So regardless if you have a first-grader at home or you’re just starting university. Congrats and good luck!

So, with that in mind, it’s good to mark the Back to school September with a nice selection of video games and movies. Scroll down to find out more.

Back To School With Amazing Movies

One doesn’t really go well without the other? Well, over here at IndieGala video games and movies go well like peanut butter and jelly. And because of that, we have a fantastic selection of movies as well. All of them either have the school as the main theme, but also all of them have fabulous characters that are in high school. You might say that high school is the second theme here in this article. But there’s no doubt that all of them are pretty amazing and yes. Worth giving them another shot. Who knows? Maybe they’ll get you in a – Back To School mood. They worked like a charm on us.

Let’s begin, shall we?

Clueless

The quintessential 90’s high school comedy, don’t you think? And a movie that started the career of Paul Rudd and Brittany Murphy. But this coming-of-age comedy is not only based on Jane Austen’s Emma and it’s written and directed by the talented Amy Heckerling. You’ll meet her again down in this article when I’ll be mentioning another iconic movie. But yeah. It’s about Cher (Alicia Silverstone). A wealthy, popular teenager from Beverly Hills that loves to play match-maker for everyone around her. Her circle of friends includes the equally wealthy Dionne and the clueless new girl at the school, Tai (Brittany Murphy). This is a fabulous movie that paved the way for the 90’s fashion trends and it’s now embedded into modern-day pop culture.

Fun fact: Alicia Silverstone did not have to audition for her role in this movie.

Mean Girls

Written by Tina Fey, and with Lindsey Lohan in the lead role. Mean Girls is another great comedy that depicts the horrors of modern-day high school. And in the middle of that horror is Cady (Lindsey Lohan). A 16- year old girl that will must navigate the influence of the Plastics (a group of mean girls) and the rest of the people in school. It’s never easy being fish out of the water, but being that in high school is especially tough. Mean Girls is honest, funny and probably one of the best high school movies out there. Not to mention the acting is top-notch, and Fey is not too shabby in supporting role duty. It’s a must-watch.

Fun fact: This movie is the feature film screenwriting debut for Tina Fey.

Rushmore

Hello, Wes Anderson fans! Nice to meet you! Rushmore is only Wes’s second movie but it’s still one of the best. And it has Max Fisher (Jason Schwartzman) in the focus. A student at the private academy in Huston who’s fascinated with elementary school teacher Rosemary Cross (Olivia Williams). However, he’s got a rival in Bill Murray’s character and a weird and vicious love triangle will occur. This is a fantastic film with a fabulous script. It’s not to be missed for sure. If you’re a fan of Wes Anderson’s early work, then Rushmore should be on the list.

Fun fact: When Bill Murray first read the script, he thought it was so fantastic that he said he wanted to do it so badly he would do it for free.

Fast Times at Ridgemont High

Told ya, I’d come back to Amy Heckerling, didn’t I? Well, Fast Times at Ridgemont High is her debut movie. And probably the oldest movie on this list. However, it does have an iconic status too, and that’s mostly because of Sean Penn’s presence. It’s also a movie that Cameron Crowe wrote, based on his high school experiences, and yes. It’s fantastic to this day. Not to mention it’s filled to the brim with fine actors. And it has actors that would later become huge stars. Nicolas Cage, Eric Stoltz, Forest Whitaker, and Anthony Edwards just to name a few. A group of Southern California high school students are enjoying their most important subjects: sex, drugs, and rock n’ roll. And they do make a nice coming-of-age comedy indeed.

Fun fact: This is Nicolas Cage’s first paid role.

The Perks of Being a Wallflower

The Perks of Being a Wallflower is about the trials and tribulations of Charlie (Logan Lerman). A depressed high school teenager who befriends a couple of seniors. Being a clueless kid just trying to figure out how the world works, is tough all to itself. But when you’re dealing with mental illness is even tougher. Lerman is great in this movie and so are Emma Watson and Ezra Miller. However, the movie has a great script/direction as well. And you have Stephen Chbosky to thank for that. He adapted his very own book and turned it into this movie. It’s a must-watch.

Fun fact: Stephen Chbosky is a native of Pittsburgh, where the movie was filmed. When he was young, he watched The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) in the same theater where they filmed the scenes for this movie.
