Well, you’re in luck. Some great movies go well with the theme of this article. And the one thing that’s in common with all of our movie suggestions is… Steampunk. Yes, that’s the recurring theme in our suggestions, but they’re all fun and worth checking out. Which ones made the cut? Scroll down to find out.
The City of Lost Children
A wonderful yet disturbing movie don’t you think? It involves the kidnapping of children and stealing their dreams in a dystopian society. But at the same time, it’s one of Ron Perlman’s finest movies to date. The symbolism and wonderful visual storytelling a just mesmerizing. Despite the dark premise and a disturbing, confusing plot that is. But at the same time, it’s one of the finest examples of steampunk aesthetics in cinema. Seriously, this is one hell of a movie. And yes. It fits perfectly here. It’s a movie that’s so unique that I dare you to find something similar to this. It’s highly recommended of course.
Fun fact: During filming, Ron Perlman was bitten by the dog with the pulley and Judith Vittet was bitten by the mouse with the magnet.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire
Atlantis: The Lost Empire is one of Disney’s forgotten gems. It’s one of my favorites but I feel it was misunderstood for so long. And yes. 20 years later the audience is starting to warm up to a movie that almost no one saw back in the day. But this little gem is about Milo Thatch. A young linguist who gains possession of a sacred book. He believes will guide him and a crew of mercenaries to the lost city of Atlantis… The journey is not an easy one, but his crew will make it memorable for sure. The CGI is great, and the voice acting is even better. Not to mention, Joss Whedon is credited as one of the writers of the story. But yeah. It’s worth mentioning here.
Fun fact: One of the last Disney films to feature a character that smokes.
Steamboy
Another animated steampunk movie, but this time Japanese. Steamboy is one of the most expensive Japanese movies and for good reason. It took the team behind it 10 years to actually make it. Not to mention you have Katsuhiro Otomo to thank for this movie. And if you’re fans of his previous work- Akira… Then you’ll love Steamboy too. It takes place in an alternate reality UK and it has Rei in the middle of the story. A young inventor that will get caught in deadly conflict. The movie is bursting to the seams in steampunk and I highly recommend it. This is one fantastic movie to watch. It’s got great voice actors and fantastic animation. Don’t miss it.
Fun fact: Sir Patrick Stewart and Anna Paquin appeared in the X-Men film franchise.
Wild Wild West
OK, I’ll admit. Wild Wild West is not the best movie on this list, but it checks the most important box. There’s steampunk goodness all over it And it’s got great actors, a fine talented director too. But it somehow misses the mark of what a great steampunk movie should be. It’s a mess quite frankly, but I must include it. It’s a somewhat fun western that rides on the fact that it has Will Smith in the lead role. But Will Smith and Kevin Kline play a pair of secret service agents. They must protect the US president Ulysses S. Grant from a steampunk-savvy, Confederate scientist. And it’s not gonna be an easy task. It’s worth giving it a shot.
Fun fact: Will Smith turned down the lead role in The Matrix (1999) to star in this movie, being a fan of the television series. He later said this was the worst decision he made in his career.
