We sure are ready for an Uno Movie here at IndieGala. Which is why we’re dedicating this post, not just to the classic card game. But to the upcoming movie adaptation as well. As I usually make a note in my posts, there aren’t that many topics that I haven’t coved before. Indeed. There are some usual games and topics that are in my usual rotation. Games from the Resident Evil franchise are some of my most frequent topics I must say. You don’t believe me? Just take a look at some of them here. But Uno on the other hand… Not so much.
From Yu-Gi-Oh To The Uno Movie In A Matter Of Months
But while I’m on the subject, the Yu-Gi-Oh post from March of this year is probably my only previous post about a card game. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy writing it. However, Uno is next for me, and yeah. I’m looking forward to the upcoming adaptation as well. I have to admit. But first…
What’s So Special About Uno?
Well, Uno, the OG card game is specifically a shedding-type card game that is played with a specially printed deck. And it is similar to the traditional European game Mau-Mau. However, the game was originally developed in 1971 by Merle Robbins in Reading, Ohio. And it’s been a Mattel brand since 1992. But the video game that we have in our IndieGala vault is developed and published by Ubisoft.
First and foremost, you can match the cards either by matching color or value. And you can play action cards to change things up. So, race against others to empty your hand before everyone else in either Classic play. Or simply customize your experience with a variety of House Rules! Oh, and match settings to ensure you and your friends never play the same game twice!

And What About The Uno Movie?
Before I start with the post about the Uno Movie, I believe a little backstory is very much needed. A little Uno history if you will. Look, this isn’t the first attempt to bring Uno out of the card game. Back in 2013, there was an attempt to make an Uno TV show. And Mattel even came close to that. Along with a production company, Mattel created an hour-long TV show in which the contestants could earn up to 1 million dollars. All just by playing Uno. Similar to Magic: The Gathering but in a TV show format. And with Uno in the mix as well. Well, things didn’t work out, and the plan fell through. Cut to 2021 and another very different Uno project. And a different producer in the team.
Mattel + Lil Yachty = Uno Movie?
Well, it’s true. Mattel is teaming up with the rapper Lil Yachty in order to create the long anticipated Uno Movie. Indeed, the Uno adaptation has just been announced, and it’s…. Interesting to say the least. First and foremost it’s a live-action heist comedy. That’s right. Secondly will be an action/heist comedy movie set in modern-day Atlanta, which the rapper and Mattel as producer. Apparently, the rapper is a huge fan of the card game and not only star in it, but produce it as well. Marcy Kelly is in charge of the script of the adaptation. And although there’s no word on the director, we do know that Kevin McKeon is the supervising producer of this movie adaptation.
“I’m so excited to be part of this film with Mattel,” adds Yachty in his release to the fans. “I played UNO as a kid and still do today. So to spin that into a movie based on the Atlanta hip hop scene I came out of is really special. It hits close to home for me.” adds the rapper in a statement about the project.
The Latest Game Adaptation From Hollywood
However, Uno is only the last in the long line of adaptations that Mattel Films is working on. American Girl, Barbie, Barney, Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason are some of the others. While Masters of the Universe, Thomas & Friends, View-Master, and Wishbone are also included on the list. Yes, watch out for all of them in the near future.
But going back to the Uno live-action movie, there’s very little info to add at this point. Aside from the rapper, there’s no other actor attached in the cast. Or there’s hardly any additional information’s about the rest of the crew, the release date, or even start of the production.
However, a previous 2016 Uno movie does exists. Written by and starring Geoff Ramsey, this is a 164 minutes long feature length movie. It’s in fact a direct sequel to the independent short film “Let’s Play – Uno.” Although the setup and atmosphere are similar, Uno: The Movie expands on many of its predecessors’ ideas. In both scope and scale. Not to mention, that despite the long run-time, the movie is actually in entirely one take. Thanks to a multi-camera setup no less. And the whole film was uploaded on Youtube and the Rooster Teeth website by the creators. So yes, you can watch it, for free on either side. Check it out if you’re curious.
