Monster Prom

Hey there! Have you visited our Those Awesome Guys Halloween Sale? The Monster Prom franchise is included of course, but let me tell you more.

Granted, we’ve never had prom-inspired articles before. We’ve had Mother’s Day-inspired articles. Lovely as ever. And even doggies-inspired articles as well. Check them out here. But the prom as a formative event for every teenager has somehow alluded us. But that’s about to change. Why? Those Awesome Guys Halloween Sale has a cool sale with even cooler video games in it. Which ultimately inspired us to dive into the cinematic prom nights of Hollywood. But first things first. I believe a word or two about the game is in order.

Monster Prom Is Cool… But So Is Our Those Awesome Guys Halloween Sale

Developed and published by Those Awesome Guys, Monster Prom is a true indie gem. Get It Here. It’s also a dating simulation game in which the players assume the role of a student at Spooky High. A high school populated by monsters, as they attempt to find a date to prom. Furthermore, you can choose between six different monsters that you can try to date. Also, you can play as any gender and pronouns with the game allowing for straight, gay, and lesbian dating options.

Monster Prom: An Indie Gem With A Twist

There are only 3 weeks left before prom and you haven’t got a date yet.. And you’re a monster. But that’s okay ‘cause at your high-school everyone else is too! These are the stepping stones into the world of Monster Prom. A one-to-four player competitive dating sim that has you thinking: I never knew I was into that!

Not to mention, the game was nominated for the “Matthew Crump Cultural Innovation Award“. And for “Most Fulfilling community-funded Game” at the SXSW Gaming Awards.

The titles in the sale have up to 70% off of the original price, and this is an incredible opportunity for you to support the small indie developers. Don’t miss it.

Monster Prom Is Way Better When It’s Coming From The Silver Screen

Yup. To honor the theme of the games… Prom and all its ditsy, sparkly glory… We figured we dive you a nice selection of flicks that contain prom in them. Regardless, if the prom is the final event of the movie or the main event for that matter. No, prom must be included in the flicks and that’s that. However, to spice things up, and to go perfectly with Halloween we made a 50-50 decision there. We’ll present 4 regular (non-scary) prom movies and 4 very scary Halloween-appropriate movies. Which ones made the cut? Scroll down to find out.

Footloose

Forget about the 2011 remake. No, the 80’s classic is what’s matter here. The movie that made Kevin Bacon a true A-list star, and the movie he still hates to this day. But the real crescendo is at the movie’s end. There’s a big dance-off at the school prom and it’s amazing. However, the movie’s inspiration stems from a real-life ban on dancing. Indeed. Footloose is loosely based on the town of Elmore City, Oklahoma. Yes. The town had banned dancing since its founding in 1898 in an attempt to decrease the amount of heavy drinking. But thanks to this weird ban we have one of the most entertaining movies of all time. That just happens to end with one of the most fun dance segments. A prom dance segment.

Fun fact: Chris Penn could not dance, so they had to teach him in terms of what he already knew: wrestling.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer

I’m talking about the 1992 movie. Not the subsequent TV show, although it’s great as well. But yeah. Buffy the Vampire Slayer checks all the boxes. It’s a horror black comedy with plenty of vampires. And it has prom scenes/senior dance as well. Not to mention it has Luke Perry looking gorgeous as ever. Yeah. He was in the early days of his Beverly Hills 902010 fame and this movie was just the ticket for him. But if you’re going to watch it for the presence of Luke Perry or Kristy Swanson… Then the presence of the late Rutger Hauer, Donald Sutherland and Paul Reubens should do the trick.

Fun fact: Ben Affleck played an opposing team’s basketball player who gives the ball away to a vampire player.

American Pie

The quintessential teenage comedy from the late ’90s. And a movie that opened the Hollywood doors for so many young actors in Tinseltown. Most notably for Jason Biggs, Sean William Scott, Shannon Elizabeth, Mena Suvari. But yeah. American Pie is a coming-of-age story about a bunch of high school seniors. And their quest to lose their virginity before their high school graduation. It’s hilarious and shocking now as it was back in 1999. But it’s worth the watch.

Fun fact; Seann William Scott was paid $8,000 for this role as Steve Stifler. His first role in a feature-length film.

Carrie

Another horror classic. But this time from the mid-’70s. And it’s one of the few horror movies in the history of the Academy that got Oscar nominations. Yeah, horrors are not the darlings of the Academy, but the Stephen King’s adaptation got 2. And in the center of the story is the titular character. Carrie (played by Sissy Spacek). A teenage girl who is sheltered by her domineering, religious mother. She unleashes her telekinetic powers at her senior prom and what follows is a cinema horror gold.

Fun fact: The prom scene took over two weeks to shoot and required a total of 35 takes.

Napoleon Dynamite

Napoleon Dynamite belongs on this list. It has an awkward teenager in the middle of the story, living a very boring, pedestrian life. And over here, the small stuff really makes the movie great. But this quirky movie managed to gain a cult following because of the weirdness. Jon Heder stars in the titular role (that of Napoleon Dynamite), while Jon Gries, Aaron Ruell and Tina Majorino offer support in the rest of the roles. It’s a cult movie with some of the weirdest prom night/high school dance scenes… But it deserves to be on this list too.

Fun fact: Both Jon Heder (Napoleon) and Efren Ramirez (Pedro), who play the lead characters in the movie, have identical twins in real life.

Prom Night

It wouldn’t be a Halloween-themed article without mentioning the Scream Queen. Indeed. The one and only Jamie Lee Curtis. And while you’re just gonna have to come back to read our review of Halloween Kills (in a separate article)… This one is for the fans of Miss Curtis. Especially for the fans of her early career in horror. But the movie follows a group of high school seniors who are targeted at their prom. And by none other than by a masked killer seeking vengeance for the accidental death of a young girl six years earlier. It’s a scary and fun slasher, and worth your time this Halloween weekend.

Fun fact: Gene Siskel called this a watered-down version of Halloween crossed with Carrie.

10 Things I Hate About You

10 Things I Hate About You is another gem from the late ’90s. With a Shakespearean flavor peppered all around the movie, 10 Things I Hate About You is about two very different sisters. One very vapid and popular. While the other is shrewish and unpopular. So, it takes a special person to tame the shrewish one, but over here that task is given to the late Heath Ledger. It’s a fantastic movie that is still beloved to this day. And if you haven’t seen it by now, here’s the perfect opportunity to do so.

Fun fact: This was Heath Ledger’s first American movie.

Killer Prom

Last movie on this list, but certainly not the least. Oh and just because it’s a lifetime movie doesn’t mean it’s all that bad. In fact, this is the most recent movie on this list. And yeah. It has a bonkers premise, but that’s what we all need from a horror Lifetime movie. But Killer Prom is exactly about that. A psychopathic intruder’s dream is to finally have a prom that she never had.

Fun fact: Yvonne Zima also played psychotic villainess Gillian Casey in 2014’s The Girl He Met Online, as well as the evil Juliana Hansen in 2016’s Killing Mommy.
