We really enjoyed the game, and the subsequent article about it. You can check it out here.

What’s So Special About Age Of Wonders?

Well, for starters it’s not a game series that fans can pinpoint to one standout from the entire series. Meaning, there’s not one that is the true favorite, and based on my research, the entire series is beloved in one way or another. However, some truly are embedded in the core memory of the fans. The first 1999 Age Of Wonders was of course on the list in every source I could find.

Age of Wonders: Shadow Magic was of course mentioned a lot on the forums, and on the lists of finest AOW games. One Redditor even called it a hybrid of Civilization and Heroes of Might and Magic. But on the other side, Age of Wonders III didn’t have the impression I was looking for. Many of the fans complained about the boring gameplay, and if you’d like to nitpick then this would be the weakest link in the chain. Although I have to admit, I saw plenty of positive feedback among the critics for this one.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall is the most recent one out there, and yes. It’s got quite a reputation among the fans. Although the map clutter remains the main complaint, the general consensus is that it’s a good game with great depth and focus on tactical combat. As one fan put it…If you enjoy sci-fi and Endless Legend, you will most likely enjoy Planetfall.

What About The Flaws?

Well, there are quite a few in the game series, for sure. Indeed, this is an overall fantastic and exciting game series to start, but it does come with some flaws too. Here are some of the few we’ve encountered. For one, a lot of users are complaining about startup problems in the series. It seems like the game crashes or freezes immediately after launch. Furthermore, some players can’t even launch the game, and reinstalling the game doesn’t solve the problem. And there are the visual bugs. Especially in Planetfall, but hey. Most games deal with these issues too. Nothing to worry about, right?

And The Legacy? Can’t Forget About That

Let’s put it this way. The Hype about Age Of Wonders 4 has been insane. Which only goes to show the legacy that this series has left on an entire generation of fans. As we mentioned earlier, there’s a mixed bag of emotions about the previous games. Yes, they’re all well accepted and adored by the fans, but even the fans will agree that the focus is different in every single one of them.  For instance, if you look at the series as a whole, the focus is all over the place. The first game was all about its campaign and scenarios. Which remains pretty fun and somewhat unique to this day. On the other hand, AoW3 is much more tailored towards more open-ended and is a more balanced PvP skirmish with random maps.

Shadow Magic is somewhere in the middle and that’s the beauty of it. It’s what helped solidify the fanbase in the first place. There’s plenty of every pallet out there, and you can just pick the one that tickles your fancy.

Which leads us to the main question…
