Chivalry 2

Chivalry 2 is the main inspiration for this article. And the brave medieval knights – the main topic in it of course.

Although an article about medieval knights is a brand new thing for me… I do believe I’ve touched on the entire period in my previous two articles. They were about the Crusader Kings games and I briefly discussed the Medieval period of our history. Of course, I mainly touched on the Crusade wars in both of my articles. It was an in-depth look at the Crusades, accompanied by a nice selection of movies that take place in that period. Old, new it doesn’t matter. You can look back at both of those articles here. And here as well. Enjoy.

Chivalry 2

But right here and now, I’m going to focus on a different aspect of the Medieval period. The Medieval knights. They’ve been immortalized in history and even culture and they’re still fascinating as ever. However before I could go on with this article, I believe that a word or two about the game itself is very much in order. Chivalry 2 is the name of the game and I can’t wait to tell you more about it.

Chivalry 2: What’s It All About You Might Ask?

Glad you asked. Developed by Torn Banner Studios and published by Tripwire Interactive, It’s a cool multiplayer hack and slash action video game that was published in 2021. Just a few months ago, in fact. It’s also a sequel to the 2012 Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, and yes. It’s awesome.

You are thrust into the action of every iconic moment of the era. From clashing swords to storms of flaming arrows. All the way to sprawling castle sieges and more. So, go ahead. Return to the ultimate medieval battlefield, and become the knight you’ve always dreamed of. In the game, players are equipped with various medieval melee weapons.

Such as sledgehammers, long swords and battle-axes. Although they can also use bows and arrows. Furthermore, all gameplay modes pit the Agatha Knights, who wear blue and white. And Mason Order, who wear red and black, against each other. If you’re a fan of the original 2012 game, then you should check out the sequel as well.

Chivalry 2 is available for purchase here at IndieGala. But don’t despair. We also have the original Chivalry: Medieval Warfare on hand here, and Chivalry: Deadliest Warrior too. It’s available for purchase here. But don’t forget about Chivalry: Complete Pack which is also available for purchase here at IndieGala. Just pick the best one for you and enjoy.

Chivalry 2 And Our Selection of Cool Flicks

Yup. There are 6 of those cool flicks on this list, and all of them have Medieval knights in the plot. Indeed, Medieval knights are the main focus of this article, and we thought. Why not devote an entire article to them? However, unlike some of my previous articles, this particular one will contain mostly movies that are rather new and fresh. Which ones made the cut? Scroll down to see for yourself.

Oh and yeah. Prepare for lots of King Arthur movies. Just a friendly heads up.

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword

Full disclosure. I actually liked Guy Ritchie’s crack at the old Arthurian legends. In fact, I liked it somewhere until the middle of the movie. And after that the movie lost me, I’m afraid. But up until then, it was kind of revolutionary. Eclectic in the direction, bold in the musical choices. Dare I say I liked the modern spin on the classics. So, it’s because of that that I have to include it on this list. Not to mention it’s filled to the brim with great actors. Charlie Hunnam, Jude Law, Àstrid Bergès-Frisbey, Djimon Hounsou, Eric Bana just to name a few. And of course… My favorite, Aidan Gillen too.

So, yeah. This is a good pick to start this list, don’t you think?

Fun fact: Originally, Joel Kinnaman was cast as Lancelot and Kit Harington was cast as King Arthur. The movie was delayed because the studio wanted a more well-known cast, with a greatly reduced budget.

The Green Knight

An epic fantasy movie that got a 2021 release. Yes, and much like King Arthur, The Green Knight has an incredible director behind the camera. And great cast in front of it. Directed by David Lowery, the movie is based on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a Medieval romance tale. Dave Patel is in the lead role, that of Gawain. While Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris occupy the rest of the roles. This is a good movie that deserves your attention. It has the David Lowery signature slow pacing, dark atmosphere and complex characters. But it deserves to be on this list as well. Don’t miss it.

Fun fact: Sean Connery appears as The Green Knight in the 1984 movie version of this story titled “Sword of the Valiant”.

A Knight’s Tale

Although a bit older, A Knight’s Tale is not the oldest movie on this list. You’ll have to scroll down this article to find out more. It is, however, very anachronistic and oh so quirky. Much like King Arthur, it has contemporary music in the soundtrack and plenty of modern references too. However, it does have the late Heath Ledger in the lead role – that of William Thatcher. A brave and loyal peasant who dreams of being a knight. Until he poses as one and gets to compete in jousting tournaments across Europe. Paul Bettany is in it too, and so is Alan Tudyk. But when the rest of the world was fangirling after Heath Ledger, I was after the one and only Rufus Sewell. I’ve been a fan of Rufus since Dark City, and yeah. He’s still my childhood crush I must admit.

Fun fact: Paul Bettany’s nude scene was shot on his very first day in front of a crowd of extras.

The King

Medieval epics with great directors are kinda the theme here in this article. The King is no exception because it has a fantastic director at the helm. Great cast too and one hell of a story to tell. David Michôd’s 2019 war epic is next, and yes. Deserves to be on this list. Timothée Chalamet is the Prince of Wales, later King Henry V of England. While Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris, Lily-Rose Depp, Robert Pattinson, and Ben Mendelsohn are in supporting roles. The King puts the main focus on Hal. Furthermore, there’s the rise of Henry V as king after his father dies. And of course the difficult balance of palace politics, the war his father left behind and his private life. Although not the most historically accurate, The King is a good movie nonetheless.

Fun fact: By coincidence, Timothée Chalamet’s real middle name is also Hal: Timothée Hal Chalamet.

Outlaw King

Another historical epic set in Medieval times. And yes, another one with a great cast/director combo too. David Mackenzie is in charge of this biopic about Robert The Bruce. And it has Chris Pine in the very same role. Yeah he’s really good here as well. The film largely takes place during the 3-year historical period from 1304, to 1307’s Battle of Loudoun Hill. A period hen Bruce decides to rebel against the rule of Edward I over Scotland, thus becoming an “outlaw”. Aaron Taylor Johnson is in the role of James Douglas, Lord of Douglas, while Florence Pugh is Elizabeth de Burgh. If you’re looking for a good movie with plenty of medieval battle scenes, then this is the movie for you.

Fun fact: The first nine minutes of the film is one continuous choreographed tracking shot.

First Knight

Yes, this is the oldest movie on this list. It’s from the mid-’90s and it has Sir Sean Connery in the role of King Arthur. But the film follows the rogue Lancelot’s romance with Lady Guinevere of Leonesse, and it’s one of my 90’s guilty pleasures. First and foremost because it has Richard Gere and Julia Ormond in the cast. And secondly because of the apparent absence of magical elements in the plot. However, First Knight is often forgotten because it came out two months after one movie that you might have heard about. Braveheart. So, naturally, First Knight didn’t stand a chance. But it’s good anyway and it deserves another viewing.

Fun fact: Though receiving top billing, Sean Connery does not appear until thirty minutes in.
