One great character is all you need

Yes, I mentioned a great deal of really interesting rhino characters in my previous post, but I did mention that I will be looking back to Marvel’s Rhino in much detail as well. I keep my promises, that’s for sure. Yes, writing about some of my personal favorites was fun and all, but let’s focus on one in particular as a Exit Limbo Tribute. One very underrated, yet amazing rhino character.

Exit Limbo: What’s the game all about?

Exit Limbo Tribute

However, before I do that, I think it’s good to take a moment and present the game itself. Inspired by the cult games like Streets of Rage, Street Fighter and Metroid, Exit Limbo is a retro-inspired beat ‘em up video game with cool adventure elements. Set in Modena, Exit Limbo will prove to be a dystopian nightmare for Mr. Rhino. A world with raging zombies, evil sheep and nightmarish creatures will haunt his new reality, and he will have to fight them off with the help of some unlikely allies. Stay tuned for Exit Limbo.

Exit Limbo Tribute: Cementing Rhino’s deserving status

Exit Limbo Tribute

Although at first glance, Mr. Rhino and Marvel’s Rhino don’t really have that much in common. Exit Limbo’s Mr. Rhino is the main charioteer, while Marvel’s Rhino is a supporting one. Exit Limbo’s Mr. Rhino lives in Modena, Italy, while Marvel’s Rhino comes from Russia. The former is a protagonist, while the latter is an antagonist. A villain if you will, and a damn good one. As small of a character as he may be (well compared to other Marvel characters), make no mistake about Rhino. He’s unique and he’s fascinating at the same time.

Furthermore, if you type „best Spider-Man’s villains“ in your Google search, you won’t find Rhino in the top 5 for sure. Maybe not in the top 10. Ultimately you’ll be able to find Dr. Octopus, Shocker, Vulture, Green Goblin and Venom. But somehow, Rhino is pushed to the side, or very dismissed in general. I’m here to dispel all of that. Why? Because I feel that he’s a fantastic villain and deserves a lot more credit. Not to mention there’s an incredible actor in that role, and in a terrible movie. And I’m still not over the treatment that both Rhino and Paul Giamatti got in The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But more on that later.

Who is Rhino?

I feel that most of the time, Rhino is being dismissed as a villain because of his lack of finesse, style and well, influence. He’s not a rich, influential and powerful like Norman Osborn, nor a brilliant scientist like Otto Octavius. Far from that. He’s a rather simpleton. An immigrant from Russia who needed to pay for the transfer of his family to the United States. With basically no skills and very limited education, his life of crime was inevitable. He’s probably one of the few down-to-earth characters in the Marvel Universe, and very relatable because of his hardship and simplicity. He’s every immigrant’s worst fear, to put it bluntly. But I see him as much more than just an opportunist and a victim of the American dream. His dream to bring his family to the states led him to the vicious experiments and the creation of his evil alter-ego.

A classic immigrant story

Rhino managed to make do with what little he had, and I respect that. I really do. And whatever his crimes may be there’s no denying that his motives were somewhat decent. Aleksei Sytsevich (prior becoming Rhino) managed to transition from a thug to a mercenary to a full-blown villain for two fantastic super-heroes. Spider-Man and the Incredible Hulk. Although he’s mostly portrayed as a strong but dumb guy, there’s so much more to him than that. He’s a very complex character and deserves a lot more too.

He deserved much more in The Amazing Spider-Man

Admit it. It was such a shame for how his character was treated in The Amazing Spider-Man. He was introduced, for sure, but in the worst possible moment and the worst possible film. And what a mess that The Amazing Spider-Man was.

Overstuffed and suffocated with a lot of things and especially with villains, Rhino was not given the chance to shine. And for those who criticized Paul Giamatti’s performance, don’t. He’s an incredible actor, and I’m glad that the comedic aspect of the Rhino character was there. Rhino would have been such an amazing villain in the sequel if there ever was one. I don’t think that the studio will revisit this villain in the 2021 Spider-man sequel, but if they did I would love Giamatti to return once more to this role.

Although vastly different, both Mr. Rhino and Marvel’s Rhino are products of their environment. The current events shaped their foreseeable future, and they’re both aware that there’s no turning back. They’ll have to rely on their strength and sheer force, which makes them unique in their own right. You have to respect that.
