Cinematic Cats

All right now. The topic tackling cinematic cats is still a mystery for me I must admit. Even after all of this time at IndieGala. Sure I devoted plenty of time and well… posts about cinematic rhinos. And even cinematic worms. Yeah, check that particular post here if you’re interested. It’s a cool and fun read. But aside from two very cool and fun to make posts about Garfield (including one review)… Cats are not something I’ve explored all that much. I’m sorry to say.

Cinematic Cats: Cool Picks There As Well

But what kind of a post would this be if I didn’t tie this fantastic Purrfect March Sale with its cinematic equivalent. A nice selection of cool cinematic cats is that this post needs. And I have the perfect bunch of them here. However, we’d very much love to know your favorite cinematic cat. Garfield maybe? And Thackery Binx from Hocus Pocus? Or perhaps Oliver from Oliver and Company? How about Tonto from Harry and Tonto? Let us know in the comment section.

But let’s start with the list of great Cinematic Cats. I have a wide variety of movies here. That either have cats in the central plot/characters, or they’re in supporting roles. But yeah. Cats are all over these projects. This is for all the cat lovers out there. This one is for you! And we hope you’ll enjoy ever single one of our picks.

Cat Meow GIF by Cats Movie

Cats!

Why not start with the OG movie about cats? The 2019 musical wasn’t the critical and commercial hit that everyone was hoping to be. Especially when there’s such a stellar bunch of talented people in the cast and crew. But oh well. What’s done is done. But yeah. From the Oscar-winning director Tom Hopper to stars like Francesca Hayward, Rebel Wilson, Jason Derulo and Taylor Swift. The cast is truly golden indeed. Not to mention there are the acclaimed actors/Oscar winners such as like Judi Dench, Ian McKellen, Idris Elba and Jennifer Hudson. But yeah, this is a movie that belongs here despite the polarizing reviews. It’s perfect for the Purrfect March Sale.

Fun fact: Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote new songs exclusively for the film.

Keanu

A movie with Jordan Peele and Keegan-Michael Key cannot be a bad thing. And add a cute cat called Keanu in the mix… And you’ve got yourself one of the funniest movies ever. But Keanu is about… Keanu. An adorable cat. But after he gets abducted, Key and Peele’s character will do anything to get him back. And I do mean anything. Even going into the dangerous world of drugs and gang violence. However, the movie is surreal and hilarious as you might expect from Key and Peele. And it’s a perfect fit here, don’t you think?.

Fun fact: This movie has several hit songs from George Michael, who died the same year as it was released. He died on December 25, 2016.

The Aristocats

The Aristocats is probably one of the oldest movies on this list. But it’s also one of the best on this list. And I just had to include it here. A true Disney classic from 1970. With Eva Gabor and Phil Harris in the lead voice roles. This is a true animated marvel indeed, indeed a must for this list as well. Why? Because much like Cats, this is also a movie that’s filled with cats. Animated cats, but yeah. It’s a movie with plenty of these feline creatures. And we feel you’re going to love this oldie but goodie.

Fun fact: This was Eva Gabor’s first Disney movie.

Cats And Dogs

A movie that’s not solely about cats. But they occupy half of the screen time nonetheless. And yeah. Both of them are as cute as they get. Much like the title suggests, this is a movie about both cats and dogs. And yes, it’s also filled to the brim with a great cast. In regular roles. And in voice roles too. From Jeff Goldblum and Elizabeth Perkins to Tobey Maguire. From Susan Sarandon, Sean Hayes to Alec Baldwin. And the Hollywood legend Charlton Heston too. Lets not forget about him. Cats And Dogs is about the high-tech espionage between these two enemies. But their owners are blissfully unaware of it. And that ignorance is what makes half of the fun.

Fun fact: Tobey Maguire’s performance in this film was inspired by Keanu Reeves in the Matrix.

Puss In Boots

Another fully animated movie. But this time about Puss in Boots. A Spanish anthropomorphic talking cat, who is named for his signature pair of boots. Antonio Banderas has the voice role duty in this movie, but Zach Galifianakis, Salma Hayek and Billy Bob Thornton are great in supporting roles. Puss In Boots got an Oscar nomination for a best-animated feature film but sadly lost to Gore Verbinski’s Rango.

Fun fact: Puss in Boots is the first and only character of the Shrek film franchise to have his own movie.

Kedi

Let’s mix things up. After a few live-action movies. And animated ones… Let’s continue with a documentary film about cats. The many stray cats that live in Istanbul, and yeah. Because of that, Kedi deserves to be on this list too. The movie follows seven stray cats around the city. And it also follows the people that care for them. It’s a good movie for every cat lover out there. And because it’s a good movie, still to this day Kedi holds 98% positive approval on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s a must watch if you’re a true cat lover.

Fun fact: “Kedi” is Turkish for “cat”.

Garfield

Why not bookend this post with probably one of the most famous, grumpy lazy, Lasagna-loving cat out there. The one and only Garfield. Now I’ve written about Garfield too. And I even devoted a film review especially for him. Well the film adaptation of the comic book anyway. You can check it out here. But I’m also recommending Garfield because he deserves to be in good company. In the company of 6 other cat-filled movies. Don’t you think? I thought so too. Besides, the movie has a great cast and decent animation. Not to mention, the presence of Bill Murray in the titular role is legendary. So, Garfield is a must here.

Fun fact: Jim Carrey turned down the role of Jon Arbuckle.
