Crypto Sale Post

Are you ready for another Crypto Sale Post? We sure are here at IndieGala. And of course for another project that has cryptocurrency in it. Dope is next on our agenda, and we couldn’t be happier about it.

Why? Well, because Dope checks out all of the boxes for our Crypto Sale. But at the same time, it’s a fantastic (albeit older) indie movie that deserves all the attention. But let’s start from the start.

A Very Special Crypto Sale Post

Indeed it is. Why you might ask? Because the Spring Crypto Sale is a very special event here at IndieGala. Furthermore, the Crypto Sale is very much like any other sale we have. However, unlike regular sales, this is a sale where you can purchase your favorite games with your favorite Cryptocurrency at an additional discount. First Bitcoin, then Ethereum, Litecoin, etc. They’re all available and all you have to do is pick your favorites. We figured since our February Crypto sale was so successful, why not do a follow-up? And another fun Crypto Sale Post as well.

But Why Dope As A Crypto Sale Post?

Well, there are several reasons for picking Dope. First and foremost the movie does contain cryptocurrency in the main plot (I’ll get to that in a second). But most importantly… Back in 2015, Dope was the first movie in history that allowed you to purchase cinema tickets with Bitcoin. Indeed. As you may recall, Movietickets.com and Dope’s partnership allowed moviegoers to purchase the tickets for Dope with cryptocurrency. Bitcoin in this case, and was the first such case of monetary transaction. Ever.

“MovieTickets.com thrives on these types of opportunities. It’s cool, it’s original and we’re going above and beyond the common boundaries to drive ticket sales.” said the Movietickets.com Joel Cohen back then.

Cryptocurrency and NFT

A non-fungible token (NFT) is a unit of data on a digital ledger called a blockchain, where each NFT can represent a unique digital item. And thus they are not interchangeable.

In economics, a fungible asset is something with units that can be readily interchanged – like money. With money, you can swap a £10 note for two £5 notes and it will have the same value. However, if something is non-fungible, this is impossible – it means it has unique properties so it cannot be interchanged with something else.

NFTs can represent digital files such as art, audio, video, and other forms of creative work. And yes. They are the latest cryptocurrency phenomenon to go mainstream. But at a very high level, most NFTs are part of the Ethereum blockchain. But it’s a blockchain that also supports these NFTs. Which stores extra information that makes them work differently from, say, an ETH coin. It is worth noting that other blockchains can implement their own versions of NFTs. Not to mention, with NFTs, artwork can be “tokenized”. To create a digital certificate of ownership that can be bought and sold.

Or in simpler terms… NFTs are designed to give you something that can’t be copied. Ownership of the work. Although the artist can still retain the copyright and reproduction rights. Just like with physical artwork. To put it in terms of physical art collecting: anyone can buy a Monet print. But only one person can own the original.

But Why Dope You Might Ask?

Well, as I mentioned, it was the first movie that allowed ticket purchasing with Cryptocurrency. But at the same time, Cryptocurrency is an integral part of the plot. How so you might ask?

Well, because Dope is a movie about Malcolm Adekanbi (Shameik Moore). Oh, and his best friends, Jib (Tony Revolori) and Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) are geeks living in Inglewood, California. They’re also obsessed with 90’s hip hop culture, and it took me a while to notice that the movie is not set in the ’90s. For real. I suppose I should give a massive round of applause to the set production design. And the fantastic retro-inspired costume design/make-up too. But this straight-A trio will get into a real pickle once they attend a drug-dealer’s party. They’ll end up with large quantities of drugs, and they need to unload all of it fast. So, selling it on the dark web (and with cryptocurrency) is their safest bet. So this trio of friends needs to act. Fast. In order to avoid the authorities and pretty much everyone around them.

A Contrast In Tone, Atmosphere, And Messages

Dope is a great movie. But at the same time while I found myself enjoying the complex contrast in different areas of the movie. The grim plot mixed with the lighter tone of the atmosphere. The tough surroundings of the neighborhood and the light, bright and optimistic cinematography. The dark nature of the plot with and the light, witty upbeat nature of the dialogue. And there’s a contradiction in the main character as well. Malcolm is a young man focused on getting into Harvard. And making a better future for himself through hard work and legit means. However, his actions near the end of the movie will differ much from his intentions. But it also gives him (and us I suppose) a real lesson about real life. Especially when the time when life gets so unfair, that you have to become the thing you hate the most.

Great Performances And Great Script

Indeed. I can’t really fault the performances from the trio of actors. Tony Revolori and Kiersey Clemons are great in Dope. So is Zoë Kravitz in the supporting role. But honestly, Shameik Moore is a true standout here. He really carries the movie on his shoulders, and perfectly maintains the balance between the book and street smart. He’s beginning to learn how the real world works, and a couple of days are a perfect learning experience.

But yeah. The script is witty, insightful and honest about the world we’re living in. And how the surroundings (the people around us) can shape our future. More than ourselves honestly, and if you are not smart about it you’re going to fall behind.
