Warhammer Series

Hi there. Have you heard the good news? The Warhammer 40k series is going to the small screen, and the fans of the Warhammer 40k universe cannot be happier. We are one of those, to be honest. And we already had plenty of articles devoted to the Warhammer games too.

We already mentioned the celebrity fans of the Warhammer 40K universe here. And we did a review of the Warhammer movie. Which you can read here. However, in that article about the celebrities that adore Warhammer 40K (among others), you’ll find Henry Cavill.

Yes. The actor best known for his role in Superman is about to star and executive produce a Warhammer 40K TV series for Amazon. But more on that later in this article. Before we dive into Henry’s new project, let’s take a closer look at one of the games that inspired it.

And What About The Warhammer Series? What’s So Special About It?

We’re gonna get into the details, the fun behind the scenes/production facts and what can you expect from it. Well, first you have to understand the state that Henry’s career is in when he agreed to star and executive produce this TV series. He got out from the production of The Witcher and to be replaced with the much younger Liam Hemsworth. His Superman contract got a suprise termination by the new DC boss, James Gunn. And although he does have some interesting projects (films and otherwise) in his near future (the Highlander reboot speaks to me)… Henry is committed to bringing another nerd franchise to the small screen. Just like he did with The Witcher.

Other Cool Facts About The Warhammer Series

As we mentioned earlier… Cavill will star in and executive produces the franchise for Amazon Prime Video. Which acquired the global rights to the IP from Games Workshop. The agreement includes the “Warhammer 40,000” rights across film, TV and more. Making it the first major acquisition of its kind for Amazon Studios.

But here’s the kicker. Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Natalie Viscuso worked with Cavill to obtain the “Warhammer 40,000” IP before taking it to Amazon Studios. He’s not an executive producer for nothing I suppose.

“I have loved ‘Warhammer’ since I was a boy, making this moment truly special for me. The opportunity to shepherd this cinematic universe from its inception is quite the honor and the responsibility,” Cavill said in a statement.

And it’s true. Henry has been a fan of the Warhammer series for quite some time. There are videos upon videos of him painstakingly hand-painting miniature figures of the Space Marines. If that’s not love and devotion, then I don’t know what is.

Warhammer Series VS Warhammer Universe

Warhammer 40,000 is set in the far future, where humanity is long removed from what might be its brightest future only for it to be plunged in what might be its darkest age. The threats to humankind’s empire are countless — traitors driven by the fires of ambition, alien empires seeking to reclaim the stars, and the nightmarish servants of the malevolent gods beyond reality. But is it a good project? One can only hope. With the money that Amazon has to back up a Warhammer 40k TV series, the potential is endless.

However, there’s a big scare among the fans that the series should get disrespected and could potentially end up in the gutter. Plus, the universe is so big, it’s scary to imagine how someone would tackle it, let alone turn it into a TV series. Let’s face it, dystopian military space operas aren’t quite for everyone. This isn’t anything like Star Wars or even Dune. This is heavy stuff. And very few things are more disappointing than seeing this super niche series of games turned into a bland, gutless version of itself.

Henry Cavill: The Franchise’s Biggest Asset?

Frankly, he is. Even though we still don’t know much about the cast, crew and other details, having Henry’s name on the project could attract even an audience that hasn’t even heard of Warhammer. Cavill is not just an actor that’s filled the boots of a big franchise or two, the man consistently takes on roles in series that he admires. This is a passion project for him and it’s more than likely that he won’t let it become a bland, gutless TV series.

And What can the audience expect? Game creator Rick Priestley has cited a laundry list of fantastic influences on his creation. The writings of H.P. Lovecraft, Lord of the Rings and Dune are some of the influences, so you can expect those influences in the TV series too. If the producers and showrunners are staying true to the source material.
