Ace Combat 7

Ace Combat 7 is on IndieGala

Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is the full name, but here we’ll keep it short and simple. So, Ace Combat 7 it is then. Also, in honor of the game’s presence here on IndieGala, we’ll make an interesting list of similar movies to pick.

Ace Combat 7: An adventure in the sky

Ace Combat 7 is all fine and dandy. But in this post, we’ll also mention several movies that also feature combat flight action in the plot. Just like the ones in Ace Combat 7.

That’s right. Look up to the sky, because this is a list with plenty of air combat. Whether its fighter jets or helicopters, all of these movies have air combat and lots of action. It’s up to you to choose the best one for you.

Ace Combat 7

Ace Combat 7: The Video Game

Before we get to the movie, let’s mention the actual video game, which is part of the Best of Bandai Namco Sale.

What’s Ace Combat 7 all about you might ask? In all honesty, it’s about combat flight via a realistic flight jet models. The player can complete a mission by destroying air and surface-based targets. Pretty straightforward.

Likewise, the game features 28 different aircraft, although you can certainly choose some fictional super planes. They’re included too.

Ace Combat 7 takes place in 2019 Strangereal and players control the game’s silent protagonist. A fighter pilot whose call sign is “Trigger”. That’s you. so stay focused!

But enough about the game. Let’s move on to the movies! They’re fun and exciting as well.

Top Gun

Ace Combat 7

Probably the most famous of them all. The air combat movie that everyone recognizes. Regardless of how big of a star Tom Cruise was before Top Gun, it was this move that made him an action star.

Likewise, the film also featured plenty of actors who would later become major Hollywood stars. For example, Anthony Edwards, Meg Ryan, Val Kilmer, and Adrian Pasdar.  But did you know that Top Gun was inspired by a magazine article? Indeed.

The article called “Top Guns” was published in the California Magazine. Just 3 short years before the release of the Top Gun film. (but will someone make a movie about this article?)

You can expect the sequel, Top Gun: Maverick later this year, but for now Top Gun is our first option when it comes to fighter jet movies.

It’s adrenaline-filled and a pretty fantastic movie. Just what you can expect from a Tom Cruise movie, indeed. So, give it another viewing.

Because we all feel the need. The need for speed!

Iron Eagle

Iron Eagle

In all honesty, Iron Eagle may not be the best movie on this list, but it does have its moments of greatness. Some might call it Top Gun’s „least attractive cousin“, but it did come out in the same year as Top Gun. And it’s severely underrated.

In contrast to Top Gun though, Iron Eagle was not received very well. Despite having a similar premise to Top Gun, and drawing inspiration from real-life events. The fictional story in Iron Eagle relates to real-life events of the ’80s. Most notably the 1981 Gulf of Sidra incident between Lybia and the USA. That’s right.

The Academy Award-winning actor Louis Gossett Jr. is in one of the lead roles while in a supporting one is Shawnee Smith. The actress who would later star in the Saw franchise.

Check it out if you have the chance.

Firefox

Firefox

While it’s not the most well known Clint Eastwood movie, it’s one of his most peculiar ones for sure. Firefox.

Firefox is produced, directed by Eastwood. And he also stars in the leading role. That of Major Mitchell Gant. At the very beginning, Eastwood’s character is sent into the Soviet Union.

He needs to steal a prototype jet fighter called “Firefox” and amid the Cold War, it is a very valuable possession for the USA indeed.

Also, Eastwood speaks Russian in this movie, so marvel at that. In all honesty, Firefox wasn’t met with positive reviews, but it was a huge box office success.

However, one of the few critics that loved it was the one and only Roger Ebert. He called it manly and entertaining. But to this day, it remains a unique point in Eastwood’s career. You probably won’t find anything similar to this in his resume. It’s worth watching it.

Memphis Belle

Memphis Belle

It’s truly a shame that not that many people know about this movie. Additionally, Memphis Belle is a war drama based on….

Memphis Belle.

The Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bomber called the Memphis Belle. It’s about his last mission during the WW2, and about the men that flew with it.

If you take a close look at the cast you’ll see great acting names like Matthew Modine, D.B. Sweeney, Billy Zane, Eric Stoltz, Tate Donovan, Sean Astin, David Strathairn, John Lithgow. Stellar cast indeed.

But although it was met with mixed reviews, the film was a moderate financial success. Also, it was particularly hailed by some of the best critics of the time. Indeed, it’s a fine movie to watch; during these quarantine imposed harsh times.

The Flight of the Phoenix

Flight of the Phoenix

The Flight of the Phoenix is probably the oldest movie on this list. But, that doesn’t mean that it’s not good. It’s just old. However, The Flight of the Phoenix is a true classic at the same time.

Filled with incredible actors, The Flight of the Phoenix doesn’t contain that much of air combat scenes per se. Well not compared to some other aircraft movies. It’s more of a survival story in the Sahara desert, after an aircraft’s emergency landing.

And can you pay attention to the incredible list of actors that’s in this movie? Let by the incredible James Steward, The Flight of the Phoenix also has Richard Attenborough, George Kennedy, Ernest Borgnine and Peter Finch in the cast.

That’s 5 Oscar-winning actors all in one place. Not bad right?

So, watch the 1965 version of The Flight of the Phoenix if you have the chance. You’ll thank me later.
