio from the original movie (Dr. Ellie Sattler, Dr. Ian Malcolm and Dr. Alan Grant) are headed to Biosyn Genetics’s HQ to find out the truth. They’ll get some help along the way, but they’ll also get some resistance.

Heavy On The CGI, Stingy On Everything Else

I must say… This is the first movie of the entire new trilogy that has elaborate and larger use of CGI. Especially when it comes to the dinosaurs. However, it’s all in vain when you don’t get an emotional pay-pack from all that CGI. The end-product feels devoid of character, devoid of soul and yes. Feels like an empty husk compared to the original trilogy. Logic and basic science are out of the picture, and all you’re left with is the mindless moving of CGI and live-action characters. Seriously. Chris Pratt’s character drops in an ice lake and gets out of it as if he took a swim in his backyard pool. Logic be damned!

The writers clearly tried to focus more on the social commentary and less on the character/plot development. And yes, their intentions are obvious to see from the first 15 minutes. You cave a commentary/critique on corporate greed. Furthermore, on capitalistic greed. Not to mention the scientific meddling in the laws of nature, and how it affects our future. You know ethical stuff that we should care more about.

JW Evolution 2

Some New Faces And Some Old

I must say… I was pleasantly surprised by the screen time for the seasoned actors from the original movie. Wanted more, but prior to seeing the movie, I expected way less of their presence. But yeah. Laura Dern, Jeff Goldblum and San Neil are back and they’re great as ever. Seriously, they’re stellar and they’re also the very few bright spots in this movie. DeWanda Wise is also a good addition, as Kayla Watts, the mercenary turned rescue pilot. And yes. With the limited presence on screen, Campbell Scott delivers a good performance.

However, his role lacks any substance to make him a great villain. Pratt and Howard are not center stages here and it shows in their on-screen commitment. They’re also doing their best with what they got. Which is not a lot in terms of the quality of the script. But I gotta say. The role of Maisie is a wasted opportunity for a potentially great character. Much like the rest of the character, she’s given exposition and some obligatory backstory. But not much else. Let alone proper character development. Which is a shame, since her story is fascinating. We learn more about it here in the Dominion movie, but again. Not enough to make an emotional impact.

JW Evolution 2 VS Dominion

To summarize, Dominion is a lackluster movie from a once-great franchise. It lacks imagination, motivation and will to create something great. Not to mention, it overstays its welcome with the 146 minutes of runtime. However, what you’ll be able to find in those 146 minutes is mindless running, chasing and jumping. The uninspiring direction is only matched by the bland and dull script. I feel that this movie deserved so much better. We all did.
