When you play this tactical FPS you have to remember that it is completely different from games like battle royales. Here the choice of the character can fully determine the course of your game.
As I am a player of Rainbow Six Siege, I want to advise you some characters that can help you in both attack and defense phases. For the attack phases, if you want to win, you must use Montagne. This character with French origins has a strong shield that in the attack phase will allow you to pave the way for you and your team. Instead, for the defensive stages, I recommend the German character Jager. This soldier allows to neutralize grenades with his special ability and possesses good ballistic equipment.
In any case, remember that there are many characters available. Plus, Ubisoft updates the roster continuously.
